Games Cancelled

You'd think coaches would know this and/or athletic directors.

Maybe we'll schedule a random non-conf game down the road but there aren't going to be too many opportunities to do that when you play Mon/Tues/Wed and then usually Saturdays.
I think December would be the only realistic option, there are no openings in the schedule due to the Missouri game unless you want to play 3 games in a week.

Team is going to leave tonight to get home and likely will return Monday. We'll want to give next Friday off so that means we'll have to find an open team between now and the 29th. Not impossible and I'm sure Jamie has made some calls.
First name that comes to mind is Chicago State, who's freshley moved to independent status. They have a few games next week but making that move tells me its probably just them trying for as many buy games as possible

I'll disagree with this at least TJ's team was trying hard on defense last yrs team was was just offensively challenged many times last yr. Prohm's team in those games never played as a team at all and certainly didn't give sustained defensive effort. The only game I've been really disappointed in so far in TJ's tenure is this yrs Iowa game didn't think we would get rolled like that, but the women did the exact same thing still a little confused why both teams did so poorly in I.C. this yr. Wouldn't be afraid to play them again but disappointed in what went down.
I'll hold my stance. A loss to say Jackson State or Alabama State in 2021 would have been right up there with Prohm's ugly losses. Just because the team plays harder doesn't make those losses 'not as bad' as Prohms. They would not have been as disappointing, you are right in that, because Prohm neutered the program and the fans, and none of us expected to win 12 games last year, let alone the 20+ and Sweet 16 appearance we ended up getting. Those losses would have been disappointing, as losses to low major kenpom 300+ programs, but not at all in the same context as what Prohm's were.

Agree with you on all fronts at the disappointing Cy-Hawk games this year in I.C.

This is the nice thing when people actually read through the posts we can see other peoples points but still not always agree. Here is to a W on Dec 31st!

As horrible as those two games were last year overall, no one remembers them really because we won both. For context, we beat Xavier and Memphis a week after Alabama State. And Jackson State's performance came right after an ass kicking vs. Iowa.

Showing the probability of making the tournament based on win totals doesn't prove anything. Yes, win totals matter, but that's because they correlate with all of the other things that make up a good resume. You have to win basketball games to get good wins and you have to win basketball games to avoid bad losses. That doesn't mean the committee will look at ISUs resume come selection time and say, "Well, if they'd just had that 18th Quad 4 win against Omaha that got cancelled they'd be in, but as it stands now they are out. Got to have 18 wins."

I think you're probably overestimating the depth of knowledge the committee has on each team.

I don't think they're going to know or, even if told at one point, much remember Iowa State cancelled a Q4 game due to winter weather and therefore the Cyclones should get "mental credit" for an extra win.

No. They're going to see 16 or 17 wins that could have been 17 or 18.

And they're going to say "hard to put a P6 team in with so few wins." It might not screw them (and I hope they win enough games in the Big 12 to be solidly above the bubble) but it might be enough to lose them a "tiebreaker" with the committee that drops them a seed or leaves them out in the cold.

The computer models put ISU right on the edge right now. Torvik has them has them as one of the last four byes (ahead of only NC State and K-State) and KenPom has them in Dayton. When things are going to be sliced so razor thin at that level, then you need every advantage you can find, like an extra win.

I wouldn't care if Iowa State were projected as a #3 seed. But they're not. They're right on the bubble.

Everything was so new for Alabama State, it just felt nice to be winning games again, no matter who the opponent was or what the margin was. And Jackson State, I agree, huge trap game.

13-day gap between non-con and conference play... This is incompetence by our administrators, completely unacceptable.

Concerns for injury, lack of rhythm having 2 weeks off from games, and adding another win to your tournament resume come to mind first and foremost.

If we miss the tournament by having only 17 wins instead of 18. This will be the reason.

Well we have injuries right now so maybe one could say the time off will actually help those key guys be ready for Baylor. Can look at this break in a positive light also....

Those of you saying this is lame, and that the visiting teams could have made it back to their respective cities missed part of the announcement. From the email I just received:

“After consulting with both Omaha and Drake, we believe that cancelling both games today will afford the student-athletes from all four teams the opportunity to depart ahead of the storm and return safely to their homes to spend the holidays with their families,” Iowa State Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard said."

How about we quit complaining and let the teams go home for Christmas?

1000% this. People wanting to watch a Quad 4 buy-game that will be a blowout compared to letting players travel and spend time with their families for Christmas are insane.

This is an overreaction.

I've heard Pollard talk about his experience on the committee and it seemed to me like they have a lot of discussion about details for individual teams like injuries and whatnot, so yes I do think game cancellations is something they would consider, especially if you are going to say that total number of wins is something they use as criteria.

As for ISU being on the bubble, they certainly aren't that right now. It may end up that way when the season plays out. If they get bumped out by a team that has almost the exact same resume but they have one more Quad 4 win than ISU so be it. It's not something I'm going to lose sleep over.

Lol. Calm down bud. There's always long breaks around the holidays, and now that the Big 12 starts right at the 1st of the year, there's gonna be breaks.
I guess the incompetent AD couldn't forsee this winter storm last summer when scheduling was done.

The team is going to be back in Ames Monday with most likely a shoot around. They're then going to be practicing and scouting from Tuesday to Friday before playing Baylor. We're talking about one day here since the game would've been tomorrow.

For reference, we played our final game before break last year on December 21 and played Baylor the 1st. So it's the same amount of days as last year.

Plus, who knows what could happen? Iowa State could lose the game or someone could suffer a significant injury

Yep. Totally on JP to not control the weather and prevent a serious cold front from paralyzing half the country in the next couple of days.

But seriously, while everyone has their right to an opinion and to share that opinion, my own opinion is that this is a really stupid post by you and you should feel bad for sharing it.

The last two games we've won by a combined score of 150-97 but there were some stretches where we looked pretty sloppy and just not focused. I think a lot of that has to do with the quality of opponent as well as it being the end of the semester with finals and stuff. It's easy to get up by 20 and then coast.

This game would've been no different. It was either going to be an absolute route or we sleep walk a bit. Having a dumb injury could've also happened as well.
