Friday OT - Names

Well I like my name, although there were a lot of Jacobs in my class growing up and it gets confusing over the radio at work with three of us out of a team of 25ish most nights.

It kind of annoys me that all three of my older brothers and their wives have been so secretive over their firstborn names. They think their friends of that age are going to steal their names. (Granted my cousin also named her son Oliver a year after my nephew was born.)

It's a ways down the road for me, but when I get there I will name my kids older, less common names. I don't really mind if they are dated. I have had a fantastic time going through our genealogy with my grandpa recently and definitely think I'll use some family names. My grandpa had an Aunt Blanche, I have never heard the name before but there is a very cool story behind her (kind of sad too). Although, my girlfriend will probably need some convincing on that one. She likes all the others I have mentioned though.

So you obviously aren't a fan of The Golden Girls.

I know how to say/spell your last name. You were just lucky you had a shorter first name. I had a lot of letters to remember in kindergarten.
That's why you're so smart now. Yeah, you had the "cool" name, even if you could never find anything personalized. I guess we should be glad we were girls. One of us could have been named Derrick.

At church a few weeks ago, there was a baptism. I had to listen a couple times to make sure I heard it right.

Memphis James Cleveland.

At least they used James for middle name, and not Detroit, for the full-on, 3-city, dumpster-fire trifecta name.

Memphis is an odd name, but OK. But in combination with Cleveland as surname? Who would do that to a kid? Child abuse.

And I know what you are thinking, but the family was 100% European ancestry as far as I could tell. Kid is definitely eligible for the Bill Simmons Reggie Cleveland All-Star team.

Zachary here.

There was usually at least 1 other in my classes with the same name. I don't really love it or hate it. I've always gone by Zach, which is where frustration came in.

Didn't really like teachers calling me by the full version (even when they would ask if I go by that or Zach). It's also sometimes a struggle to determine if a form is 'official' enough to warrant using the full version. Even on ones I do, I've still always used Zach for the signature..

Yeah, if you weren't from my hometown, you had no clue how to spell or pronounce my maiden name. My married name is shorter and easier to spell, but as it's a fairly German name (albeit Americanized), we still get some interesting spellings/pronunciations.

I'm so glad my taste in names changed from when I was younger. I remember at age 10 wanting to call my (hypothetical) daughter Autumn Rose. Hello instastripper!

I remember reading the Hickory Park dessert menu when I was younger and thinking the "ambrosia sundae" sounded pretty, and decided I wanted Ambrosia for a daughter.

Is this a clever way of making this thread about your strip club thread? Ambrosia is a porn/stripper name if I ever heard.

Right? Talk about forcing your child into a certain profession from birth. I'm so glad I rethought that as I got older. It would totally be a stripper name. Or a drag queen.

AmBrosia

I never even thought about that. It's totally the perfect drag queen name.

My husband worked with a girl once who wanted to name her daughter "Animosity," because she liked the way it flowed.

That would be horrible, and she would have had to name her other children something like Sloth and envy

I've always wanted to google and see if I could find a child named that. This wasn't a 13-year-old or anything, either - she was an adult and worked at the same office as him.

I know Lucca was mentioned as a name that we wouldn't want to name our kid. It has to be common where we associate a name with someone we disliked at some point in our life and vow to never name our child that.

There was a kid named Brad I knew growing up that was a grade A doosh. My wife once mentioned the name Bradley to me and I nixed it and gave no room for argument.

Brads are always douches.

This is why I hate my name. Every Brad I've ever met, other than myself of course, has been pretty cool. But every doosh in the movies is named Brad.

Surprisingly, my name made the top 25, though I have not met a lot of people with the same name. I am a junior, named for my dad, although he has always gone by his middle name. I didn't really like it growing up because it rhymes with a lot of other "-uck" words.

We had Kyle James picked out for our son, but had all girls. Hannah Elizabeth, Jennifer Elise, and Molly Beth.

We made a conscious effort to stay away from first/last name rhymes etc, and tried to stay fairly common.

I'm surprised Neil wasn't in the top 25 for 45 year olds. I heard there were a ton of boys named that after the first moon landing.

When people ask me about boys names, I always throw out Herkimer Elvis for their consideration.

My last name is pronounced wrong a lot more than I would think it should be. People just dont believe how it is pronounced.

Coolest guy I knew back in grade school was named Scott. And I thought that was the coolest name and I wanted to be Scott. But my last name is Scott so it would have been really stupid. Now when people call me Scott I get mad because that's not my name.

2 first names is a curse.

I was told to never trust a guy with two first names.

About the only good thing about growing up Catholic was getting to pick your own confirmation name. I chose Anthony, because I always wanted to be named Tony.

My name is Ryan, and I mostly like it. The problems are that there are no older men named Ryan so it seems kind of like a boy's name than a man's name, and that R is too much work to write in cursive. Ry-Devyn, and Ryeesha sound like good names for my future children.
