Friday OT - Names

I mentioned before that we could never agree on boys names. When we were due with our third, about a month before she was due we were watching the Masters. I jokingly said if Charl Schwartzel won, that would be our boy's name (first and middle). Anyone remember who won the 2011 Masters? Thankfully we had a girl.

Not that we are even there yet, but I have a much easier time with boy names over girl names. I hear everyone say they can never find a boy name, and I'm over here like got any nice girl names?! Husband and I agree on nothing for girls, which works for him because he, like CynadoAlley, is convinced he will only shoot Y chromosomes.

Boys are simple on many, many levels. Names are one of them.

I also have an androgynous name. Pair that up with a professional that is male dominated -- sometimes it makes for wide eyes when I show up for a meeting where the participants were clearly expecting someone much different.

It's not that common, SS websites says anything from 600-900 most popular over the years. I rarely run into someone with the same name but it does happen.

No kids so naming pets is as hard as it gets for us. The new kittens are Boon and Otter (Donald "Boon" Schoenstein and Eric "Otter" Straton) from Animal House. When we took them in for their first vet appointment (we adopted them from the vet -- were brought in relatively newborn so spent a few weeks there before we could being them home) the young vet techs asked what we named them. -- They didn't get it and it wasn't entirely clear if they were even familiar with Animal House. Yowsa, a little piece of my soul perished that day.

If it helps, I recognized them right away. Much better choices than Flounder & Nedermeyer...

random cat story, so we had a kitten named Witness because as a lil kitten, a tomcat came in and killed all of her siblings. She was the only one left alive. Then when she had kittens just past weaning age, she hauled two of them off to a field, and we found one at the neighbors about a month later. She was trying to kill the kittens! So clearly the killing of her siblings was a hit job. Witness became Bitchness. We also had cats named Bulgy who became Blindy, Hopper, the 3 legged cat, and Jed, the scaggy looking redneck cat. Those were actually all named by my brother. I fear for his childrens' names some day. Slimey, Conehead, and Smushyface.

My beautiful Smudgy (black, longhaired, 18 lbs of affection) started life as lil' Smushyface. It kind of morphed into Smudgy. He just had this adorable little face as a newborn. :) I lost him a year ago, and his brother Garf about 2 months ago. They were the affectionate lap cats, and I was missing that badly...which is why we adopted Molly & Milo. They won't replace Smudgy & Garf, but they are filling an empty space in my life (and lap).

FWIW, I used to work with medical records, so I've seen them all. Three that stick out are Talon, Tiphanie (Really?), and Crystal Glass. My coworkers and myself would always say "There needs to be a test...." before allowing parents to name their kids.

My husband had a coworker whose son's name was Blaze.

It kind of annoys me that all three of my older brothers and their wives have been so secretive over their firstborn names. They think their friends of that age are going to steal their names. (Granted my cousin also named her son Oliver a year after my nephew was born.)

It's a ways down the road for me, but when I get there I will name my kids older, less common names. I don't really mind if they are dated.

They're smart, it happens all the time. We made the mistake of announcing our first girl's name very early and my wife's cousin (who was due around the same time) decided to suddenly change their babies name a month before she was due to the same name. I didn't really care, but man if you want to **** off a pregnant woman, steal her babies name. My wife said the name was ruined for her so we changed it and I actually like the name far more that we ended up with even though I didn't want to change it.

I learned my lesson, my wife didn't. Fast forward two years and we are expecting a boy. We don't announce the few names we are favoring, but once again my wife has another cousin (who she is much closer with) with the EXACT same due date. My cousin texts my wife the names shes considering and asks what names we like. Of course I tell her to not TELL ANYONE, but she goes ahead and tells her the two names we are strongly considering. A month later she texts my wife asking if its OK if they use one of those two names, which of course was the one we decided we were going with. Had to deal with all that stupid drama again, I couldn't believe it, once again we had to change the name.

And I am also a big fan of old fashioned names. If you want a more unique name, just pick an older name instead of trying to be cute by spelling a name differently or naming your kid something completely ridiculous. Remember that their name goes on a resume someday, I cringe for all the boys being named Cayden, Brayden, Jayden etc. that have to use their name professionally someday.

I think its much easier to name girls too, we struggled with boy names like some other people mentioned in this thread. Its easier to be more unique with girls names than boys names. George, Charles, Henry, William, etc. older boys names are by far my favorite. These names are timeless.

Also, years back I use to work with two girls who were sisters

Their names...

champagne and chardonnay

And no..it wasn't a strip club.

I'm sure it's been mentioned already, but I haven't read through this entire thread to check, but in the book "Freakonomics", they talk about what a disservice some parents do in naming their children.

If two identically the same resumes are looked at by someone, and one has the name Karen on it and the other has something like Latesha or Blaze or something, Karen will get the interview over them nearly every time.

So some of these parents, who think it's cool for their kid to have some really strange name that nobody else has, are really putting their child behind the 8 ball to start their life. How nice of them!

Doubt it's the same set but I went to school with two sisters named that. I can see where the mom was coming from since those words do roll off the tongue, but it's still a stupid idea. Your kids are going to have to live with that decision for the rest of their lives, or go through the hassle of getting a name change.

You obviously should have raised it with "The Code of Cowgirl"
