Ferentz new deal

Just for the record, the Vette ZR1 eats Ferraris for breakfast. Yes, it's over 100k but that's still only a third of the cost for a nice Ferrari.

In a straight line, yes the Vette wins. As soon as they have to make turns, the Corvette is done.

I would rather have a versatile car that performs in many different situations (Ferrari) as opposed to just a straight line drag race.

I can name 10 coaches that could via for top 5 rating and have more window dressing than coach Ferenz.

Urban Meyer
Bob Stoops
Pete Carol
Mack Brown
Bobby Bowden(Okay he does cheat)
Joe Paterno
Jim Tressel
Nick Saban
Les Myles(thanks by the way giving me his name)
Steve Spurrier(Ok Kirk had his way with him, but who has a National Championship ring?)

First of all it's impossible to say if most of these guys are better coaches. If Ferentz coached at recruiting factories who knows, maybe he'd win a championship.

Paterno and Bowden being on this list is pretty funny. Paterno barely coaches at all anymore and Bowden's teams have stunk lately in a very mediocre conference.

Spurrier...right now? What has he done since he left Florida?

Is it a coincidence that most of the coaches on your list coach at places that basically recruit themselves? USC, Texas, Florida, OSU

For the record, I think Saban is the best coach in college football. He's won everywhere he's gone. He is a liar, but one heck of a coach. Ferentz would be in the 10-15 range for me.

Oh come on....

My reply was for a poster who said Ferenz was a top 5 coach.

He's a good coach. I just don't think he's that good a coach...

You replied to me, I did not say he was a Top 5 coach.

I also will say that I don't think calling Kirk a Top 5 coach is that big of a stretch.

Yeah I guess a lot of other people agree with you since you're paying him like a top 5 coach...:rolleyes:

Remember my Corvette & Ferrari analogy...

Actually DJK15 was the author of that now famous quote.

Gotcha.

Here's the thing......

Winning in college football doesn't make you a bad coach. It only makes you a coach that does not completely suck. UNLESS........you win at a school like Iowa where you can't get 4 and 5 star players on a consistent basis.

Les Myles, Urban Meyer, Petey, etc........ Give me a break. You have to be Ron Zook bad to not win with that talent.

Why don't you give me a list of coaches that have produced more NFL players with as low of a percentage of 4-5 star recruits as Ferentz has had and also using the same criteria, show me how many coaches can claim as much overall success given his lack of number of 4-5 star recruits?

I'm also curious to know how many NFL Defensive Players of the Year there have been over the last couple of decades other than Bob Sanders that came to college as 2-star recruits? I'd venture to guess that answer is 1 or less..........with "less" being the favorite.

I'm not going to work at all to find any of that out since I'm not a fan....

One name. Bryce Paup...

No one uses any logic in this entire thread. Just arguing to argue. Perfect example of how anyone can twist their view.

Guess what, no one wins. Not one post in this thread turned heads.

Some dude said Ferentz was average if you took away his good years.

The djk dude turned it around on that poster by saying Ferentz was a top 5 coach if you take away his bad years. He was actually making a decent point.

Both are right if you could actually add or subtract years.

So then, by that token, can we also look at the number of off field problems Ferentz has had? He'd be in the Top 5 of active coaches.

All things considered...

Like it or not, by and large a "successful" coach is measured by W-L. It's just reality.

Same as programs. W-L, all that really matters. tOSU must be leaps and bounds better than scUM. When is the last time scUM has won that matchup???

I call your Bob Sanders and raise with a Dallas Clark. I can't say with 100% certainty...but I'm pretty sure Demond was a 1* or 0* coming out of high school...while Dallas was a walk-on, and won the Mackey Award. Both were damn fine players...

Either way...KF may not be a top 5 coach, but he's treated like royalty in Iowa City, right or wrong, and no Iowa taxpayers are forced to pay a dime towards his salary...since the UI AD is self supporting...not so sure about the new fellow out west though...

But you can't add or subtract the good or bad years. So here are the complete college records for six top current coaches. Which one doesn't fit with the others?

Mack Brown 115-26 .816 1 nat'l title
Pete Carroll 88-15 .854 2 nat'l titles
Kirk Ferentz 82-74 .526 0 nat'l titles
Urban Meyer 83-17 .830 2 nat'l titles
Bob Stoops 109-24 .820 1 nat'l title
Jim Tressel 218-76-2 .736 1 nat'l title

If you still can't see which one doesn't fit in, here's a clue: 5 of the 6 will be in the College Football Hall of Fame. Guess which one won't make it?

Texas: National Power with or without Brown
USC: National Power with or without Carroll
Florida: National Power with or without Meyer
Oklahoma: National Power with or without Stoops
tOSU: National Power with or without Tressel

Don't want to take away anything from these guys but it is easier to win when there is already a winning tradition. Still tons of pressure but simply have better skill.

I hate to say this but Ferentz has done a top notch job at Iowa. Just like McCarney did a top notch at ISU. Both these guys did more with much less. More impressive than any NC at those top notch programs.

and before any of you say " wait, some of those programs were down when those coaches came in" They still had tons more history and tradition than ISU or Iowa has ever had. Top programs do have down years but it is much easier once you get them going again.
