First of all it's impossible to say if most of these guys are better coaches. If Ferentz coached at recruiting factories who knows, maybe he'd win a championship.
Paterno and Bowden being on this list is pretty funny. Paterno barely coaches at all anymore and Bowden's teams have stunk lately in a very mediocre conference.

Is it a coincidence that most of the coaches on your list coach at places that basically recruit themselves? USC, Texas, Florida, OSU
For the record, I think Saban is the best coach in college football. He's won everywhere he's gone. He is a liar, but one heck of a coach. Ferentz would be in the 10-15 range for me.

Winning in college football doesn't make you a bad coach. It only makes you a coach that does not completely suck. UNLESS........you win at a school like Iowa where you can't get 4 and 5 star players on a consistent basis.
Les Myles, Urban Meyer, Petey, etc........ Give me a break. You have to be Ron Zook bad to not win with that talent.
Why don't you give me a list of coaches that have produced more NFL players with as low of a percentage of 4-5 star recruits as Ferentz has had and also using the same criteria, show me how many coaches can claim as much overall success given his lack of number of 4-5 star recruits?
I'm also curious to know how many NFL Defensive Players of the Year there have been over the last couple of decades other than Bob Sanders that came to college as 2-star recruits? I'd venture to guess that answer is 1 or less..........with "less" being the favorite.

Both are right if you could actually add or subtract years.
So then, by that token, can we also look at the number of off field problems Ferentz has had? He'd be in the Top 5 of active coaches.

Like it or not, by and large a "successful" coach is measured by W-L. It's just reality.
Same as programs. W-L, all that really matters. tOSU must be leaps and bounds better than scUM. When is the last time scUM has won that matchup???
I call your Bob Sanders and raise with a Dallas Clark. I can't say with 100% certainty...but I'm pretty sure Demond was a 1* or 0* coming out of high school...while Dallas was a walk-on, and won the Mackey Award. Both were damn fine players...
Either way...KF may not be a top 5 coach, but he's treated like royalty in Iowa City, right or wrong, and no Iowa taxpayers are forced to pay a dime towards his salary...since the UI AD is self supporting...not so sure about the new fellow out west though...

Don't want to take away anything from these guys but it is easier to win when there is already a winning tradition. Still tons of pressure but simply have better skill.
I hate to say this but Ferentz has done a top notch job at Iowa. Just like McCarney did a top notch at ISU. Both these guys did more with much less. More impressive than any NC at those top notch programs.
and before any of you say " wait, some of those programs were down when those coaches came in" They still had tons more history and tradition than ISU or Iowa has ever had. Top programs do have down years but it is much easier once you get them going again.
