Ferentz new deal

I honestly can't believe people are so dim-witted that there are those that actually believe it's a struggle to make it in society with a multi-million dollar salary. Then again, certain pro athletes (particularly some NBA players) and now apparently idiotic journalists obviously prove otherwise...

The last line is pretty funny---from Cityview:

It turns out that that $3.02 million Kirk Ferentz is getting annually — and the 35 hours of jet time — is just part of his deal to coach football at the University of Iowa. If Iowa finishes in the top 25 football teams, he gets another $100,000 — and the figure goes up the higher the team finishes. He gets $175,000 if he’s undefeated in the Big 10 or wins the conference title, and he gets $100,000 if he shares the title. He gets anywhere from $25,000 to $175,000 for going to a bowl game — it depends on the bowl — and $25,000 if he’s Big Ten Coach of the Year. Throw in another $50,000 if he’s National Coach of the Year or if he wins any of 15 or more coaching awards. Finally, he gets $75,000 if the annual graduation rate of his players is over 70 percent. He and his wife each get a car (with insurance), too, and, of course, lots of football tickets for their friends. Still, it can be tough to make ends meet on this — Iowa City can be an expensive place to live — so the university “will make a good faith effort to negotiate a reduced-rate membership at University Athletic Club for head coach, coaching staff, and families.â€

The dues at the University Athletic Club are $84 a month. ...

That is funny. Surprise, surprise his son was living in subsidized housing.

Hate to agree with a hawkeye....but that was from the "Civic Skinny" section of City View--the line about being hard to make ends meet was very much said in jest.

"Almost identical" = not as good. And that's with KF having 12 game schedules that include an extra game every year against a team like Maine, UNI, Montana State, or Western Michigan -- a 12th game against a creampuff that Fry rarely had.

To sum up the comparison:

Fry took over a bad program and made it significantly better.

McCarney took over a bad program and made it significantly better.

Ferentz took over a good program (built by Fry) and did not make it significantly better. He made it slightly worse.

In his first 10 years Ferentz has won 2 Big 10 championships, gone to a BCS bowl (Orange), and finished three seasons ranked in the AP top 10.

In the 10 years immediately prior to Ferentz taking over, Iowa won 1 Big 10 championship, went to a BCS-level bowl (Rose, albeit before BCS was formed), and finished one season ranked in the AP top 10.

In Fry's first 10 years he won 2 Big 10 championships, went to two BCS-level bowls, and finished zero seasons ranked in the AP top 10.

You also have to factor in Penn St., which didn't begin conference play until 1993. So Iowa only had to compete with them for the conference title in 6 of the 10 years prior to Ferentz taking over. And obviously Fry never had to compete with them in his first 10 years.

Not saying Ferentz has made the program significantly better, but worse? Once again, your logic astounds.
