this feels like one of those he is doing such a bad job its almost stealing money type things.
How crazy are contracts when he is pretty much burning Nebraska basketball to the ground (what was left of it anyway) and he walks away with 20 million for leaving.
Here is the past years for Fred.
ISU
Final year: Gets embarrassed by UAB in the first round - leaves for the bulls for 5yr/25 million.
Bulls:
Y1: missed the playoffs for first time in 8 years. People were not happy about this.
Y2: playoffs but got swept round 1. (biggest achievement, but was said to underachieve big time again)
ESPN ranked Hoiberg in 2017 as the worst head coach in the league
Y3: fired Fred after a 5-19 start.
Nebraska in March 2019 7yr contract for way too much money
Y1 - 7 wins
Y2 - 7 wins
Y3 - 6 wins and counting
He has 5 conference wins in almost 3 years. and 0-12 this year.
That is a whole lot of money and no results. Would be interesting to know where he would have ended up if he stayed in Ames? Maybe guys like TJ and crew were the ones getting the players and it really didn't matter too much about coaching.
Either way, he is probably going to get canned and make a crap ton of money from Nebraska. He should just hang it up and golf. I think he walked into a bad situation at Chicago, but he is smart enough, he should have seen it coming. Good luck Fred.
In year 2 the Bulls won the first 2 games of the first round against the Celtics and then lost 4 in a row.
Fred was fired in year 4 with Chicago.
