Down goes Freddy

this feels like one of those he is doing such a bad job its almost stealing money type things.

How crazy are contracts when he is pretty much burning Nebraska basketball to the ground (what was left of it anyway) and he walks away with 20 million for leaving.

Here is the past years for Fred.

ISU
Final year: Gets embarrassed by UAB in the first round - leaves for the bulls for 5yr/25 million.

Bulls:
Y1: missed the playoffs for first time in 8 years. People were not happy about this.
Y2: playoffs but got swept round 1. (biggest achievement, but was said to underachieve big time again)
ESPN ranked Hoiberg in 2017 as the worst head coach in the league
Y3: fired Fred after a 5-19 start.

Nebraska in March 2019 7yr contract for way too much money
Y1 - 7 wins
Y2 - 7 wins
Y3 - 6 wins and counting
He has 5 conference wins in almost 3 years. and 0-12 this year.

That is a whole lot of money and no results. Would be interesting to know where he would have ended up if he stayed in Ames? Maybe guys like TJ and crew were the ones getting the players and it really didn't matter too much about coaching.

Either way, he is probably going to get canned and make a crap ton of money from Nebraska. He should just hang it up and golf. I think he walked into a bad situation at Chicago, but he is smart enough, he should have seen it coming. Good luck Fred.

In year 2 the Bulls won the first 2 games of the first round against the Celtics and then lost 4 in a row.

Fred was fired in year 4 with Chicago.

I don't understand the people that actively root for Fred's demise. The guy did a ton for this school as a player, coach, and ambassador throughout the years.

He left and moved on to pursue something else, maybe you should move on too.

Agree with the bolded. Outside of a couple yahoos (including the OP) I don’t think many people are cheering for his failure. A lot of bewilderment at how bad he’s been in Lincoln.

But it IS hilarious that this is happening to Nebraska.

I don't actively root for Fred's demise, but I have to admit I take pleasure when I see Nebraska lose in any sport. It makes me believe karma is real.

Yes I think we can all say **** Nebraska.

Fred has had a huge impact on Iowa State basketball. We should all remember the positive things he did while representing the university. I think his association with Iowa State also benefited him just as much.

he also chose to leave, which was completely his right to do. And he increased his wealth exponentially since he left.

people are going to always talk about Fred here or on other Iowa State forums. Remember the positives, and enjoy the memories.

but he certainly doesn’t deserve our sympathy.

I don’t understand caring at all. For the record, Nebraska losing is funny. Fred just happens to be at the helm.

Despite his success at ISU, it turns out Fred isn't a good coach. And that's probably an understatement. I hope he can enjoy life outside of coaching.

I don't wish him ill will, but I love seeing Nebraska fail.

His lack of experience finally caught up to him. Glad we got to experience the best part of his coaching career

And that's the thing. He didn't just go anywhere, he set up camp in our back yard at a school we despise. Some of us are probably wallowing in his failure a little bit too much, but it is perfectly legitimate for an ISU fan to not want him to have success at NU because that would definitely be bad for ISU.

He had to know better than to go there, he's a smart guy.

Make sure the checks arrive on time.

It's not just their x-coaches getting paid. Nebraska was even paying an x-athletic director to not work for them.

They can go ahead and cash their Big 10 paychecks (if they're even getting a full share now), but it's gotta hurt them and their conference knowing their athletic program and their university has become a doormat. Hey Texas and Oklahoma, pay close attention.
Harvey Perlman continues to be a saint for all husker haters of the world.

IMO, it's because we have a vocal minority in our fan base who are remarkably insecure. The squeakiest wheels making the most noise kind of deal.

Agreed. I don't begrudge Fred for leaving ISU for the NBA. I get it. He left the program better than he found it, and as the fans understood it, he preferred pro ball because parts of the college game weren't his favorite. Fine. No issues with that. Wished him well.

Even when he flamed out in the pros and wanted to come back to college... Sure. Okay, I guess. Weird seeing him wearing a different school's logo, and those things that he didn't like about the college game are still here, but I'm sure his eyes were wide open, and he can coach where he wants.

But then it was Nebraska. That's a tough pill to swallow. Hard to get on board with that, as success for him has the ability to make things harder for Iowa State.

I don't celebrate his failure in Lincoln, (and it is impossible to describe it in any other way) but I am not sad that the huskers continue to be the all singing, all dancing, travelling ****-circus that they have been for the vast majority of my lifetime. I would have preferred not to have watch Fred try to save his career from that quagmire, like a fair haired Atreyu frantically pulling Atrax's reins as he slowly succumbed to the Swamp of Sadness, but it is what it is. It's not like there weren't plenty of warning signs posted.

freddy needs to go back to an NBA front office
I thought this from the beginning. He’s well liked but not a coach, more of an executive. I doubt he will land in a front office now, but the NBA loves to recycle!

I agree with this. I don't hold any ill-will towards Fred, but I also don't hold much sympathy for him either. There's a "be careful what you wish for" component to all this that is in some ways redeeming as you've watched him fail in two different spots.

How on earth does Hoiberg need the $$...LMAO. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess he's not some addicted better who has lost all his money..

Fred had enough money to live comfortably forever with generations of his kids living pretty comfortably....after his NBA days...let alone money he made with ISU and Bulls..

I think this is a joke because stories are out there regarding his greed and cheapness.

there's just something oddly addicting about following the career of someone who could do no wrong....suddenly be unable to do no right. throw in the passions of sports/rivalries and we are where we are.
