LJ's penalty was inexcusable, especially considering he is a 4 year starter & his past history of stupid penalities.
I tend to like the way Barry Sanders celebrated touchdowns.
If you want to trash talk, you need to do it like one of the great trash talkers of all time: Larry Bird. That's right, Larry Bird. Most of you on here probably did not know this (i.e. - you are wet behind the ears), nor can you ever see many highlights where you see Larry openly trash talking. You do it calmly & when no ref can hear it. The only physical part of the bravado is within playing the game. There are no flamboyant gestures or routines. When you do it this way, you fire yourself up & also provoke your opponent to do the bone-headed, in your face head butt, etc in response to your trash-talking, because they become frustrated & want to show you up.
It is about mental toughness. If LJ had to head-butt him after a play because the WR slapped him in the face a couple times shows a lack of mental toughness. 4 year starters & team leaders should have/display more mental toughness. The retaliator almost always gets the flag thrown against them.
Football has 22 large bodies flying around at high speed. Emotion & passion are required to do this optimally. However, there are rules involved within the framework of the game, and those with the most/best mental toughness prevail. This last game was not close on the scoreboard due to a host of other miscues, etc, but the lack of discipline was a large contributing factor, and in close games it WILL be the difference.
Execution & mental toughness. I'm sure these are pillars to Rhoads' coaching style. They have taken hold with this team yet - I'd say due to some of the leadership this year being new. However, LJ is not new to this position, & that is why I (& many fans) were disappointed with him on that play. I am sure we are not as disappointed in him as he is with himself - guarantee.
So, here's to LJ's health (hope he recovers fully & quickly from the injury he sustained), & I'm sure to him playing great & providing outstanding leadership the rest of the season & for the Cyclones to beat Baylor & all opponents here on out.
