Discipline and focus

It's not comparable, CPR is in his third year. GC was only here two years and started with a different quality of player. It's not a fair or logical comparison, so I would not do that. My point is we need focus and discipline and this emotional family crap is clearly not working. 4 games of exactly the same problems is more than a trend. And you really should try to calm down.

GC also started with a different quality of coaches. If you are going to look for trends, then you should look at CPR`s full body of work. How have his teams performed in the TO & penalty areas for 29 games as opposed to just 4 this year? The staff is the same so this comparison is warranted. I am curious as I really don`t know the figures.

Chizik's teams were extremely undisciplined. You don't remember the rash of personal foul penalties we racked up under his leadership?
The penalty and turnover data compared to this year's team does not back you up, but let's not let facts get in the way.

ISU turnover margin ranking
2009: 36th (+.31 per game)
2010: 30th (+.50 per game)
2011: 118th (-2.0 per game)

ISU penalties per game ranking
2009: 35th (5.46 per game)
2010: 58th (5.92 per game)
2011: 119th (9.50 per game)

ISU penalty yards per game ranking
2009: 48th (49.85 per game)
2010: 60th (51.33 per game)
2011: 119th (86.50 per game)

Seems to me these problems are specific to just this year and are not systemic to the Paul Rhoads program.

Each turnover is worth about 40 yards of offense. Therefore, two and a half turnovers diff is worth a hundred yards a game and the penalities of 35 yards is like 70 yards of offense since first downs never made due to bad field position. That is 170 yards worse in total yards than CPRs first two years. This will not work. CPR nmeeds to fix this immediately. I do not care hopw much the players crow if they avoid penalities and turnovers. Until they dod thast, they need to be focused. KO and LJ need to improve being seniors. This is their last year of CFB.

Look at stats from Rhoads 2 1/2 years and compare them to Chizik's.

I have a good stat. Winning percentage at ISU

Chizik : 20.83% (very disciplined though, despite the fact that our defense was always out of place)

Rhoads: 51.72%

Rhoads absolutely has to get the penalties cleaned up. I'm sure he's working on it.

I'd rather not talk about Chizik's teams, let alone use them as any sort of barometer or measuring stick for how a team should behave. Yikes.

Good stuff............Do you think it might be related to poor senior leadership this year??? We lost some good leaders.......could be part of it??

Seems like it - our senior leaders are some of the worst penalty offenders (LJ, Money, and KO).

Perhaps. After all these seniors were recruited by Chizik.......

My guess is the seniors will get a candid lecture on good leadership, setting an example, and a few other treats. I don't mind getting soundly beat by a better team, see utah last year, but I hate losing by ******* down your leg.

LJ's penalty was inexcusable, especially considering he is a 4 year starter & his past history of stupid penalities.

I tend to like the way Barry Sanders celebrated touchdowns.

If you want to trash talk, you need to do it like one of the great trash talkers of all time: Larry Bird. That's right, Larry Bird. Most of you on here probably did not know this (i.e. - you are wet behind the ears), nor can you ever see many highlights where you see Larry openly trash talking. You do it calmly & when no ref can hear it. The only physical part of the bravado is within playing the game. There are no flamboyant gestures or routines. When you do it this way, you fire yourself up & also provoke your opponent to do the bone-headed, in your face head butt, etc in response to your trash-talking, because they become frustrated & want to show you up.

It is about mental toughness. If LJ had to head-butt him after a play because the WR slapped him in the face a couple times shows a lack of mental toughness. 4 year starters & team leaders should have/display more mental toughness. The retaliator almost always gets the flag thrown against them.

Football has 22 large bodies flying around at high speed. Emotion & passion are required to do this optimally. However, there are rules involved within the framework of the game, and those with the most/best mental toughness prevail. This last game was not close on the scoreboard due to a host of other miscues, etc, but the lack of discipline was a large contributing factor, and in close games it WILL be the difference.

Execution & mental toughness. I'm sure these are pillars to Rhoads' coaching style. They have taken hold with this team yet - I'd say due to some of the leadership this year being new. However, LJ is not new to this position, & that is why I (& many fans) were disappointed with him on that play. I am sure we are not as disappointed in him as he is with himself - guarantee.

So, here's to LJ's health (hope he recovers fully & quickly from the injury he sustained), & I'm sure to him playing great & providing outstanding leadership the rest of the season & for the Cyclones to beat Baylor & all opponents here on out.

Not the same people that have been coaching them, apparently poorly in some areas, for the last 3 seasons. Leaders are made not born.

15-14 vs. 5-19.

The first year these seniors played college football, there were 77 penalties for 689 yards. After the new coaching regime came in they went 71-648 and 71-616 the next two years. This year they are at 38-346. In other words, for the frust 3 years these players were here, penalty yards decreased. Are you of the opinion that the coaching staff told them after last season that this was a disturbing trend and they needed to act like idiots this year?

AAC, The subject is senior leadership this year and lack of focus and discipline ---- Dmac was 4 - 18 in his first two years,............... so what?? You really need to move on with your obsession of our previous coach.

Did you hear the one about the fat guy riding a scooter around for days at Disney World? I'll tell you the joke at our next tailgate -- it's a little off-color for here.

Talk about an obsession with a previous coach. Who the hell brought up McCarney? Sure wasn't me. Aren't you related to Rage Robertson? I don't remember the details, but I suppose that is why you hate McCarney and Rhoads. Well, I hate Chizik, so I guess we're both knee jerk morons.

I think the thread progression is something like this.............we had good leadership the last couple of years,.......we wonder if this leadership is lacking this year in someway and whether that has led to the discipline and focus problems we see now. AAC and 85 were trying to pin the problem on who recruited this year's senior leadership and I thought perhaps they were not coached up to be the leaders that we need by CPR and staff. who knows?? I think that's about right.

Oh and AAC (aka "cyclones"spelled backward) is trying to do anything he can to get me banned so he can go brag about it to the good 'ole boys. My money says he will be gone first.

This ******* match between you 3 is of no concern to me, although it is somewhat entertaining. I was merely trying to point out that this season seems to be an anomaly in terms of penalties for this coaching staff. This leads me to believe we are lacking in player leadership, not that the coaching staff is the problem. I'm also of the belief that a persons attitude is very hard to change. LJ has always been one to celebrate quite often and I don't think it's gotten any better or worse in his time here. We may see it more now, but he also has significantly more chances to celebrate than he did in the dismal season that was his freshman year. Is it a result of a former coach recruiting players with potential attitude problems? Possibly, but I think increasing the talent level was significantly more important than worrying about intangibles at that point in the program.
I also actually don't think that LJ or some of the other seniors are bad people, just very excitable and emotional. I have zero problem with 99% of what happens with our players on the field. The bonehead plays coming from a senior and potential all-conference corner? Inexcusable, but it's not like he's the first player to act like an idiot in a big game. This team will learn to play smart in big games as they get more exposure to them. /rambling
