COACHING SEARCH: Thanksgiving night update

I don't see Ken as a home run hire either. It would be interesting, but I'd feel horrible for Lazard, Dvario etc

The next 2 years would be a waste while rebuilding for the option.

Yes, the next two years would be a waste. Then, if he doesn't succeed in the following couple years with his triple option players, then a new coach would come in and the first 2 years of his term would also be a waste due to the triple option players on the roster. Doesn't seem worth the risk.

The triple option is so much more than running. Honestly I watch GT a ton because I worked with some GT grads a few summers ago and what makes it works so well is that the other team stacks the box and it leaves their receivers wide open to pass to. GT actually passes quite a bit and if you have a QB that can throw its 99% one on one coverage.

Fleck without a doubt would bring in recruits the likes of which we've not seen in a long time IMO. Guy might be one the top 3-4 HC recruiters in country...so let that sink in. Not sold that he's the greatest coach or developer of talent but if he surrounded himself with a great staff he would be a great hire IMO. Honestly I figured Fleck wasn't even in the picture as bigger schools would be after him. I've said this numerous times and I still believe it and that is talent wins. The only way we will see ISU come close to competing for the top half of this conf as it sits is to hire a great recruiter as a HC. Just my opinion.

And this is why I don't get the huge mancrush on Ken N by many. Who has this guy ever recruited? Kids come to Navy to serve their country, get an education, and lastly to play football. PJ Fleck, Monken, or even Calhoun with his NFL experience and innovative, fun offense are all way better candidates. I think the guys who want Ken N just like his goody two shoes image. All we ever talk about here is the supposed recruiting difficulties for our football program. Ken N is going to be the answer to that problem? There's no way in hell that guy's a homerun hire. Also FWIW, before Harbaugh was hired at Mich, there was strong interest in Fleck. The guy's a real rising star in the coaching ranks.

We have some of the guys on offense to be a triple option team right away. Lanning would be fine in any offensive system from what I can tell, outside of an air raid. Thomas would be a decent fullback in a triple option. I'm not sure it would work out all that well with Warren though and I have no idea if our offensive lineman in house would work well with it or not.

Imo our WRs would benefit as well under a guy like Fritz.

And you really think the triple option would work in the Big XII? The speed we face on defense negates many of the advantages, and its hard to flip a switch so we'd have several years of rebuilding to get to a place of competitive stature, if we got there at all. Personally I'm not a fan of the triple option and think it would be one of the worst directions we could go, with a defensive coordinator being the only worse direction.

So we have 2 out of the 7 - 8 players needed to make it work?

WMU is likely bound for a pre-Christmas bowl, possibly adding three weeks to an announcement. Would that be a factor in our decision?

Most MAC-level coaches who get plucked by the Power 5 leave their teams before the bowl game to start the new job.

Why would you feel horrible for them? You do realize that Georgia Tech who runs the same offense as Navy has just one fewer WR in the NFL than Alabama right? Two of those GA Tech WRs are Demaryius Thomas and Calvin Johnson. When running the triple option against good teams, you still need two good WRs to keep the Def honest. You want big, tall receivers that can get up and get the ball and have good hands. Exactly what we have in Lazard and Montgomery.

I don't think the true triple option is the best fit for ISU, I still believe in the power run scheme in Ames. Make ISU the Stanford of the midwest and pound the ball at teams, but to say a WR can't make it in a triple option offense isn't true....it's been proven that they can.

My concern is I don't think Fleck would be here more than 2-3 years. While I don't mind being a stepping stone, we need something longer than that.

We probably have more than that. Those are just the two guys who I know would be pretty good fits, and one of them is the guy who is frankly the most important person on the football field. On top of that the current receivers would be fine. Frankly our offensive line loses enough that they'll be a question no matter what the offensive system is. If people are really concerned about having an offensive system everybody on the roster currently can run, they'll see essentially what we've been doing for a while now.

I'd take 2-3 years of football that doesnt make my eyes bleed.

Jeremy - just curious - if you got to hire the next head coach, who would you hire? Who do you think we will end up hiring?

Here's an idea...boosters...stay the hell out of it. Let JP and the search firm do their due diligence, or would you rather upset a potential candidate to the point he sees ISU as a place where he wouldn't be comfortable making any decisions without first asking the almighty boosters.

As opposed to all the other P5 schools where boosters never interfere in the affairs of thr athletic department?

Let's not be naive. Anyone looking to coach football is well aware of how things work. Donors are going to have opinions about a lot of things and university administrators are going to listen to them.

Rod Carey took over a program that he helped build with Kill and has on gone 31-9 in the meantime. I wouldn't discount him though other guys are higher on my list.

honestly, the more I read about Stitt, the more I like the guy.

Yeah, well what's happened when they've been forced to throw? They're awful. Why? Because now their conference has seen it for a few years. I want nothing to do with it. I don't think it's sustainable in a conference that is already using a lot of similar concepts from different formations and is essentially training a defense to stop it not to mention they are built to defend it from a personnel standpoint. If it was a system that worked, others would have used it. No QB that can throw it is going to want to come here to throw it 15 times a game and I don't believe you can be one dimensional.

Fritz, to me, is a little different because he hasn't been forced to adapt yet. They crush it on the ground. I'm still Leary, though. Honestly, I like the system we were using. A run heavy offense with a lot of intermediate passing and a little bit of testing the edges to keep people honest. The more I think about the triple option the more I just don't see it working for very long. I don't want the air raid but I think you have to be able to recruit good QBs that can throw it and I don't think a TO coach can do that.

So, I guess here's where I'm at:

1. Fleck
2. Campbell
3. Frost
4. Fritz
5. Alford

Even if Fleck leaves after three years, the one thing we have very solid proof of is that he will be able to recruit. Even if he recruits the same guys as he was at WMU, he's doing well. AT least if he leaves, there may be something there. With those other guys, who the hell knows. Some of them could flop big time.
