Beach Vacation

Recently semi invited to go to HI with in-laws for a family vacation. with our what will be a 4 & 1.5 yr old. That seems like the opposite of a good time beach vacation to me.

I went to the Maui invitational with my parents and my sub 2 year old, 6 year old, and 8 year old, and we had a ball. Just saying.

Were they pretty drunk? Act careless and unaware? Do dumb things to attract attention? Just as well put a bullseye on you in any seedy nightclub in any city, anywhere. Those looking to rob will find you an easy target. Use your head, you will have no problems. I do not recommend late nights in town. Go back to your resort to get blind stinking drunk. Common sense.

Those girls shouldn't have been wearing such short skirts if they didn't want to get raped, right?

Beyond disgusting, your comment.

Just giving good advice for travelers anywhere. Be smart.

It was a little over the top, but I had hoped we were past blaming the victims, especially considering you're ASSUMING they are "blind drunk" with no evidence of it.

They went to a nightclub in town to party. Silly me to think they were drinking. While on vacation. And robbers pick easier targets. Intoxication makes the target easier. You are correct that I assumed those things. Because that generally fits the the profile of the victims.

Mexican resorts and resorts across the Caribbean are just like most large American cities, walking around, drinking and shopping during the day is not a problem. But the later it gets, the greater chance you are going to be mugged or robbed.
It sucks, but that is just the way it is, we are always back at the resort by the time the sun goes down is our rule. Heard to many stories from people thinking they will be safe, and they found out otherwise.

Wise move. I actually stay in Playa del Carmen. On the beach one block from Fifth Avenue. Always feel safe. But we don’t stay out late at night. Day drinking mostly. Way past the nightclub stage in life. Plus we enjoy the days and don’t want to sleep a hangover off by sleeping all day.

Ive been to Riviera Maya 3 times, but not in the last 10 years. We took a "bus"(mini van) from the resort into Playa. We were told not to stay past dark back then. It was sketchy and we stayed a little too late, but left with both kidneys. It's not worth going off resort.

If you ever go, pay a tiny bit extra for private transportation to and from airport.

Had our flight to key west that went through cancelled a couple days ago, ended up going through Dallas. Supposed to go back through charlotte on Wednesday, my hopes are not high.
Nailed it, Flight to charlotte delayed 6 hours, going through Dallas again.

personally I'm not a fan of Mexico, the beaches I've been to there were always rocky. Punta Cana and St Lucia are my top 2 places. We will see how Antigua stacks up this fall.

Will probably be booking a trip to Curacao for a couple years from now (really excited for this).

Curacao is a great little island, I tend to think the former Dutch islands are the best ones, but we liked Curacao a lot better than Aruba, just a little cooler and a lot greener. Aruba is like the New Mexico or Arizona, really dry area, but a lot to do.

If you’re strictly just hanging out at a beach and then looking for dining at night there’s cheaper places than Maui or Kauai that would be comparable in Mexico or the Caribbean. If you have an adventures bone whatsoever and like to hike, boogie board or explore islands then Maui and Kauai are the play. There’s nowhere that can compete that I’ve been to from a raw beauty and awe perspective.

A month after going to Belize we went to Maui for My wife's work sales event. We went a few days early and did an Airbnb in Kihei. Maui was lovely buy just too many people for my taste. People on the beach, traffic, long waits for every resturaunt, etc. Later, when the sales conference started, we stayed at the Ritz Carlton Maui and all of those concerns went away but I would never pay that much to stay at a hotel.
So in summary, I'm happy we got to go but a big part of my enjoyment is lack of people. When we go to Isla Majures, we stay in a house with its own pool and most of the resturaunts are not busy on the south side of the island.

We stayed here when we were on Isla for a wedding many years ago and it was awesome. Looks like they've improved the private beach, it was pretty rocky when we were there. But our room's outdoor terrace was massive with a hot tub.

That looks really nice. We've been 7 times and never considered a hotel. We go with another couple to split expenses and you can stay in a million dollar house for about $300 night.
