Beach Vacation

We just got back from the "Redneck Riviera" Alabama orange beach/gulf shores. It's definitely not Hawaii or Caribbean nice, but seems under rated as far as beaches go. Finding a non crappy bathroom to stop at in the drive through Mississippi was the biggest downfall.

This is great info. Thanks.

We've neve been so we are staying on North Beach so that downtown is walking distance. the one place I hear multiple people mention about eating is something like North Garden. Do you know anything about it?

Yep, they are a great place for breakfast on the north side. In my review last year I said
" Hot cake trio with Spanish sausage was awesome. The best service on the island that I've experienced. "

Trying to get a family trip set up in Feb next year. Wondering is 35 minutes enough on a connecting flight from DSM to Charlotte and then to Jamaica or would I be off with a 45 minute layover if going to Miami? Plenty of time on the way back to go through customs. That’s all the package has for getting there in that date. I can’t change dates due to other family members flights.

That's awfully tight. Just one minor hiccup in DSM and you're screwed, and that's not uncommon in Feb. Even if everything's on time, Charlotte's a big airport and I'd be nervous about my luggage (if any of you are checking any) making it from the regional jet to the one bound for Jamaica in time. Even 45 minutes in Miami is cutting it close IMO, but I'm usually ok with a longer layover, especially on vaca. Eliminates the stress and you can always find a place to grab a drink between flights.

Prefer Charlotte over Miami. We have done several trips to Jamaica by traveling through Charlotte. We have booked flight for the day before, stayed in Charlotte, and had an early flight to Jamaica for the next day.

Charlotte's airport seems to always be torn up. It's an odd one. IIRC there's like old white rocking chairs in the main terminal.

Agree, we flew through there to Jamaica once as well. And I pretty much hate all things Florida. I just think 35 minutes to connect is really cutting it close, especially if he's traveling with family, kids, luggage, etc.

It's torn up now and also having a ton of cancelled flights.

I just spent a week in Ft. Lauderdale. The beaches there are pretty good. Nice white sand and clear blue water. Not a fan of the area in general, but if you're strictly talking going to the beach it was really nice IMO. My basis for comparison is gulf coast Florida beaches, which I've never been impressed with, and Riviera Maya, which was nicer but not a lot nicer.

Outside of winter that is plenty of time. Winter time waiting inline to de-ice can take up all of that connecting time. Also if you can't get to seats in the front of plane good luck on deplaning from the back row.

Had our flight to key west that went through cancelled a couple days ago, ended up going through Dallas. Supposed to go back through charlotte on Wednesday, my hopes are not high.

Miami is two or three times the size of Charlotte, and its a long walk from one terminal to another, I would give at least a couple of hours between flights, just in case of mechanical or weather problems.

Recently semi invited to go to HI with in-laws for a family vacation. with our what will be a 4 & 1.5 yr old. That seems like the opposite of a good time beach vacation to me.

I'm guessing LilMan would remember it the youngest one probably not. Plus side you might have some pretty good babysitting help with you and well, your in Hawaii.
