It's not really funny . . . but I find 'violent rape' to be a funny term. As opposed to kind and gentle rape? I think there's a word for that? :jimlad:

Yeah. No rape is "kind or gentle," but there's definitely a difference between non-consensual sex and non-consensual sex that involves hitting/choking/etc. I don't think one is "better" than the other, but the added elements of forcible and intentional injury definitely need highlighting in some cases. That said, in some people's minds that's the only kind of rape. Someone simply saying "no," but the perpetrator continuing anyway is sometimes dismissed as "not rape."

Are Miller and Condon accusing the staff of covering this up? Acting like the staff should have held him out of spring ball is ludicrous unless you are saying they knew of it before May 2nd, when the criminal complaint was actually lodged.

I don't think accusing. They are asking questions. I do say I agree that if they knew and he participated that doesn't look great, however, if Campbell knew something happened but no formal charges occurred until yesterday I can understand why he participated.

In this case, fracturing her back and then raping her multiple times had to be extremely painful. Throw in the fact that after three years together, he’s not even letting her get medical attention and it’s gut wrenching. The directory still has him enrolled in Criminal Justice, so I hope at least this made The Daily and somebody out there is warning other students.

I'll give Campbell the benefit of the doubt. I don't know the details or what the procedure might be in this situation. Ralph getting physical with his girlfriend and fracturing her back is enough that he should have been gone from the team.

Knowing how Campbell and the program he runs operates, he probably isn’t going to just tell Ralph to pack his bags and get lost. Matt and co. will probably do what they can to help him in the way he needs help, make sure he’s got the tools to be stable enough once the dust settles, then send him in his way.

I believe, Campbell has a duty to be a coach and fatherly figure to the men in his program, and when these 17-18 year old kids leave their families to join the ISU family, Matt feels an obligation to set them up for success in life after college, in good or bad situations, and he wouldn’t be fulfilling his end of the deal (to the best he could given the circumstances) if he told Ralph to take a hike, I want nothing to do with you.
Campbell should absolutely immediately tell him to pack his bags and get lost. I would hope any help from anyone involved in the program was cut off the moment they learned he assaulted and violently raped a girl.

Yeah, no..that’s not how Campbell runs his program. The kid made a life altering mistake, Campbell will help him how he can and deny him on his way. We’ve seen him do this before with other guys in the past, albeit their situations weren’t as severe as this, but he still wants them to succeed in life if possible

He has indeed told him to pack his bags.

Ehhh....I really don't think so.

Its one thing when a kid makes a minor screw up and can benefit from some mentoring from an authority figure to set him back on the right path.

Its entirely a different thing when he violently rapes someone. Thats sever all ties immediately time.

I can guarantee you Campbell will not do everything he can to help this guy. This isn't something you can come back from.

I wonder if the slow play, if you will of releasing this guy is: 1) Campbell et al didn’t know about it until the arrest yesterday. It is possible the girl didn’t file charges until very recently. I don’t think that is likely but perhaps possible, or 2) University lawyers stepped in, assuming here Campbell did know since December, and advised him to do nothing until the PD arrest him. I am leaning towards the latter. Why? I know people on campus who have worked with ISU legal counsel and they have a reputation of being cautious. Perhaps overly so, but are very risk adverse, so if Campbell kicked him off the team in December before an arrest and whatnot maybe ISU lawyers saw a potential for legal response from this guy if charges were dropped.

Did someone just call committing a very violent rape a “mistake”?

OWI is a mistake. If the allegations against Ralph are true, he should be put down.

I probably consider an OWI much more serious than the median person.

You're operating a piece of equipment that kills 100 Americans a day. While drunk. There are a thousand ways to prevent finding oneself in that situation in the first place and, even if you end up drunk and needing to get somewhere, all of us have mobile phones to call friends, family, or rideshare apps.

So it is more than a "mistake" to me.

But even then, an OWI is a speck compared to what Ralph is accused of.
