2022 Recruiting/Transfer Class

I don’t think you can assume equal buy-in and effort, there are just too many factors. Last year’s team was also 7-2 (including post-season) in games decided by 5 or fewer points, which is probably not sustainable. They over-achieved mightily, I enjoyed every second of it, and they should be celebrated for it, but it’s probably fair to temper expectations for year two, as well.
Hard to know whether they over-achieved, but I agree we should factor in possibly less buy-in and effort, as well as not winning as many close games when guessing most plausible outcomes for next year.

I tend to be optimistic TJ and Co will get the effort and buy-in- they recruit it better than the previous staff- and they built a base in defense, so the impact on that is less readily measurable in recruiting. They can only do so much to overcome talent though, and with NIL, the improvements to roster talent got harder.

Without reminding me of 'position-less basketball', is Ward more of a '4' or a '5'? Praised for his ability to guard multiple positions.

FWIW, I think Holmes is a lock to commit sometime soon. The fact he entered the portal then almost immediately was visiting ISU is telling.

I know there has been a lot of noise around AJ Green, Duke fans (now that they are aware of him) want him. But I still think he ends up at ISU.

Council and Bates: I have kinda in the same "maybe" tier. The thing with them is that they both have more than one year left to play at the college level which is often overlooked. I would assume a lot of teams are in and out on them and it would be awesome to get one of em.
Domino #1 has fallen, hope the rest follow!

I have no idea on what big we will land, if there is one. Thoughts were we would land the kid from Ohio or Wright State. With one off the table and maybe the second going to the ACC, we are left currently with Bates as our target.

I’m sure there will be names popping up soon, so if that’s our only need at least we can focus on that one position

CW said on the Sunday night pod that it sounds like Bates is out of the picture, and he expects it to be Basile or Osunniyi for the last post spot
At first I was all about the adding Basile (or Vander Pas) to give ISU the stretch 4 option to improve the offense. As the process played out and Bates became a reality I think I'd prefer a defensive rim running/blocking center. The way the defense was the strength of the team adding another athletic post to Ward could weaponize the staff's defense for next year. Just a change for me as I've been offense over defense since Hoiball but TJ's team last year has me rethinking the strategy at least for this year.

We need scorers too.

I think his offensive skillset limits him to being a 5. Maybe if Basille or another big came in that could stretch the court, Ward would be the 5 offensively but 4 defensively in certain matchups. But my expectation is that Ward will play all of his minutes at the 5. His best skillset is also rim protection, which would be diminished if he was at the 4 defensively.

We already seen what happens when you only have 1 or 2 scorers.
And that scorer isn’t the defender or rebounder of the one last year.

A lot riding on getting Basile, and/or Holmes being a better #2 scorer in the B12 than he was for a mid-pack A10 team.

Sweet 16?

jk, I get what you're saying.
A lot of truth in just getting enough scorers to get enough ugly wins to reach the tournament from the B12- after that it’s a crapshoot but defense should give us a chance regardless of seed.

Don't forget about Tre King, just because he is missing 10 games. He will be there for the heart of the schedule. Have to believe that practicing with the team for a full year, he'll come in up to speed.
