2022 Recruiting/Transfer Class

Bates and Basile should commit this week some time, per CW podcast. Doesn't sound great with Bates, or Basile.

Would be huge if we could get in on the St Bonaventure C that's in the portal. If we miss out on both Bates and Basile.

Would love to get a post scorer, but would be more then happy with another big that can switch onto guards and not get beat off the dribble.
Does Basile have a "list of finalists"? I can't remember who's in the running/expected landing spot.

Per CW and Blum, it's not an upgrade overall by any means, but it's a solid back court for big 12. Probably because of Hunters upside.

I think Green is an upgrade over IZB. He shoots better, and isn't limited to only driving left. Holmes has proven that he can shoot at a high clip, so you just hope last year was an anomaly.

Holmes was 8th in the NCAA in total minutes played last year.

After listening to that latest podcast I feel significantly better about the Holmes signing.

Now our guards are all 6'4ish+, And are all above average defenders. So there is a chance we are upgraded on D, even with losing Hunter.
It’s questionable whether Williams-AJG-Holmes is better offensively than Hunter-AJG-Gabe imo. Not having Gabe is a big gain though.

Defensively I think it’s a step back. Williams will do very well just to be equal to Hunter. Is Holmes as good on defense as Gabe? Green is not better than IB on defense or rebounding.

Perhaps AJG is better on offense than IB in the B12. They’re rather different. IB did shoot 3P well, had an elite mid range game, and could finish. AJG may have a better season on 3P but it’s unlikely his mid range or finishing is as good. He may be able to create more, but we’ll see. On defense and rebounding it’s not close.

Also don't understand the need for him if they get Green.
Green is the priority of the staff and ISU is the favorite assuming the NBA doesn't become a legit option. If AJ committed tomorrow I would assume the staff would bow out of the Council IV recruitment until then it doesn't hurt to keep in contact.

If they can get Green and another decent big the roster is a whole will be better than last year. Last year's team maxed out on its potential so the question will be can next year's team do that. It isn't a given. But I live the size they are adding and it seems like the defense could actually improve some because of that size. Only guard on the team under 6'3 will be Lipsey. Makes it easier to switch more on defense.

He’s a 6’6” athletic guard with very good rebounding %, FTA rate, decent assist rate. Very good and versatile defender.

He’s like junior year IB. A career 33% 3P shooter. He fits very well with AJG
Yeah he could play with Green but I am saying if they land Green they have a guards and I think the bigger need is a big. I mean if they land Green and can't find a big to get then yeah bring him on but I am guessing they would rather land a 5.

Between AJ and IB yes, but Williams & Holmes rebounding >>> Gabe and Tyrese.
It's not 3 seperate 1 for 1 trades. It's Tyrese, Brockington, and Gabe for Williams, Green, and Holmes (and still Gabe we assume.)

"Iowa State: T.J. Otzelberger quickly shot up the ranks as one of the elite defensive coaches in the country. The Cyclones landed Temple transfer Jeremiah Williams due to his terrific defensive instincts. Council might be even savvier on the defensive end. Iowa State is losing Izaiah Brockington and Tyrese Hunter, so there are plenty of opportunities for Council to flex his muscles offensively. Williams, Council and Gabe Kalscheur would form a trio of guards that can make opposing teams miserable with their blanketing defense."

Adding a top-4 guard is more important than adding to the time share in the front court. If we need 4 bigs for 2 spots because we haven’t yet landed a starter, Jones, the senior 5th guy gets booted. There’s not a lot gained from having a 3rd 5.

We were short in talent and numbers at guard last year, and lost our two best. Adding AJG, Williams, and Holmes MAYBE gets us back to parity with last year’s starting lineup, although defense and rebounding not as strong.

Defense as a whole is better. AJG isn't as good as Isiah, Williams and Holmes aren't as good as Hunter. We still have Gabe.

Hunter was only 6ft. With Williams and Holmes both being 6'4+ that allows us to be able to switch everything, and not be in as bad of a miss match. So it might be a minor down grade on the wings. But Holmes is a grown man, and Williams is a legit defender.

Our Post D will be far and away better then last year though. Ward is better then George and Jones. Not only at protecting the rim, but at being able to guard on the perimeter if he's switched onto a guard.

I also think AJG being a proven scorer (even in the Missouri Valley) is an upgrade over IZB. Even if it's not a major upgrade, he's averaged roughly 18+ for 3 years now. He was also a former top 100 recruit, so he'll be able to score. We just need Holmes to find that mid 30%+ from range again.

The staff is really high on Watson and Eli King.

(assuming AJG is here) We are 100% a better team athletically. I believe our Floor and ceiling are higher then last year's team as well.

Lol, What? Are you using raw reb/game?

No one is doing 1 for 1 trades on defense and rebounding. We’re talking net, collectively it’s worse.

The modest gains of Holmes over Hunter and Williams over Gabe in rebounding percentage, assuming no drop offs to the Big 12, is immaterial compared to the difference between AJG and IB. All the others are fairly similar, IB is the only elite one

Just curious why everyone is so high on Ricky Council. I mean he averaged 12 point a game and shot 30 percent from 3. Not saying he is a bad add but it's not like we are getting a Barn burner. Just curious.

Advanced stats LovE him, super long wing, 34% career 3 point shooter, very bouncy. Can guard 1-4 easily. A wing who can shoot is the biggest hole on the team

No reb per 100, and reb%. Gabe didn't rebound, so pretty easy upgrade there, and Hunter was 6'0 pg who was never going to be asked to hit the boards. Expand more, you have Ward who gives us much better rebounding than Conditt.

Plus hopefully with another post transfer, I'm not worried about replacing a single stud rebounder in Brockington.
