2022 Recruiting/Transfer Class

I'd assume that's a pretty good thing at least if it stretched that long
only thing you wonder about w/Bates is his injury history.... shoulder surgery as a senior in HS. redshirted freshmen year...injured. Injured and missed most of this past season and I believe had shoulder surgery again. Was thinking we had a player a while back that had constant shoulder injuries but can't remember who.

Tyrus Mcgee had shoulder surgery before getting to isu. I think it was a lingering issue while here too but I could be mistaken or maybe it was a hand injury

I'm talking about the Wisconsin game. That was the post I quoted. So yes I loved his offensive play that game.
Memphis, at KU, and Texas at home were nice games also. Hope he watches films this off-season and notices he has a good midrange shot. Quit taking so many 3's and for God's sake no more lay ups.

True but also that’s how Iowa State has to operate. We have to take guys with upside that could kill it or flame out. Grade risks, injury risks. We can get lucky on some and flame out on others.

We didn't utilize conditt very well. He can be an offensive weapon but he didn't let him shoot or post up, merely jut used him at the top of the key to hold the ball, hand the ball off and pass the ball.
Couldn't be more true. We kept him out of the lane to open up "driving lanes", although we seldom drove the basket.

A shooting guard that can't shoot 3Ps, can't handle well, can't drive, with their strength being that they're average at tough twos is going to hurt your offense.

Gabe shot only 15 FTs in conference play. 1 dunk. Driving and getting to the hoop may not be something he can do. We were 10th in the conference in FT attempts. And 3rd in 3P attempts. Our posts combined for very few shot attempts, particularly shot attempts near the basket. We didn't want to clog up the lane, but yet we didn't or couldn't drive, and we often ended up playing 2 on 5 on that end.

The Miami game exemplifies the flaws. On the other end, playing two bigs didn't gain us better defense, although apparently Enaruna was unplayable and we lacked a 4th guard that was starter level.

I hope with all this 'upgrade over Gabe' talk, he proves everyone wrong. I get the concerns, we all saw it with our own eyes. Yet, I can't get the Wisconsin performance out of my visual either. Would be so cool if he could 'be that guy' a majority of the season. And w/a much deeper roster, especially of defenders, (and hopefully a shooter like Green) he could get more spot bench rest and also not feel a huge load on his shoulders to make a play.

uh....why is my exact post from yesterday showing up again? You just wanted to repeat it?

Jakolby Long and Darrell Bowie had shoulder problems IIRC.

I still think he forced the scoring role a bit for lack of other options. If we have a couple extra weapons to help take that load, I think he'll be much more efficient.

He was similar when 5th in usage at MN the previous season. He actually took more 3P per game that year, shooting 25% rather than the 24% this season.

But reducing his role will be good. You can much more easily overcome your 5th guy struggling than your 3rd usage and top 3PA guy

However, what lineup do we have that facilitates that?

Williams, AJG, Gabe, Kunc, Ward likely means similar or greater need for Gabe scoring. AJG may be at IBs load level, but Williams being Hunter’s volume questionable. I don’t see Ward having Conditt’s assist rate.

With AJG, Holmes, Gabe, Kunc, Ward you may be similar to last year for Gabe, but not a reduction. Holmes will need to regain his shot.

We need Basile so that we have another scoring option Imo. Then AJG, Holmes, Basile would be 1st-3rd options when Gabe is on the floor. Will Watson be ready to play some 4, then moving Kunc to the to reduce the need for Gabe to shoot? When King is back, I'd hope some load is shifted to him, assuming he can be a guy you run offense through.

Just a generic opinion : The number #1 reason we won last year was effort and by-in to TJ’s plan.
If we were to get AJG and Basile (If ), and if we get the effort and bye-in, we will be better than last year. Several major “ifs” in that statement.

I think it was as simple as being guarded by someone who he knew he could take to the rim.

I'm assuming the buy-in and effort will be equal.

It's relative. We were 7-11 in conference play last year with good buy-in and effort. Let's assume buy-in and effort match a year ago- then the question becomes one of talent. How does the roster talent with respect to last year compare, and what does that do to odds of bettering that 7-11 record?

I don’t think you can assume equal buy-in and effort, there are just too many factors. Last year’s team was also 7-2 (including post-season) in games decided by 5 or fewer points, which is probably not sustainable. They over-achieved mightily, I enjoyed every second of it, and they should be celebrated for it, but it’s probably fair to temper expectations for year two, as well.
