12/15/2008-Official Head Coaching Search Thread

I'm not sure there are any BCS conference schools left with openings. Anybody else know?

There are currently no other BCS school openings. We are the best open job left in the country. I cannot get over the fact that Gill is still available after all of these job openings. The fact that ISU has a shot at him is a miracle.

What about Tommy Bowden? I do like Skip Holtz. He was being recruited to Syracuse but he turned it down.

I heard that Pollard is doing the honorable thing and will grant those guys wanting to transfer full releases. He's a bigger man than I. I would condition the release on no Auburn or other Big 12 schools. However, he also implored the team to not make any decisions until a new coach was hired.

Wow! That's a huge risk! (Although I suppose he'd rather have the unhappy players gone instead of infecting the ones who stay) I really, really hope the players will hang around until the next guys is on board before deciding.

Iowa State is the closest Gill is going to get to Nebraska unless Pellini starts looking like Callihan, but so far, that's not likely to happen. I think he turned down Auburn because the atmosphere wasn't right for him, he is an outsider, and they tend to come down harder and quicker on those who don't have a southern pedigree. If he wants to make a statement to Nebbie that they chose the wrong guy, this job is definitely it.

How about Terry Bowden? I know a lot of his succes at Auburn can be attributed to great assistants (Jimbo Fisher for one), but I think the guy knows his stuff. He got a pretty raw deal at AU, mostly because he wouldn't get on the Bobby Lowder gravy train when he was there.

Any chance he would come north? Has been out of the game too long? Can he recruit to a place like Ames, IA?

They still can't transfer to Big XII schools... and would any of them WANT to go to Auburn?

Can you provide the link that says he turned down Auburn? That's one I'd like to see.

Some of these guys may have already been hired elsewhere, but I don't think so.

Larry Coker
Tommy Bowden
Terry Bowden
Lloyd Carr
Bill Snyder
Dennis Francionie
Lan Kiffin
Ty Willingham
Phil Fulmer

This is obviously a moot point now, but could we have gotten Lane Kiffin if the Tennessee job hadn't been open? Just wondering, that could have been cool.

I have to think that JP will dig up some old Big 10/Wisconsin ties that we haven't discussed here yet.

How abaout Chuck Long? That was a jole

Long was about to get fired at Oklahoma as an OC before he lucked into the SDSU job that he butchered... NO WAY...

and Dennis Francionie? That guy did the same thing Chizik did at just about every school he has been to...

I don't know that for sure, but he was listed as one of the candidates numerous times. If he didn't interview, I'd say it was because he didn't want the job, because I'm sure he was ahead of Chizik on their wish list.

They didn't offer it to him. The good ol' boy network at Auburn wouldn't accept him for a number of reasons. Sad really, but it still happens...

If the big donors' portfolios aren't decimated they may pony up some cash for a Turner Gill. We have a 750k head start.
