12/15/2008-Official Head Coaching Search Thread

Funny, that was my impression of GC when he first arrived Ames 2 short years ago...

While I would LOVE to see Gill come to ISU, I really don't think it will happen. (Esp. considering he knows about Cyclone football from first-hand experience and how tough it is to compete in the Big XII with ISU's resources and the state's lack of recruitable kids)

Perhaps Gill belives in himself.

If he can turn around Buffalo....why not ISU?

My wish list:
Turner Gill-I don't care if he's not interested
Turner Gill
Turner Gill
Turner Gill
Patterson TCU
Sylvester Croom
Mark Farley-I know it won't happen and people would scream but I think an objective case can be made that he would be a good choice. i.e. Midwest guy, superior coach to TA, good motivator, could he recruit Big 12 talent???
Dan McCarney-again I know it won't happen but....I find it hard to beleive that he hasn't benfited from coaching at USF and florida the last two seasons...Loney as OC Elliiot as DC...put some adults in charge of this program again...

Just random thoughts.... fire away

Most of us thought early in the search last time, when Gene's name was brought up, there was no way he would come here. People were actually heckled for bringing up his name as a possibility.

So, I won't rule anyone out. I think of the names people think we could get, Tubberville is the most unlikely - simply because the guy will get far more money for not coaching than he would anywhere.

I don't know who the "right" guy is and won't pretend to. There are a few names I like and some I think would be horrid ideas. But I thought Gene would be great for us - and look how that turned out.

I think getting hung up on one guy (many seem completely stuck on Turner) is a really bad idea. Setting yourself up for a major letdown should Gill not come here or not even be a candidate.

Good point. Also, the fact that the numbers 5 and 19 are plastered all over every major sports media outlet in the nation and Puerto Rico don't necessary help our reputation with coaches or players. More national press for ISU of the not-so-good variety.

Pollard luring Gill to Ames would be a minor miracle. I do not think it will happen.

I have a feeling he's going to end up getting someone lesser known. ISU has got to be a tough sell at this point to any higher profile coach.

Gill makes $190,000 at Buffalo. Offer him $1 million and he would be hard pressed not to take the job.

My wish list
Turner Gill
Charlie Strong
Skip Holtz

kinda unrelated but related, anyone know where Brian Shottenheimer is coaching? He came to Florida to play just to learn from Spurrier and was basically a player/coach. Some of the coaches there thought he would be a fast riser in the profession...

I think when Gill gets to Ames and sees our facilities and meets some of the staff and players (and finds out he can triple his salary), I think we should have a good shot to get him. NU had their chance to hire him and passed, so imo if Jamie goes after him hard, we have a good chance to get him. We have a lot to sell at ISU with the good facilities and great fan support. The big 12 North is not tough and 2 out of 4 years we do not have to play a powerhouse. A good coaching staff can win here, I have no doubt about that.

Post of the day right here! I couldn't agree any more with what you said. People are already writing Gill off the list. I think that is a big mistake. I think once he gets on campus and Pollard gives him the ISU pitch, Gill will definitely think long and hard about becoming Iowa State's next head coach!!!

Yeah, that's right? Where did he end up? People talked him up in a big way.

The good thing about Gill is he knows where the endzones are at Jack Trice. He was in them enough when he played here.

Not to mention he could stick it to Nebraska every year for passing on him.

The guy hasn't been anywhere very long at all, but he's continued to rise quickly as well. Not a bad idea...

Like I said, when he was a player at Florida, all the coaches said he had 'it' and would be a great coach. He has been on a pretty steady escalator with some college experience and midwest ties...

I'm officially firing up the Brian Shottenheimer bandwagon!

I saw on the channel 5 news last night that Pollard addressed the team yesterday. Anyone hear anything about what was said or how the meeting went? Hopefully he was able to convince them to hold off making any decisions regarding their football career until a new coach was in place.

I heard that Pollard is doing the honorable thing and will grant those guys wanting to transfer full releases. He's a bigger man than I. I would condition the release on no Auburn or other Big 12 schools. However, he also implored the team to not make any decisions until a new coach was hired.
