Tough day for EIU hoops hopes

The funny thing with Iowa basketball is that this should have happened like 6 years ago but Fran got bailed out by Garza and two legacy players nobody else even offered. This roster is no different than what Fran has had over his stretch at Iowa, he just doesn't have that volume scorer. His rosters were always flawed but they play in a weak conference filled with easy wins.

The sad thing for Iowa is, IMO, Tony Perkins is giving Fran the best guard play they have had in years. And they are still an NIT caliber team.

Iowa should feel good about their prospects to turn around the fan apathy. The below should be inspiration for them.

Detroit Mercy picked up its first win of the college basketball season on Wednesday in a 81–66 win over IUPUI, improving to 1-26 on the year. The victory ends a 27-game losing streak, including 26 consecutive defeats during the 2023-24 season, and saw one fan overcome with joy.

After the final buzzer sounded on the Titans’ victory, one fan could be seen storming the court all by his lonesome.

Iowa is officially in win out to get a sniff of the bubble territory

They need 5-1 and 1 or 2 in the BTT. 5 of their 6 remaining games are Quad 1. A blessing to still have a chance but more likely they'll go like 3-3 and fight to hold on to their NIT bid.

Iowa actually has the 6th most difficult remaining SOS in the country.

Hopefully they beat Wisconsin and Illinois at home to help us out.

The future coach is already sitting on the bench. Hawkeye legend Matt Gatens. He led them to so many wins in his 4 years and championships. No other choice.
I’d forgotten about him but this was actually the narrative when he was brought in.

I don't totally blame Iowa or Big 10 fans from being completely delusional about the Big 10 since the media and committee props them up year after year before reality ***** slaps them every March.

There's zero arguably about it. Big 12 has been the best league EVERY year for the past decade. Not on average over the course of 10 years, literally every single year for almost a decade per KenPom. Literally no one outside of the BTN would argue the Big 10 has been close to the toughest conference the past 10 years. No one.
The BTN has contributed to this living in a fantasy world in a huge way. BTN announcers are huge big 10 homers and they only talk about big 10 teams. It is kind of like only listening to your hand picked follows on social media. You are only going to hear what you want to hear.

Social scientists have already developed a jargony term for this effect --

"Bespoke realities."

Plenty of ways to avoid information that doesn't comport with your preexisting worldview nowadays.

It's usually used in a political context but works just as well for college sports.

At this stage in the season, them hypothetically picking up two wins out of a 30-game schedule isn't going to move their NET much at all. And, then you are talking about their 2/30th of a season impacting 1/30th of our season. Beyond that, what exactly do we need help with/for?

The only thing I could see is if we are competing with Illinois and Wisconsin for tournament locations and seeding. The Iowa win itself is meaningless regardless if it's a quad 2 or 3.
