We Will or CGC?

Federal mainly. I’ve already received letters for feedback from 4 senators including Senator Tommy Tuberville. Better to be compliant now than get in trouble with them down the road.

Please send Senator Tuberville a link to that time Tech tried an onside kick and they totally botched it and one of our guys ran it back for a touchdown with an "LOL!" appended to it.

That'll get his attention.

You know, this one...

How can the government tell private donors who they can and can't donate to?

I would imagine it wouldn't be so much who you can donate to but what that collective spends. More of if you spend $1M on men's sports you also need to spend $1M on women's. So you can donate all you want but it is just going to sit in the bank.

Right now we are not going to be winning any recruiting battles if NIL is the #1 factor. We are using it strategically with retention first and once we get enough resources exploring elsewhere as we can. Ideally we will get to a point where we have a base NIL package for every Football, Mens and Women’s basketball player. Thus our goal to get to $2M. We have a ways to get there.
Just want to say I appreciate what you do. Greatly! You are the right guy for the job. At much lower levels than you I tried to raise money for ISU for 15 or so years. I know how hard your job is. People need to get over not liking the current state of things with NIL - it’s reality. You play or you go home. I contribute and try to help however I can. Your approach reflects the reality of ISU, focus on select retention. I hope we can get to the $2M. That is way below every other team in the conference as I understand it. But, aggressive for us. Let us know how we can help - some will respond.

Thank you! I love what I get to do every day to help Iowa State in this unique way. I believe there is a path forward for us. It is just going to take a team effort to get there. Even including WWC as your Amazon Smile non profit helps in some way. And that’s “free”.

The wrestling RTC shows how this should be. Looking at their donation tree, they have like a half million raised for that. That is a sport that draws crowds of 3000 people. We mention 3 sports here that draw crowds way in excess of that, but wrestling has been doing this longer and has cultivated them longer. We need to find a way to get the 3 main sports donors to become like the wrestling donors.

Parts of the RTC success, in my thoughts.
They have no “background noise” - seating, buildings in wrestling which require large investment from fans. Tremendous die hard fans!! For years!!! Smaller group dynamics with its highs and lows versus major sports with “what do I get in return”.
Football is a $$ destination event.

Sorry rambling.

Some of it also is, I can buy a wrestling season ticket for $100. I buy 4 football season tickets, those alone are 2400, throw in parking and it's 2500, and that is without any donation. If I buy 4 wrestling tickets, its 400. Used to be if you donate at the right amount, you get passes to wrestling included with your donation. Most will donate for football or MBB. It's easier to ask a wrestling fan for $500 donation to help a wrestler when they spent 400 for tickets and parking than it is for the 2500 spent for football.

I was under the impression that if a donee makes a restricted contribution to any not for profit that not for profit has to abide by the restriction. It doesn't matter if the not for profit wants to or not.

Don't the restrictions need to be for legitimate programs or projects of the nonprofit's service? For instance, I don't think I can donate money to the university and designate it for my neighbor's enrolled child's tuition and get a tax deduction. Can I?

I wish that the AD could just tack some amount of dollars onto tickets for NIL. It would make the donation a lot easier to stomach if it was just part of the ticket price.

You can get a tax deduction for anything you want ;)

My wife sees some pretty specific contribution restrictions coming in for Girl Scouts. For example a donations restricted to help lower summer camp fees or make them free.

And I'll use Living History Farms as an example because when I used to do their annual audit I saw some really specific restrictions for contributions they received.

If I had to guess, they could expand the title 9 or other applicable laws to include non-profits with the goal to donate to student athletes NIL activities. So all these collectives that are set up because of NIL, could then fall under title 9 laws and thus, need to provide equal opportunity to men and women's sports.

Something like this could direct NIL more to it's original intent, which was the freedom for athletes to earn money off their NIL. For bigger collectives, a lot of those donors would provably shift a decent chunk of their money away from the collective directly to the athletes they want in the sports they want. Thus, getting around, purely on my speculation, potential title 9 laws on collectives.

Very few people care about women's sports (sorry, it's just true). I doubt the majority of people want their money going there. More loopholes will be found and utilized if that's the case.

What’s the difference other than you pick the donation?

Competent special teams play that seems like a long time ago.

Against the rules. University has nothing to do with NIL ( theoretically)
You would have to redistribute $, and that gets real tricky.

Also, not everyone likes NIL and mandating that people donate to NIL could cause issues.

I personally don’t really like NIL and don’t want to contribute to it. If Wisconsin (who I have my season tickets with) required an NIL donation with tickets, I’d reduce my donation to the AD’s office by the same amount.

And thinking about it, even if you don’t mind NIL, including it as part of tickets would lead to decreased money to the AD’s office
