USC Coaching Search - Riley

I will refrain from casting stones until Jamie reassures us we do not live in a glass house by announcing a contract extension for CMC and big fat raises for our Asst coaches.

if CMC leaves it won’t be partly because Jame went against him to trigger a massive round of conference realignment.

Actually hiring Lincoln Riley is a brilliant move. You raise the profile of USC and the Pac 12 with this hire. It is a shot at the SEC that USC and the PAC 12 will respond and not surrender. Exactly the response needed to fight the SEC and ESPN power grab.

USC has plenty of money. They have immediately made themselves a National Championship possibility. Lincoln Riley will sign a fantastic class for USC. Take the money. And screw OU who took the money and sold everyone out. Love It.

Plus I don't think they eat a lot of brisket in SoCal, so he's off the hook with that too.

So that they can save a few bucks, I think I might go on OU's board and offer them my "Traitor" sign. They can just add "Riley" to the bottom.

I guess I'm not convinced Riley is even that great of coach. Seems they've underperformed relative to expectations the last few years.

Expectations of a National Championship or at least the CFP every year.

Wonder what Sooner Fans expect next year? They will become like Husker Fans. Saying WTF happened to us. The SEC was supposed to be the Promised Land.

I agree, this looks a lot worse publicity wise than actual football wise. I don't doubt for a second that they can get another coach in there that gives them the same results on the field, just maybe not the several Heismans.

They have been a much softer OU than under stoops.

Not to mention, he inherited Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray, then got Jalen Hurts. His HS qb recruits were a lot of hype but not up to the level OU was used to. Some major flaws in the "qb guru" narrative when you look deeper. The thing is, the LA media won't look that deep. Guys like Cowherd are NFL guys, they are obsessed with QBs. Even with those great QB's, Riley didn't do what USC will expect him to do. That job just became one of, if not the, highest pressure jobs in the country.

I agree.

If the rumors are true that LR did not like OU moving to the SEC move, one also has to wonder if there was a bit of "mutuality" in this saga. It would certainly be preferable for the OU AD to have the head FB coach being "all in" on the move.

Like any coaching change there are short term recruiting issues, but with a good, quick hire that can shore up pretty quickly.

Long-term recruiting should be just fine for OU. They are in the biggest brand conference and will still be able to recruit the hell out of Texas given the two big Texas brands are in the same league.

Given the divisions and at least current scheduling by the SEC, OUs going to win plenty of games. OUs problem is going to be that they are most likely going to end up in a division with a few programs that are as good or better, and overall in the SEC there are several programs as good or better.

People talk about Nebraska losing recruiting regions, but it simply hasn't been a problem. Their footprint has changed, but talent coming in hasn't. Until this coming class they have recruited as well or better than they did in the Pelini days. Their schedule hasn't gotten more difficult, in fact they got dropped into the division that has been the worst or second-to-worst in power conference football since its inception. Their cross-overs have done them no favors, but it's not like they are losing the west by one or two games, so it's not really a factor.

Nebraska dropped from the Osbourne days because all of their advantages are gone from that time - being the only one in the league always on TV, hoarding players when scholarship limits were much higher, way better facilities, and accepting partial qualifiers.

Nebraska dropped from the Pelini days because Riley and Frost aren't as good as coaches as Pelini. That's it.
Nebraska was on borrowed time regardless of conference, if not that being the reason to move to the BIG. The increased exposure and pay to offset the fact they’d lost all those advantages.

But how does their budget and recruiting the in Big10 compared to what it would in the Big 12?

For OU, they may not see a drop off in recruiting and will make more, but their ranking in conference will likely drop. A culture of having the most can struggle when faced with no longer having that advantage imo

Things like NLI may help preserve NU. Few places will pay for NLI like Husker fans
