12/15/2008-Official Head Coaching Search Thread

Willingham took one of the highest preasure jobs in NCAA football, recuited some good players, Brady Quinn, Darius Walker, Ryan Grant, to name a few, then was canned for no reason. Then Weis took Willinghams recruits to two straight BCS bowls. Now thats what I call running into a telaphone pole!

die! die now! :skeptical:

We really need a bright, young, energetic mind that is looking for a challenge and the confidence to know that they can get the job done.

IMO - Turner Gill would be an incredible hire. I think he brings the fire and drive that would enable a school that many think cannot compete to a higher level. That to me was what i saw in Chizik, the desire to do what many did not think was possible - win at Iowa State. From what i've read, its highly unlikely that Gill is going to take this job, and he will remain at Buffalo and wait for a better job opening next year.

Skip Holtz - no way he leaves ECU - he's gettin paid over there. He just signed an extension that sees him making nearly 2 million a year through 2013. Sorry, he's making as much as Chizik will make at Auburn and not face nearly as tough of a schedule. If we were able to bring him in, his credentials are noteworthy, just not sure of the name appeal that would lure in the talent to compete in the Big 12.

Chris Petersen - i would love to see this guy become the head coach. If we don't get gill, this guy would be a dream hire. Like Gill, he's an offensive minded coach that has a lot of appeal to players. Young, energetic, and his offensive creativity would be appealing to all our young stars and commits. Realistically, why would you leave Boise State for Iowa State? He's got a chance to continue to go to BCS bowls and he will get paid by someone soon to coach at a bigger school then ISU. My guess, he would be a good hire for Norte Dame next year.

One other name to throw out there Bobby Hauck at Montana. This guy is a winner. Here's the inside on him that makes him very interesting. When he was at Washington, he was widely recognized as one of the best recruiters in the nation. He has ties and knows how to sell. And he obviously knows how to coach looking at Montana's record since he took over. Kind of an outside the box choice, but, would be very interesting hire. But, he is a native of Montana and may be content right where hes at.

Lastly Brian Kelly. Again, offensive mind and definitely had interest in ISU before he took Cinci job. He may not want to leave Cincy because its in a weak conference he knows he can dominate and reap the success for that with good bowls and a bigger job down the road. However, he may also recognize that ISU has more young talent in a conference thats right for the success of ISU. If you look at it, only Kansas will be bringing back a reliable QB in Reesing. Looking at the other North teams, ISU may have the best QB returning. ISU could be in line for a quick turnaround based upon young talent coming through the system and downward turns of our North opponents while they retool with young talent.

While were at it - lets get really creative with it....

If we were able to hire Gill, i would love for him to hire Erik Campbell of Iowa away as the OC/wide receivers coach. This guy is a recruiting machine and has landed some of the top prospects in the nation when he was at Michigan and at Iowa. Would be a great hire and a step up for him to learn the OC position from Gill.

Kevin Sumlin at Houston

1) He knows both sides of the football plus special teams. He has served in every capacity on both sides of the ball and has been successful. Everywhere he goes, his teams win

2) Would be a great minority hire for the Big 12 and ISU. However, I question Pollard in this area.

3) He can recruit. Has recruiting ties in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana which are hot beds for talent

4) He has a great staff at Houston including Skladany (don't care what you say, I liked him at ISU)

5) We could up his salary from 600 k to over 1 million.

Let's see - the guy went 10-3 in 2002, 5-7 in 2003, and 6-5 in 2004. Yep - his record was COMPLETELY acceptable in South Bend

In the eyes of the folks at Notre Dame, he took a pretty good program and drove it straight into the ground.

he coaches for the hawks. no more hawkeyes!:skeptical:

no more coordinators either! I know some of you like the OU ones, but I really think we need someone who knows what head coaching is, which is much different than being a coordinator.

Chizik was a great coordinator, but head coaching is a totally different job....focus on whole team, managing coaches - not players, etc.

THRILLED TO GET:

Turner Gill- Buffalo
Chris Peterson- Boise St
Tommie Tuberville- ex-Auburn

EXCITED TO GET:

Skip Holtz- East Carolina
Todd Graham- Tulsa
Bill Cubit- Western Michigan

HAPPY IF WE GET:

Steve Loney- ex-ISU

Pride, that is a GREAT list. I would move Holtz to the thrill category, but I am about in the same boat as you.

Question for everyone - Is Brian Kelly completely out of reach this time around?

How about Terry Bowden? I know a lot of his succes at Auburn can be attributed to great assistants (Jimbo Fisher for one), but I think the guy knows his stuff. He got a pretty raw deal at AU, mostly because he wouldn't get on the Bobby Lowder gravy train when he was there.

Any chance he would come north? Has been out of the game too long? Can he recruit to a place like Ames, IA?

What you say may have some truth to it but one of the jobs of the HC is hiring a quality staff (something Chizik did not do). All of the Bowden boys (Bobby, Terry, and Tommy) have a strong history of being able to do this. Tommy gave Rich Rodriguez the OC slot at Tulane and they went 12-0 one year. One other thing...say what you want but the Bowden boys are all "good guys".

A quick question because I do not know...is there a guy in the FCS division that has a long track record of success with some sort of midwestern/Iowa ties? I am thinking of our version of a Jim Tressel. Just a thought.

I think Gill, Bowden, Willingham would all be great fits. They are proven guys with something to prove. I like Charlie Strong at Florida but I'm not sure I want us to give another coach the keys to our car without any driver's education like we did with the last guy.

That is wild. Hes like 63 years old. What about that says 'long term solution'?

Will never happen with Carr. However, we don't need a long-term solution. We need someone to win - period.

If that person leaves, then we go get someone else that is even better. I said the same thing in response to the "Gene is not long term" worries too.

Only thing I didn't expect is he'd leave without winning.

Well, wait - he did win. 5 times out of 24. Thanks, numbnuts.

Not being here long because you move up it one thing. Already being retired when you get here is another. Nobody over 55 please.

Every Monday morning Ditka is on with Mike & Mike. I was surprised they didn't ask him about his candidacy for the ISU job today. I guess JP probably knows Ditka goes on their show and asked them to keep it quiet. :jimlad:

Just in case the pirate wasn't enough for anyone, I need to stress that I am just kidding around and having fun with this Ditka thing. Seriously though, I heard Ditka has a playbook that he has been working on for years that is dedicated solely to the ISU/Iowa game. He keeps it under his pillow and it's the first thing he does every morning when he wakes up. :jimlad:

Isn't it a good thing that someone who couldn't win is leaving on his own accord rather than us having to fire him?
