Devin Williams - WVU to the NBA

The NBA rule is making college basketball but a shadow of its once glorious self, when Bird and Magic ruled the airwaves. Now, we're left to a bunch of journeymen plus one&doners just past their high school prom. Really sad, what's become of college hoops, relegated to TNT, which is ironic in some ways, since that's where the NBA plays and no one watches them either.

Yeah, let's go back to the good ole days in the 80s when you'd be lucky to be able to get more than 3 or 4 games of your favorite team on TV per year.

Ever consider the fact that a lot of college basketball players with professional potential also come from poor families? Damn all you kids, you're ruining some old kansas state ****'s enjoyment with your greed and desire to earn money!

The reason they leave has zero to do with my point that the game is not what it once was when guys played out the string in college. Reality is that kids could have joined the league right of high school dating back to the 70's.

The best 'team' I ever saw play was Indiana, vintage '74-'76. They lost one game over two years and would have won back-to-back national titles had not Scott May broken his arm prior to the '75 tournament. All were upperclassmen.

In your point you used Magic Johnson as an example of the "good old days". Magic left after his sophomore year. Please explain.

Surly, you were first called out on this because you made an assertion that this was all because of some NBA rule. I assume you are referring to the rule that says players aren't eligible to play in the NBA until they are one year removed from high school. That rule came about because players were jumping into the draft directly from HS. The rule didn't cause the change. It tried to stem the tide of younger players - many of them not ready - trying to get into the NBA.

This is what I wrote. The fact the NBA doesn't change it's rule is at the expense of the college game. Simple fact. If it moved to the baseball rule, the college game would flourish.

Not good for the college game. It might make us feel warm and cozy when it happens to other guy. But this is a reflection of what's wrong with college basketball today, and why people don't watch. Williams was a second team all league selection. He should have played at least next year and probably four.

Best team I ever saw was '76 Indiana's undefeated outfit. Mostly juniors and seniors - Quinn Buckner, Bobby Wilkerson, Scott May, Tom Abernathy, Kent Benson. Coach Knight's first national champions. We'll never see 'teams' like that again unless the NBA stops this nonsense. Really sad for college hoops.

Right, I don't think anyone will argue that college basketball today is not what it used to be, but the one and done rule is definitely not the cause of that.

Yeah and the one and done rule isn't the reason college basketball has declined, players started leaving early and earlier from the '93-95 range and on. This was happening well before the one and done rule came into effect in 2008 or whenever.

This is the quote where you blamed it on the NBA rule.

Kids had the option of leaving early dating back to the '70's.

So what NBA rule are you talking about?

Presently, the NBA requires kids to be one year out of high school. The college game would be greatly enhanced if the NBA followed MLB with a three year rule for college players.

The academic ethics of giving a kid a college scholarship and having him on campus for 9 months is appalling. Do you really think they go to "school"?

Yeah that wasn't what caused the college game to go downhill, it was already that way before the rule even existed. I don't know when you think they put that rule in.

Yeah and there were tons of guys leaving early before the rule, so what the **** is your point?

Read above thread (baseball rule) and stop cursing. It adds nothing to your lack of argument. BTW, the 2005 UNC national champions started mostly juniors. Felton, May and McCants were the stars.
