COACHING SEARCH: Thanksgiving night update

A guy like PJ Fleck will be hired at some P5 school and be a huge success...the guy can recruit like no other. At a P5 school what u get is much better assistants who know how to coach and the X and O's. We could do far far worse than Fleck. Wwe have those new white helmets instantly and one cool game day atmosphere that's for sure. As for the "He pulled those poor kids scholly offers!! Gasp! So let me ask everyone this..if PJ is hired and he decides to pull half our current offers in exchange for better 3-4 star recruits are any of you going to be ******? If we hired Nick Saban next week u think any of our current commits would be coming here? Hell no. And I'd be willing to be all those players found a spot to land.

As for our next HC...I really dont know what to think anymore. There are guys who I think would be great and others I'm just not sure. And I don't think Navy Ken would just come in and go full triple option. Maybe he would implement the option as part of our offense but maybe create a hybrid option offense from the shotgun? KN seems like a very smart football mind.

It comes down to the same thing for me...who can come to ISU and consistently bring better talent.

Beyer - I totally agree.

I think the greater challenge the next coach will face is bringing in better talent, because for the most part ALL of the candidates have shown they can coach football in one way or another.

Getting talent is the key in my opinion. Get that, and coaching them becomes easier. Bring in a great X and O guy who gets FCS talent won't cut it in the B12. It just won't. That is a non starter for me.

"If Pollard is going to (insert here), Leath should fire him now" is my favorite meme on CF since "Let me Mayor coach."

Troy Calhoun would be a great option if ISU is willing to go to a pure running attack.

People have to remember that Calhoun was an Offensive Coordinator for the Houston Texans, ran a West Coast offense. He's only running that type of offense at AFA because of their talent pool. I believe you would see a different offensive package at ISU.

I think your missin it. Its not that he pulled the offers its when he pulled the offers. 2 weeks before signing day thats an integrity issue to me and i dont want him here. How many times are we bashing kids for commiting to us then changing their minds but you want to gloss over a coach who basically did worse. Im sorry cant overlook that.
I think he was going with the approach of getting the right players for his system and not the former guy's system. Might not be great for the kids, but he didn't hinder his program for four years with players who don't fit a system.

We won't know if we don't try. Tired of the ISU defeatist attitude. If Pollard doesn't try he should be fired. We did it with Johnny many years ago. I wonder if we would have got Johnny if people had this attitude back then.

Basketball is completely different from football. A good coach can completely overhaul a basketball team in one or maybe two seasons. Building a football program takes a lot more time.

If Pollard is going to throw away the left over turkey instead of making turkey and dressing sandwiches in the Crock Pot, Leath should fire him now.

your ok with it but it if was ur son or daughter and two weeks before possibly the greatest day of there athletic career comes they are told..... welp u know i'm sorry its business no scholarship offer for you here with no time to even find another school.....you be ok with that? Integrity.

Remember when Hoiberg cut Richard Armadi (sp) loose way late so we could sign Kane?

Integrity... right?

If Pollard is going to serve the Apple pie with whipped cream instead of ice cream this year, Leath should just fire him now.

That's what happens with a coaching change. Every current ISU recruit is re-evaluating right now. There is no guarantee that their commitments will be honored. And if they flipped right now, I couldn't blame them. It is a two-way street.

When the new coach comes in, he has to have the ability to run the program this way. I think a guy like Fleck, who clearly upgraded the talent level at WMU, shouldn't be stuck with a class of commits that was not what he wanted.

So basically, this:

I think he was going with the approach of getting the right players for his system and not the former guy's system. Might not be great for the kids, but he didn't hinder his program for four years with players who don't fit a system.

A good coach can win and mold players from a previous regime to fit system...Paul did it and went 7-6 his first year its not impossible and u dont have to shatter kids dreams at last minute to do it.

I was kinda liking Carey early on but then I saw his team lose to Ohio and they looked bad and Ohio was certainly not impressive - these are two of the better teams in the MAC. Just made me wonder how in the world we lost to a MAC school...
Same reason we lost on the final minute against KSU, same reason we couldn't move the ball in the 2nd half against Iowa, same reason we couldn't hang on against OSU. Same reason we got completely blown out against TTU.

Again ur missin it. He didnt allow a two way street. two weeks before signing day does not give kids a chance to "flip" or change their minds. If it was the time table that we have now then your right i would be ok with it because it allows kids to find another school but not two weeks before signing day.

Remember when Hoiberg cut Richard Armadi (sp) loose way late so we could sign Kane?

Integrity... right?

one player versus 23 go figure? Integrity and i doubt way late was two weeks before siging day but hey we agree to disagree i just feel like he has some major red flags and is not a ISU guy.

Give me an example in the last 5-10 years of a school of ISU's stature poaching a program's head coach with the type of success of Fedora and Shaw. I'd be incredibly impressed if you could.

That's not the point I'm trying to make. If these are the actual list of candidates then it really says something about Pollard. If you listen to Pollard press conference, he makes it sound like he is willing to pay 3 million to get a coach. I'm not saying that's what he will spend but that's what he makes it sound like. I just hope that this is all a smoke screen and there are other coaches we are talking to. Not saying that a few of these wouldn't make good coaches but at this point we can't take chances any more.

No doubt the new coach will have to do just what you say to a certain extent. BUT, i'd personally rather have a guy who knows what he needs to win... even if it means breaking some eggs initially to make it happen. Otherwise we should have just kept Rhoads.

Did you have a problem with Hoiberg?

Even Fred showed this to be true.

I feel like this is a poor example. Fred left ISU for an NBA head coaching position. He did not leave for another NCAA HC spot. He proved that he could win at the NCAA level and an opportunity came open at the next level. How many of us would not jump at something like that in our own jobs?

Fleck would be great, the key is a strong staff to compliment his recruiting and motivation. Young players like young coaches they can better relate to.

The fact that many of you don't like Fleck's personality/recruiting, tells me he is perfect for ISU. This isn't about being best friends who go to bible study together on Wednesday night. This is about ******* wins at any cost.
