Crash of Oklahoma State team before our game with them. Terrible tragedy.

Not sure whether we acknowledged Hiawatha Rutland before our NDSU game last year. That was an accidental drowning.

IMO, this is not a member of our Cyclone Family. This is a Hawkeye. And it appears to be a self inflicted tragedy.....either suicide or a drug overdose. Yes, the circumstances of the loss make a difference. IMO, it is better to not make this a public moment at our stadium. It is best to leave it to the Hawkeye Nation to address their own loss at the appropriate time at their own stadium.

I read Woody's blog. Very well written. We can all express our private sentiments without a public announcement at Jack Trice Stadium on gameday. LIke I said......he is a Hawkeye........it is more appropriate for them to acknowledge their loss at their own stadium.

There's a time for the rivalry, and there's a time to be human. Can't we have both? I say we should honor him at the game.

Did we honor Hiawatha Rutland last year before the NDSU game? What about Jason Berryman before our next home basketball game against Texas? What about Stevie Hicks?

Sash is a former player who is several years removed from playing. He is not a Cyclone....he is a Hawkeye. While I sympathize with the loss, do we now have a precedent for a moment of silence for any and all former players of our rivals at coming games after their death? Not sure if we do that. Not opposed if we did.

But if we did not acknowledge our own Cyclone athletes after their deaths then I do not see how we can acknowledge Sash. And it does appear that Sash's death is either suicide or a drug overdose. And that does make a difference IMO.

this isn't about Oklahoma St. and it doesn't have to be about being a Cyclone. This is about an Iowa kid who grew up not far from many of us, graduated from a state school, won a Superbowl, came back to his home town and was adored by some, like by many, hated by others...and despite all that, was still an Iowan.

We're a classy university. We always have been. There will be others at the game, both Cyclones and Hawks, who knew him, respected him, were related to him...

I get that he wasn't a Cyclone and it's our field. But man, it's respectful, if for no other reason than he was an Iowa kid.

That it might have been a suicide makes it more tragic...especially if some of what Woody alluded to is accurate. And if it wasn't, then what?

Whether we choose to do it or not isn't up to me, but if we choose to, I would support it and would expect the rest of us to as well.

I personally feel that every year, regardless of the host, there should be a quick remembrance of former players from the rivalry that have died in the previous year. You may be right that Sash may not be the best one to start a tradition like that for, but I think it's long overdue.

I think something simple before the game like a brief moment of silence would be enough. It acknowledges the tragedy while at the same time isn't over the top or out of line.

I am not opposed to it. At the same time did we appropriately honor Jason Berryman, Stevie Hicks, Hiawatha Rutland at our next sporting event and if it was at our opponent's arena did they acknowledge them with a moment of silence.

Perhaps the most appropriate place for honoring Tyler Sash would be at the ISU-Iowa Women's Volleyball game this Friday at Carver Hawkeye.

Like I said earlier in this thread, it's so easy to take the high road here, why would you not? Give it a 9 second moment of silence, no one will miss those 9 seconds.

Super. I don't know what appropriately means in this case. I would like to think we honor all of our contributors in some form or fashion. How we do that, I'm not sure. As for another university, I would guess it's up to them and their feelings on whether to honor another player from another team.

The just may honor him at that game. I won't be there...let me know if you decide to go.

I think with the rivalry week and the timing, it is different...among the other things I've already said.

If I'm not mistaken, we've done something for Chris Street in the past at one of our bball games even long after his death??

I know I can't out post you because I work and you will continue forever...so I'll leave it at what's been said.

Chris Street's death was a tragic traffic accident. Whether you like it or not, those circumstances differ. And Chris Street was also an ACTIVE PLAYER......which is different from a FORMER player.

And as I pointed out, Tyler Sash was not a member of OUR Cyclone Family. He did not contribute to Iowa State or to Cyclone Athletics. If we did not honor OUR OWN Cyclone family members who died, then I fail to see how we honor Tyler Sash.

Jackson Vroman, a former Cyclone died this summer in late June. He was not properly honored with a moment of silence.

As tragic as Tyler Sash's death was, if he was an ACTIVE Player, I would say there would be no question of acknowledging him. FORMER Player............and not a Cyclone.......not so sure. IMO, the acknowlegements of people like Rhoads, and other coaches and former Cyclones offering their sympathies is enough. Just not sure it rises to the level of a moment of silence at Jack Trice Stadium for the death o a former player of another team.

At any rate, RIP Tyler Sash. Way too young.

Wow, this thread took an interesting turn. I'm ok if they want to have a moment of silence or offer condolences to the University of Iowa on behalf of the Cyclones.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a moment of silence but I wouldn't be upset if ISU didn't. If the game was at Iowa, surely there would be. It's simply the timing - if this happened during the offseason, no question there would not be a moment of silence. Which is when some of the other deaths in discussion have happened.

I can't believe there are people actually against a moment of silence. Some people take sports, and specifically this rivalry, WAY too seriously. We are all compassionate Iowans who (hopefully) look out for each other.

Accidently, self-inflicated, whatever, this is still a tragedy that impacted the state of Iowa and many Iowans. A moment of silence would be a nice tribute to that.

For me it's almost more important if it's self-inflicted. Those people struggling with things like drug addiction or depression need to know that people understand and sympathize and that they will be missed if they ever leave.
