Another arrest

Hey you actually showed back up. I'm well aware of the dangers of texting. You have a tendency to say things without backing them up. Did you find the Niang links yet?

Niang links? What are you talking about? I think u have me confused. And what things have I said that require hard scientific facts? This is a sports message board right? Where innuendo and hyperbole run rampant.

Some people are on here sounding like idiots while they compare driving under the influence to texting/eating while driving. Just shut up. Drinking and driving is dangerous and everyone knows better. Others on here sound like complete squares that are clearly out of touch with the reality of the world we live in. Newsflash to the squares: most people that drink socially have gotten behind the wheel when they shouldn't have. It doesn't make it right, but saying a 19 year old was stupid is redundant.

The bottom line is that the law is strict and I think it serves as sufficient punishment. Aside from the thousands of dollars in cost, probation, classes, and the fact that this will follow Matt on his record for the next decade, he also has to deal with every stranger he sees knowing his embarrassing predicament. Taking on all of that and more as a 19 year old away from home is going to be difficult for him. Considering he is seemingly a good kid that has done nothing but be a good Cyclone until this slip-up, I think the right thing to do is to let him work through this (and stop scolding him on message boards like a d-bag) and support him so he comes out of it a better Cyclone and a better man.

I think studies have shown that texting is in fact as dangerous as drunk driving. I know if I'm out driving I'm not sure who I'd want to run across worse.... a drunk driver or a texter.... it would be close.

Other than that, I completely agree with everything else.

Wow. So when being concerned or bothered about a student-athlete getting an OWI makes you "square." So if you were Matt Thomas, you'd tell your upset parents "quit being such squares mom and dad." Good god.

I don't think that's the issue here. The guy messed up, and will pay for it in his own way. He'll get hell for this from his family, and will pay for it in his social, academic, and eventually professional life. On top of that, the entire state of Iowa and much of the college basketball world knows as well. I had a similar charge when I was younger, and I paid my dues and learned my lesson right quick. I'm sure he appreciates the concern of the message board brigade, but he doesn't need their judgment in order to realize what he did was wrong.

Good post!

Life if full of making dumb mistakes, learning your lesson, and being able to move on. Matt Thomas will do just that, and I'm sure he will learn a lot. All of us have made mistakes, and luckily enough, we were given the chance to learn from them and move past them.

So all those people saying things like Fred should kick him off the team, or how could he do such a dumb thing, or why aren't people taking drunk driving seriously, just get over yourselves and wake up. Nobody on here is saying that driving drunk is ok or that Matt shouldn't be punished for what he's done. He's going to be punished.

Getting a two game suspension, or a 5 game suspension, or a 10 game suspension is going to be the least of his punishments in this case. He's facing several thousands of dollars alone in legal fees, etc. He's getting publicly humiliated for everyone to see as well. And this will be on his record forever. Basketball aside, this has already been a life changing event in his life.

Actually an OWI is about all you need to know. He's underage.

Being underage, it only takes 2 beers to blow high enough to get an OWI. If that's the case and you're belittling him, you need to get a life and find bigger problems to concern yourself with.

No. Not matter what age you are, it takes .08 to get an OWI. When you under 21, and you blow between .02 and .08, you get a Zero Tolerance. The only similarities of an OWI and a Zero Tolerance are what the DOT does with your license. A Zero Tolerance is not a crime.

I stand corrected

new nickname "Natty Ice" ?

But I thought "Matty Ice" was derived from "Natty Ice"? Maybe we unwittingly set him up for problems with alcohol by giving him a nickname that was a play on words for a beers nickname.

I'm sorry but I just don't buy that texting and driving is more dangerous than drinking and driving.

I pulled up DOT crash info for Polk County, I couldn't find it for statewide easily. in 2011, drug and alcohol impairment caused 49 crashes, 44 injuries (4 fatalities and 5 major injuries). Compare that to distracted drivers, which includes texting and driving as a subset and you have 43 crashes with 16 injuries (0 fatalities and 3 major injuries).

I know a one year review doesn't mean a lot but I've researched this in the past and I believe that trend continues across multiple years.

I also think it's crazy we focus so much on those two areas but everyone is nonchalant about speeding, which, in 2011 caused 466 crashes, 182 injuries (5 fatalities and 13 major injuries).

I guess I'm just in the minority though.

Agree with this. Although it is safe to say that the punishment for drinking and driving compared to the punishment for distracted driving has a far greater difference then the number of crashes/injuries/fatalities caused by drinking and driving and distracted driving. Both are extremely dangerous, easily avoidable and cause roughly the same number of incidents; however, once carries a far greater punishment.

Your example of speeding incidents make this an even greater issue...fines/punishment for speeding is far less then drinking and driving, yet incidents are far greater with speeding.
