Gary Payton II?

Gotta hand it to cw...this is a pretty elaborate hoax to just get people to frequent the site.

Bravo

The part that is even weirder than Gary Payton out of the blue saying his son will play for Iowa State next year is in 3 days no one is flat out denying this.

Thats true. Someone close to him would have heard it and made a correction if he mis-spoke, right?

There might be a simple reason why there is not a straight forward answer to this situation - and might very well not be until August enrollment.

I'm not going to take the time to dig into the current regulations, but I know that at least in the past there was a big advantage to a prospective student athlete (PSA) to be classified as non-recruited if they plan to walk on to an athletic team. If a staff recruits someone to walk on based on their athletic ability, they are almost always prohibited from accepting institutional financial aid to help with their expenses if they see game time.

It doesn't take much to be considered recruited - scouting a game, video tape review, phone calls, even a letter of interest. If someone simply shows up with no prior recruiting contact, they would have more options in terms of receiving financial aid without being counted against the limit for the team's scholarship numbers.

The drawback for the PSA is that they might not be given the opportunity to join the team if they were not invited in advance. This would probably not be an issue with Payton given his background and pedigree.

There could be some implied trust on the part of both sides through unofficial 3rd or 4th hand contacts that doesn't qualify as someone being recruited. It's a unique situation, but one that could lead to Payton joining the team next fall without restrictions on being eligible for financial aid or on being labeled a counter.

For some reason, I don't think that Payton is lacking in the money department....

He can pony up the tuition

Successful people who have a lot of money are usually better at managing it and taking advantage of finding ways to save it. Or they can choose to waste it and possibly soon find themselves lacking in the money department. Why spend it if you don't have to?

Given that no one has confirmed or denied this (as mentioned earlier), I do wonder if there is some situation like this where no one can really comment.

Agreed.

I'm going to pretend that this thread never happened and hope to see The Glove at Hilton in the near future.

I havent read any of the posts on here, but I watched the kids video. I am really impressed. If we can get him as a walk-on it would be awesome. He looks like he makes smart decisions, decent ball handling skills, decent quickness, and finishes strong at the rim. It is hard to teach a kid to take it to the rim and be tough, its much easier to teach them to shoot the ball. From watching him shoot those freethrows, he looks like he has the potential to be a decent shooter. I really want this guy as a walk-on, plus he is a Payton.

Sportstalkmatt on twitter 3 days ago was pretty positive that the rumors were not true. He claimed he had a "solid source"
I really hope it is true, it would be cool to have Gary Payton in the stands and from his highlight video he looked like he would be a pretty good walk on.

His source is Chris Williams and Cyclonefanatic so it doen't mean much more than what you've read here. I don't believe anything until I here it from Marty's dentist.

Yeah I don't really believe him just another perspective to think about.

Ya he had solid sources Rayavonte was going to transfer from Drake as well. He also was pretty sold on the Big 12 dissolving. I don't feel like digging deeper, he gives his opinions as fact and never states sources only that he has them.

The thread about Trey Griffey made me think about this again. Really strange deal that Gary would say what he did on the radio about Iowa State if there was no truth to it.
