Classless Hawk fans....

You'd be wrong. Unless wearing ISU clothes is provoking, then yes.

I have to laugh at this thread because I was going to start something just like it.

I was at the gym the Monday after Sanderson announced he was going to Penn State. I had on a t-shirt I had gotten from the Big 12 b-ball tournament. As I was walking out of the locker room I heard some say "Penn State". I kept walking.

As I was doing my reps on the bench press, I heard someone say "Penn State" again. I never said a word. I was on the leg press and someone walked by and said "Penn State". This time I was able to look up and saw who said it -- and he WAS wearing an Hawkeye t-shirt. This guy was like in his late 30s early 40s

I never said a word each time. I thought it was pretty immature and funny that a grown man would act like a punk 12-year-old.

So the argument can be made that just because he was wearing an Iowa t-shirt doesn't make him an Iowa fan. My answer to that just because I was wearing an ISU t-shirt doesn't make me an Cyclone fan.

Haha a kid from my highschool, last year in Iowa City, started screaming Hawks suck and Cyclones rule up and down the street. Several seconds later, a group of hawk fans, probably 7 to 8, circled him up and poured beer all over him. After they let him go, they started chucking unopened beers at him from afar. Too funny!:biglaugh:

Cyclone fans can be poor fans too. For example - I happened to be in IC in 2005 the weekend of the ISU - Iowa game. After the game I went to a bar with my brothers, decked out head to toe in Cyclone gear. When the bartender told me it took a lot of guts to be there dressed like that, I drunkenly replied "Most of you guys can't read anyway"

That's true. This past year my friends and I stopped to get beer at a gas station at ~7:00 a.m. for the Iowa/ISU tailgate. Some drunken frat boy from ISU tried to pick a fight (kinda, he wanted to go outside to get help from his buddies) with no less than 5 people (of all ages) in the store. I was able to get him to argue stupid sports ****, which was better than listening to him call people in the store "fags", etc. I'm pretty sure he was a Hawk fan though. I could tell. Hawk fans are classless.

So your buddy is just standing around and some guy whacks him with a beer bottle? If this is what really happened I sure hope someone found a cop or something so that charges were pressed. I don't think that is the whole story based on my experiences, but I wasn't there.

Regardless, I have a friend who is an Iowa fan and he breaks beer bottles on his own head at tailgates.

You can live in MN, OR and AZ and find someone that hates USC fans or Florida fans or Nebraska fans or Texas fans or Ohio St fans; you people are dreaming if you think Iowa is disliked more than any of these other teams. My experience in AZ is that Iowa is very well liked and there are a lot of Iowa fans there. My experience in MN is that they are as big of an Iowa rival as ISU is so they obviously don't like Iowa fans for many of the same reasons as ISU. (And Iowa fans took down the Metrodome fg post about 5 yrs ago after beating them).

Nebraska fans are ten times more obnoxious and disliked around the country as are Wisconsin fans. Now those two fan bases have issues.

We've had different experiences then.

From my run-ins with Iowa fans, I say A LOT of them do the same thing.

Unfortunately, people probably laugh at your buddy when he does it right now. They won't be laughing when this guy's walking around like Muhammad Ali -- brain damaged from all those "fun" times breaking bottles over his head.

Fixed it, that's why you had a good experience!

One thing I will say is a little different between the two fan bases is that Iowa fans are pretty brutal to every single opposing fan base that comes into Iowa City. I have been to a few Hawkeye tailgates/games that did not involve ISU, and I will say they are pretty consistent on how they treat opposing fan bases.

ISU on the other hand seems to be pretty brutal towards Iowa and Nebraska, although not as much towards Nebraska as they are to Iowa. Any other fan base that comes to Ames seems to be treated quite well overall by ISU fans.

That's it! You put it into words much more clearly than I can. Yes there are ISU fans that give Hawkeyes a hard time, but in general ISU fans get along with the fans of opposing teams. That's one of the reasons I'm so proud to be a Cyclone fan. I honestly believe we have one of the classiest fan bases in the country. Hawk fans on the other hand are generally (not all mind you) rude to fans from any opposing team. Well said.

As far as Nebraska fans, I don't have a problem with them. They tend to be a little arrogant, but have found them to be knowledgable and the fact that they will applaud the opposition when beaten is impressive.

Nebraska are to old to fight, that's why you don't hear to much out of them. Their fan base is like watch walking fossils!

Then why do Hawkeye fans have such a bad national reputation? I'm not saying every reputation is deserved, but there must be some reason why everywhere I've lived (MN, OR, AZ) college sports fans tell me they can't stand Hawkeye fans? That's usually when they know I'm from Iowa, but don't know I'm a Cyclone.

They don't. Cyclone fans just say that they do. Doesn't make it true. I've been to both places and I've found that the folks who have bad experiences for BOTH fan bases typically bring it on themselves.

Again I've apparently had different experiences. I used to think it was just a rivalry thing til I moved out of state and heard fans of other school talk about this.

You are wrong on this. I grew up in Iowa, a Hawk fan. Never head anything negative from Iowa State fans. Then went to Iowa State and have seen or experienced many examples of classless Iowa fans. Now live in Minnesota and the Gopher fans say the same things about Wisc and Iowa fans being the worst in the big ten.

I think you hear what you want to hear. I'm willing to bet the great majority of sports fans in Oregon have no opinion on Iowa athletics. I can't recall a time when Iowa and Oregon have met so I'm not sure why or how their opinion would have originated.

Again, Iowa's fans are very highly thought of and this is displayed and discussed every year come bowl time. The communities that host these bowls enjoy having Iowa fans in attendance and every year there are business owner's etc. quoted saying just that.

"Iowa fans are docile compared to South Florida fans" according to a security guard in the Raymond James parking lot!

Minnesota has the lamest football fans in the Big Ten outside of NU. They are pi$$ed off every year because Iowa fans and Wisconsin fans invade the metrodome and outnumber their fans on their home field. That is why they do not like Iowa and Wisconsin fans; that and the fact that Iowa and Wisconsin are their two biggest rivals. I know plenty of gopher fans and they don't have anything bad to say about Iowa fans other than that we care too much about the football team and the only reason that is is because there are no pro sports teams in Iowa.

They all think this will change with their new stadium only holding about 50k fans. They think they will fill it and there will only be a few thousand opposing fans there.

Ketel-you are the OP and you even stated yourself that just because some yelled "loser" at you, you automatically assumed it was an Iowa fan. You have nothing to support that opinion, other than that you do not like Iowa. It could have been anyone.

I have tailgated and attended games in a lot of different places and I have seen much worst than IC. I have only attended games at Boulder and Ames as far as the Big 12 goes and I see no major difference in the treatment of fans. I've been heckled at ISU games, but it is what it is. (I haven't been hit by a bottle)

Ohio St's crowd is down right nasty and so is Wisconsins. Even Illinois had some pretty harsh fans that stood outside the stadium and yelled obscenities at the opposing fans as they entered the stadium.

It happens everywhere.

I just googled "worst fans in the Big Ten" and got a poll which I voted in. tOSU destroys the competition with 50% of votes for worst fans. The next highest is Michigan with 22%. The rest is a wash.

Colorado wins the B12 crown. No surprise.

If you read this guy's article you will see a quote from a Gamecock fan that he felt like he was in Ames. LOL that is two articles in one week that don't know the difference between us and them.

Oh, and if this poll is correct Iowa fans are twice as bad as ISU fans; Iowa got 2% for worst of B10 and ISU got 1% for worst of B12. Pretty nasty bunch!

I thought maybe it was just the rivalry until I moved to Minnesota. It was interesting to discover that they had a similar view that Hawkeye fans were more obnoxious than other fans. I would think more Iowa fans would be embarassed by their reputation, but most seem to be in denial.

Denial? They don't deny it at all. They celebrate it. That is what makes them such an intolerable fanbase.

Were hawk fans embarrassed by the bathroom "service" job at the Metrodome? Hell no... they celebrated it because "Iowa fans know how to party!!""

Are hawk fans embarrassed by all of the arrests and investigations into their athletes and the University in the past 3 or 4 years? Hell no... they come up with lame *** excuses like Miami had more arrests in the 80's or Alabama has a dirtier program then we do. Yeah.... that's almost like a murderer saying that he isn't as bad as another murder because he only killed 1 person and the other guy killed 2. It is an illogical argument that in no way reduces the fact that Iowa has had half of their team run through the Johnson County Jail.

Whatever the topic, whatever was done, you can always count on hawk fans having loads of excuses or reasons to celebrate the stupid crap that they do which leaves the rest of the human race scratching their heads.

Last week I was at Disneyland dressed in a Iowa shirt, and a couple of 30ish women called me a loser. I just laughed and kept walking. classless clone fans....

See I can make things up to make the other fan base look bad also.

Nobody has to make anything up to make the hawk fanbase look bad. You guys seem to excel at being a-holes at a far higher rate then anyother fanbase that I have come into contact with. Nebraska fans call hawk fans classless.... OUCH.
