Williams & Blum Pod: Where does Iowa State land in the new Big 12 hierarchy?

Enjoy.

Maaon city bowling alley fire.

Mystic lanes in mason city burned to the ground last night. Their other bowling alley, the rose bowl burned down in 2014.

So if anyone has been dreaming of opening a bowling alley, now is your chance. Mason city would be greatful.

There's been talk of putting in a bowling alley at the mall as well as an arcade and a bunch of other family stuff. But that was supposed to be done this fall, and nothing has been done.

Under the radar connections to Iowa

I was listening to Jim Gaffigan do a guest spot on a podcast. I've enjoyed his work for a long time, and I was already vaguely familiar that he's from NW Indiana when he was giving a little personal background. I was, however, pleasantly suprised to hear him say his mother was from Fort Dodge, IA.

As someone who grew up in the FD area and has been aware of him for at least 20 years or so, it was kind of cool to learn that after all this time, I suppose. And it makes me wonder... what other vague or under the radar connections to Iowa might be out there that I'm also unaware of?

It can be people, things, events etc. Anything really. Just with a particular emphasis on connections that most Iowans might not be quick to know about.

I would appreciate suggestions on motels for the 2024 eclipse

Please only respond to this if you are familiar with this eclipse I am talking about here, which is occurring on April 8 2024.

I was living in Omaha at the time of the last big one in the US, so it was a leisurely drive to Beatrice Nebraska. I looked closely at some eclipse maps, and the best places to observe this one will be in southern Texas or Mexico. I have never been to either one, though. So, I would appreciate suggestions for motels in cities on the totality line, preferably as far south as possible. Can I book motels this far in advance? Smaller cities might be preferable to avoid crowds, but motels might fill up quicker in such cities.

Old Video - Need Help Finding Link

There’s an old ISU vs Iowa video that used to grace the internet. It’s two animated fans with computer narration talking **** - with an Iowa bias. I believe it was called “State of the Nations” or something similar. There’s a Seneca Wallace reference included. It’s a legendary video amongst my friends but we can not locate it online. Does anyone know what I’m talking about or have it saved down?

Bright Comet for Fall 2024?

Astronomers have found a new comet! They’ve labeled it C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS). And it’s something to look forward to, as it makes its closest approach to the sun (its perihelion) more than a year from now. So, the bad news is it’s not until 2024. But the good news is that early estimates of the comet’s brightness suggest it’ll be bright.

Perihelion for this comet will come on September 28, 2024. At that point, some estimates are suggesting it might be around magnitude 0.7. That brightness rivals some of the brightest stars in the sky (though, for comets, the brightness is diffuse, not in a single point).

PDF Software

I am reaching to my CF brethren for advise on a PDF software. On occasion, I receive PDF files that I need to provide notes or markup and forward to others. This is seldom and does not justify the cost to purchase a full version of Acrobot Abode or other completing PDF softwares, but I am yet to find a free downloadable version that does more than just open the fie and let you view it. Would anybody be aware of a free (or close to it) version that would open the PDF and also allow you to add notes/comments to the file? Your recommendations are appreciated.
