You can win at Football at ISU

1. Very loose academic requirements at Kansas State when Bill got there.

2. Lots of jucos very close to the school.

Those are 2 very big differences.

3) took a lot of "questionable" characters that other programs passed on, stuck them in the middle of Kansas where they couldn't get in trouble

If KU and KSU can win then ISU can too. It'll be tough as hell in a ten team Big XII where most teams are as invested and all are in better or equal locations recruiting wise. And you have to play Iowa every year. Y'all know this better than anyone so what is the solution? A creative hire. Someone that is exciting, proven, or possibly even unique

PJ Fleck- Possibly the best recruiter in the country
Dino Babers- Has won at two midwestern stops quickly (EIU & BGSU) with explosive offense
Todd Monken- Nobody was worse than USM and he knows the Big XII and how to score in this league

Surely one of those three would fall to ISU this off-season.

After seeing Mangino up close I think KU proved they could jump up for one or two great seasons. Not sure they could have maintained what they had. Snyder and Beamer are the golden ticket comparisons likely.

We've been able to win/recruit in hoops but Fred still took a super aggressive approach to getting talent in non-traditional ways because he had his eye on competing with the top programs.

That's what Snyder always did and probably the path for ISU.

From what I've read, this was Todd Monken recruiting approach at Southern Miss. Lots of transfers, juco

PJ Fleck would be nice, but the off the field problems with him are to fresh and scandalous.

I'm not too blind to say KSU football has had some similarities to ISU basketball. Not the current team necessarily but some of Fred's early teams. We kick started our hoops program after the McD years with some Snyder philosophy.

If it's possible to win in Manhattan, Kansas it's possible to win in Ames, Iowa. The next coach is stepping into a situation where there are excellent facilities, TV exposure and more money than ISU has ever had before.

ISU does have excellent facilities, but outside of KU and WVU everyone in the conference is stacked facility wise and both of them are looking to improve. The same goes for TV exposure and money.

with basketball though you need two good players to be competitive. Football there is just so many more dudes you have to keep an eye on.

Also Snyder did it with the shady kids before twitter, camera phones, instagram etc etc

Like who, or did you just make that up?

We are a few dumb coaching decisions away from 6-5, so yes you can win here.

ISU has more competitive pieces now than ever before, but we have to get someone on a plane to visit to see it. To me, THAT'S the challenge. It's the same struggle we have recruiting players. Once they get here, they see how good it could be but we have to GET them here first. The only thing we're missing is winning history.

top 5 worse jobs really? Lets loook around.

Worse Power 5 schools than ISU in terms of stadium, fans, facilities, etc. IMO

Big 12
-Kansas

PAC 12
-Oregon St
-Washington St
-Colorado (I live here, nobody cares about CU football)

Big 10
-Northwestern
-Purdue
-Rutgers
-Indiana

SEC
-Vanderbilt

ACC
-Wake Forest
-Boston College

Independent
-Air Force

On Par with ISU.

Big 12
-Kansas St
-WV
-Texas Tech (would be worse than ISU if not in Texas)

PAC 12
-Utah

Big 10
-Minnesota
-Maryland (only because they have underarmor $$, otherwise worse than ISU)
-Illinois
-Nebraska (mainly because of unrealistic expectations)

SEC
-Missouri (debatable)

ACC
-Duke (Probably worse job than ISU, but in an easier conference)
-Syracuse (does anybody even care about 'Cuse ball?)
-Pittsburgh (they are good this year, but do their fans/facilities even compare?)
-Virginia

The people that were the big Rhoads apologists are going to likely be the negative crowd going into next year.

It's obviously better than it was 20 years ago.

It is still one of the worst Power 5 jobs in the country.

I agree NO Recruiting Base(instate)...............and with all the high school football talent residing in Texas its really a tough job.........JP needs to hire someone, hell, anyone who can recruit Texas HS's like Gene Chizik. Especially if you hire a Spread Offense Coach, without recruiting better talent...we will be in for more 3 win seasons.

Yes it is one of the worst power conference jobs in the country but, on the other hand if Dan McCarney can win 9 games in one season so can other good coaches.

I think we can be successful, and I'm looking forward to seeing where our future will go, but we are a legit bottom 10 P5 coaching job, don't kid yourselves.

Hopefully we find the guy that can overcome our disadvantages and make us successful.

and the people who hate Rhoads were hoping they'd lose.

I just hope that any success the new coach had his first 4 years is attributed solely to Rhoads just like everyone attributed any of Rhoads success to chizik. What's fair one way is fair another.

Thanks for putting this together - while some can be debated ISU is not the bottom feeder most make it out to be.

CPR coached here for 7 years, lost double the games he won and is walking out of here with 20 million in the bank. People out there talking about North Texas or whatever being a better coaching gig are whacked out of their mind. 20 million bucks....let that sink in.

Iowa high schools aren't loaded with talent but I think its' better than some give it credit for. Seems like it was 10-20 years ago when one of the good central Iowa teams played one of the power KC teams and beat them easily. A coach at ISU also cannot overlook or so badly misjudge talent in his own back yard like a David Johnson or Josey Jewell who can be difference makers to your program. The fact that we play several games in Texas and Oklahoma every year is also a recruiting plus we have over schools around us like Iowa, Missouri and Nebraska. We may not get the cream of the crop but maybe we could become the northern school of choice for those athletes that get overlooked or dont' want to stay in Texas for whatever reason.
