WWJD- What Will Jamie Do?

So you want to see Fred leave and take a job with the Timberwolves?

My problem with TJ is that he's not Hoiberg. He doesn't bring the recruiting appeal of a former NBA player that knows the interworkings of the NBA and can help maximize players potential to that. ISU is not a destination unless kids think we can get them to the next level. Do you think TJ can really demonstrate that?

Just win. That's what counts. Frankly a slower pace and playing D would actually help in the tourney.

Floyd and LE played a slower pace and LE had the best 2-yr period in our history.
This quote makes no sense. What you're saying here is that only one style of coaching works and wins championships. The reason we lost to UAB was because we let them slow the game down. Had ISU not let UAB dictate the pace of the game it would've been a blowout. Let's take a school like Virginia into consideration: they play a much slower pace and very good defense. In the past two seasons, they exited in the round of 16 and 32. A run and gun style offense works with the right players and before more defensive and playing slow, boring basketball, doesn't always work. Coaches like Calipari and K know how to balance the attack and defense without running at a snails pace. The way Fred did things was great the last two years but an injury to Niang damaged us in 2014 and our cocky players let 2015 be ruined by allowing UAB to do whatever they wanted after we were squashing them in the first five minutes. But to say only slowing things down is the way to go is wrong.

TJ recruited very well under McDermott. He has been the top assistant for Hoiberg and Romar, and most people close to the program think he is an underrated x's and o's mind as well. If he is our next coach, then I will be excited to see what he can do

I'll support the team of course, but having TJ after Fred will be a very bitter pill to swallow.

Fred's two best teams were without TJ on the staff. TJ has been coaching for a long time and has been a part of 2 NCAA tournament teams.

He'll have a lot to prove and if he doesn't hit it out of the park recruiting this summer, I'd start to wonder a lot.

Sounds like this thing could really draw out. Also sounds like JP is already doing some searching and making a list. Longer it goes the more we prepare for it. TJ will be on the list, but not alone. If he is picked it's likely deserved. So curious just much is going on quietly. Feels like we'll be ready.

or if tj gets it, no one else wanted it.

Did you take a blow to the head a couple months ago? Good lord.

I prefer it is not TJ, but that is more because of reaching for a home run hire than it is an indictment of TJ. There are several reasons he would be a solid hire.

Hoiberg's recruiting has been overblown. Recruiting would not be my concern in a Hoiberg to TJ transition, assuming TJ got himself a Abdelmassih. Tactics could be boosted with a Lutz type hire imo. The concern would be at the strategic, GM level.

The "story" and attention won't be as good, but the program certainly can be.

But McD and Romar were respected coaches. TJ hasn't shown anything other than he left for Washington for a "change of pace".

I'm still hedging on the long shot that Hoiberg takes a new contract with ISU for $3-5 million with a much larger NBA buyout. You make the NBA buyout $4-5 mil, and teams will think twice before they fire a coach, pay him $2-6 million buyout and then Hoibergs buyout.

Why do you think we get the attention right now? Hoiberg and the story he brings. You take that away and we're not the media darling everyone likes, making the top 25 "favoritism" much tougher.

I never said that they were the Celtics or Lakers. They are probably just a notch under the Knicks. It's a top 5 NBA job for sure. If they can get a coach to light a fire under Derrick Rose's *** they are a title contender for sure. There really aren't any truly dominate NBA teams right now IMO. Chicago is also a destination for top free agents, something Minnesota will never be. It's just a better job dude. If you guys want to keep pretending the T-Wolves job is a better that's fine. As stated in the post above, this is about getting to the pinnacle of the basketball coaching profession.

Chicago is a destination for top free agents? Who goes to Chicago?

30 second clock will fix some of the slow pace.

Gee, you may be on to something.

Not sure why you think that was even a question. Like I said, the "story" and attention will not be as good, but the program can be. As much fun as it is to have the home grown "Mayor" story romanticized, what matters is winning. You think had Fred come in and had several .500 seasons there would be that media darling story? No, the story would be does JP have the balls to fire an ISU legend.

I just disagree. I'll refine my statement to 'it's not primarily about money'. As I was just discussing in another thread - it's about reaching the pinnacle of your profession. At least to Fred, the pinnacle of the coaching profession is the NBA. Being the best in your profession of course comes with more money, but that doesn't mean it's about the money.

it doesn't appear that you disagree with anything I said.

Doesn't really matter how good your program is if you can't get some media attention and bias to assist in the matter. What happens if we're just as good of a team but because we don't have a high profile coach, we end up getting a #5 seed over a #2 seed? Could have repercussions.

Thus, Hoiberg > Hornacek > TJ

The big 12 is brutal. Not many coaches can compete against Bill Self, Lon Kruger etc. Not sure how many schools would make TJ their HC. Maybe a Northern Kentucky.

Someone like TJ might have been a satisfactory get after the McD disaster, when the program was at rock bottom.

Wrong. For the most part the NCAA committee awards teams based on performance, not how many stories ESPN runs on them.

The upside to being a media darling is that it opens recruiting doors that otherwise may not be there. Unfortunately we missed that opportunity because Fred & Matt put all their eggs in the RV/Diallo baskets after not offering any long term commitments as to Fred's NBA timetable.

The B12 is a disaster in the tournament which probably indicates it's overrated as a league. You have several over the hill coaches that have a final four on their resume but haven't done much of note recently.

Weber and Tubby have a FF on their resume but I don't think anyone is shaking in their boots afraid to play them.

Lon and Huggy are good coaches but their best days are over.

Overall it's a deep league/solid league but brutal is a bit over the top.

Lay off the drugs.
