Mid-major schools. Iowa State is a Basketball School in the Big 12 Conference.

And CFH came to Iowa State, a Big 12 Conference school, with no previous coaching experience at any level. Please continue your argument

Iowa State was in the cellar when Fred got here. The program and fanbase were on life support and you know it. Quit acting like Iowa State is a sister of the poor. This fanbase really needs to start acting like we belong in the Big 12.

When Fred came on board, we all knew that first year was just whatever happens. Nobody had great expectations of a roster held together, so we were all ready for first-year mistakes (if Fred would make them, that is).

TJ would be a dead man walking with no head coaching experience. We just finished our 4th straight NCAA trip, won the Big 12 tourney twice, got used to a whole lot of fun basketball, and have top 10 expectations heading into next year. The second something didn't go right, TJ gets crucified, and so does Pollard for hiring his friend instead of something else.

No matter whether JP approaches people for the job and gets rejected, or just goes right to TJ, that's the narrative that scores of fans will work off of. This would be a bad, bad time for someone without head coaching experience to step into this job.

This whole thing is about being selfish. He is leaving his team, university, and the isu fanbase to coah in the nba. this isn't about money and his family, they have enough. if it was about his family he would stay here per his quotes about having it so nice here wiht most of his family around ames. it is about him, nobody else. this will blow up the bb program and sort of become ironic...transfer u may be bit by the same hand it fed from. transfers. just crazy. i would rather he send a press release and not even have a press conference. i don't want to hear about how difficult it was, how special ames and isu is, how great the fans are... just have someone type and send it out.

Im in the same boat, if Fred leaves then fine .....Bye Felecia and good luck to ya (kinda) Ill feel slighted as a fan and of this situation but then ill turn right around and focus my attention to the next coach who hopefully will be here a long time and be successful.

Agreed. This program hangs in the balance of who paces the sideline at Hilton Coliseum this year. A flop with this roster will be deadly on the recruiting trail and in future success.

Jamie has hired 2 head football coaches and 2 head men's basketball coaches at ISU. Only one of those has a winning record. A .250 batting average for an athletic director is pretty bad. If Fred does leave, he really needs to get this pick right.

Great Post Cy Cy....I was thinking the same thing, when AD's only succeed 25% of the time they usually end up looking for a new job................

I wonder what Leath is thinking right now as he sees Fred on the verge (or so it seems) of leaving, and a dumpster fire of a football program across the parking lot. Leath has never appeared to be a "long term guy" at Iowa State, and Athletics can often dictate a president's legacy or reputation, although it shouldn't. I suspect he could make big moves if this doesn't pan out well, and football continues its downward trajectory that has been steady since 2012.

Great idea. Fire the AD and all the coaches. Brilliant.

I don't want Jamie gone, but it isn't uncommon for a leader to want "his guys" in office. Hell, Jamie did that when he first got here. All coaches were replaced or fired except Bill and Christy, right? (might be missing someone)

Fred only had a buyout of $500k if he left for the NBA. If you didn't see this coming someday you were delusional. Two of his potential dream jobs will be available. It is happening.

IMO, Fred is wise to leave while he has those options available. Timing is everything. If he stays and we fail to have a great year next year. And then somehow stumble around and just do so-so. The fanbase could very well turn on him and start saying he should be fired. Fred is wise to leave now. Go for it.

I don't see Fred struggling if he stays at ISU, but thats just me. I do agree that it has been writing on the wall since those contract details were released to the public regarding his buyout.

That being said, you can't just give up if you are an AD. Fred is the face of Iowa State Athletics, and has made ISU Basketball the top sports entity in the state, and its not close.

GTFO

That might be the case for programs like Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, etc... because they will simply put more talent on the floor then most teams can compete with. For most of the other programs out there they better have a coach in place that has the X's and O's ability to outwit their opponents or they are going to be nothing more then average.

The last time ISU had a coach that went with the 80% recruiting 20% coaching philosophy we had Wayne Morgan and watching his teams play street ball while he took a nap on the bench was brutal.

Some people call it street ball, others call it up tempo or run and gun. Stinson to Blaylock to Clark for a monster slam was a thing of beauty, and got us 4 post season wins in 3 years.

I think the chances of Fred "stumbling around" are pretty remote, but even if we became an average program, which means NCAA some years, NIT others, I think Fred is so revered that nobody would be very upset. NCAA some years and NIT others is pretty good for our basketball history anyway. If Fred leaves I'm thinking he just isn't crazy about recruiting, but that's jmo.

I don't know.... Success really raises expectations.

The maniacs were lighting up the torches after this NCAA loss back in March. And that on the heels of a conf tourney title. Sorry . Conference Title (that's for you twocoach)

It'd take a lot, but I'm not sure all that much.

The fact that Fred had 16 wins in his first season, and was on the verge of probably 20-21 wins, tells me that his floor is pretty high.

Iowa fans rode Dr. Tom out of town for making the Tourney every year and then an exit after making the round of 32. Like you said, expectations raise and fans want more. Not a lot of happy campers after the UAB loss. If that happened a couple more times in a row..........who knows?

Isn't Travis Ford in year 7-8 at Okla State and hasn't won a postseason game?
