WR Position

Jake Williams will be on the field and should be until others can prove themselves (I'm looking at you Sed, Money, and Darks). Jake was far and away the best receiver last year.

JW and DD are guaranteed starters. DD's had 49 catches in 2008 (4 catches away from being in the top 10 for receptions for a season). He was injured for most of last year and still had 28 catches. When he's healthy, he's ISU's best WR (see 2009 mizzou game). JW is the fastest guy on the team and made some of the biggest catches in ISU history. He's gonna start.

After that, the last spot is up for grabs... most likely Sed.

I think all the posts speculating on who starts and who is second or third string supports that ISU is deep at WR. I cannot remember a time when the names of the second, let alone third or more deep were even known or discussed pre-season.

Historically, ISU in the best years had a good 1st string and that was it. Since Chizik and Rhoads, that has slowly changed. In many areas there is now a competent second string and in some areas like WR, even deeper. This is critical for ISU to move up in the Big 12.

And I agree with many posters about Gary - he is very, very fast. Remember, he actually is the kind of RB that fits this kind of spread as well (his primary position in H.S.). He catches the ball well and has speed to burn from his highlights. So he could potentially see the field as a hybrid RB/WR role. And don't forget about special teams, either.

Also the official RB recruits look like a good mix of thunder and lightning too.

From the highlight videos, the incoming freshman class could be one of the better ones in a long time, particularly at skill positions.

JW is FAR from a guaranteed starter

1st Team:
Jake Williams: Made big catches, caught everything thrown his way, although most see him with the 'white guy' stigma, Rhoads said that he was the fastest guy on the team last year
Darius Darks: Healthy again, he'll return to his freshmen form or hopefully an improved form in the slot
Darius Reynolds: Excited to see if he can be that big play guy opposite Williams

2nd Team:
Sed Johnson: Make or break year for Sed, we'll see
Josh Lenz: Showed good poise and some shiftyness in the opportunities he had a WR last year, for a true frosh who played RB in HS its impressive
Blanton: Picking him over Jennert, DJ probably still too skinny

As for Young and Gary, I hope they pan out, but I'll hold my optimism until they get here in the fall, Jason Carlson was supposed to set the world on fire too

For as bad as this position group was last year, at least there is a lot of competition, whoever starts will have earned it rather than just getting it by default.

I dont recall this??

I heard coach say this on 2 occasions. Maybe Money was hurt at the time.

Oh :biglaugh:

Unbiased answer but I was told David Sims is the fastest overall player and the fastest WR was either Money or Sed. Doesn't really matter either way, Jake is the man because he has shown up big in big games!

Personally I think coach just says those things. He also said that Arnaud is faster than Tiller and it doesn't take more than 2 seconds of watching the game to know that isn't true

His results beg the differ.

After Money went down with injury and Darks/Johnson were hurt all year...he was THEN put into the lineup and was our #2 option at WR since we had nobody else. If everyone is healthy Williams doesn't start this year

I think the WR position is the strongest position we have next to our O-Line and D-backs.

I'd rank RB over it. We may not have depth at RB but we have higher quality players in ARob and hopefully Shontrelle. We don't have one guy at WR that has yet to show they are Big 12 ready

Reynold's had 13 catches for 72 yards in 3 games. 5.5 yards per catch. Williams had 7 catches for 85 yards in those same to 3 games. 12.1 yards per game. Reynold's had more catches but Jake was more productive, which is all that matters. If you take away the NDSU game, Reynold's had an amazing 7 catches for 19 yards against Iowa. An incredibly horrible 2.7 average. But don't let facts get in the way of Jake Williams hate.

Everyone always gushes about Iowa's possession receivers (Ed Hinkel, Trey Stross, etc.), and when ISU finally gets not just one, but two of these guys in Williams and Lenz, everyone counts them out.

I hope everyone just keeps counting Jake out. The dude is a football player and ISU's second best receiver. He will start in the fall and be just as productive as last year.
