WR Position

The second string is very hard to predict, but I'd guess Johnson, Williams, Reynolds, and Franklin for first team. As others said, the coaches still seem to think highly of Johnson, it would be really tough to keep Williams out after his play last year, and Reynolds is probably the surest bet of the WRs.

I see your point but didn't Reynolds get here in the fall last year? And he still started until he got hurt. We don't have many playmakers at the WR position. If the new guys come in and are quicker/faster....they will play. Just like Money did last year

Yeah, but didn't he start AFTER Darks and Johnson got dinged? I think that it is more the exception that the rule that a player can come in late summer and take over a starting role by the end of fall practice. Sure, if they are quicker and faster, they are going to play, but IMO in more of a limited fashion (certain formations or sets of plays). It's going to take a REALLY good player who's also able to grasp the offense quickly to actually start the first game.

That all being said, it wouldn't surprise me one bit to see Gary or Young or both starting by mid-season.

I'm gonna bet Darks is our best WR this year.. he was hurt a lot last year. He's gonna have a big year, same with Money. Money is an athletic beast.

No he started from day 1. I know he started against Iowa which was the 2nd game and he led us in receptions the first game of the season

But SJ got hurt on the first series of the first game. So Reynolds really started from Day 2.

My opinion is it is possible, but not "just as likely". Half of the battle is learning a new system. A redshirted player has had a year in the system to learn it. A freshman can come in and learn the system and be good enough to take a spot, but that is asking a lot. Sometimes a player needs time to learn the system so that he can quit thinking about that part of it and just play the game for his abilities to become apparent and be successful. How do we know that the area that some of the redshirts were "proven to be behind" in last year was not learning the system?

I think that is why it is reasonable to think that a redshirted player may have a leg up in one area over an incoming freshman. It's not 100%, but no one is saying it is.

I would also say that redshirt freshmen have the advantage of having been through a year in our strength and conditioning program, as well as having gone through spring ball (not to mention the bowl practices this past year). That gives them a further advantage over the incoming freshmen class.

Reynolds started in that game I am pretty sure. Reynolds, Hamilton, and Johnson

Yep, that was the starting lineup. Darks was already out. My guess is if Darks was 100% for game one, Money would have been first off the bench but still played a lot of snaps.

Money is a certain calibre of athlete. He is good enough to start or play big minutes from day one.

I think the athleticism of the recieving corps has really been upgraded with this recruiting class.

Gary looks like a great athlete, but he hasn't played at WR much if at all. He has the athleticism to see the field, but he will need to learn the routes and everything required of the WR position. If he sees the field in the first game it is because we are up by a bit and we want to get him some reps in the game. Young is the wild card. By his JuCo reputation, he should be able to get a lot of PT early and really. He will probably need a game or two to really get used to D1 speed. Once he is comfortable I see him playing a lot, but probably not starting, barring injury.

I think a lot of guys see the field, and keep rotating in and out. As far as ranking them, d4nim4l hit it on the head.

Recievers coach Luke Wells said at the Council Bluffs outing that he doesn't like to play a lot of players. He will stick with the top 3-4 when they establish themselves. It is why Darks had a hard time getting back on the field. Said Jake Williams didn't give him a reason to.

He said the groups was not physically talented enough. Couldn't get off the line, get open, weren't fast enough. (surprise) I think it will be Money, Chris Young, and someone else by conference play. The true freshman tight end from Cali looks like he will be very good. Will need a r-shirt year first. Albert Gary will play right away too.

SJ hasn't shown me anything yet. Injured or not, he's not done it. Williams has. Until I see something different from SJ, Williams gets the nod over him IMO.

SJ took a WR screen last year on the 3 yd line, and I swear that my grandma could have gotten into the endzone on it, and somehow he got stopped on the goal line short of the endzone.

I know SJ HAS to be a lot better than what he has shown, and I hope he can be injury free so he can show us something. But until I see it, I'm not putting him ahead of the guy that made nearly every single HUGE catch we had last year.

If you're reading this SJ, I hope you get mad at me and prove me wrong. I'd love to see it!

1st Team:
Jake Williams: Made big catches, caught everything thrown his way, although most see him with the 'white guy' stigma, Rhoads said that he was the fastest guy on the team last year
Darius Darks: Healthy again, he'll return to his freshmen form or hopefully an improved form in the slot
Darius Reynolds: Excited to see if he can be that big play guy opposite Williams

2nd Team:
Sed Johnson: Make or break year for Sed, we'll see
Josh Lenz: Showed good poise and some shiftyness in the opportunities he had a WR last year, for a true frosh who played RB in HS its impressive
Blanton: Picking him over Jennert, DJ probably still too skinny

As for Young and Gary, I hope they pan out, but I'll hold my optimism until they get here in the fall, Jason Carlson was supposed to set the world on fire too

For as bad as this position group was last year, at least there is a lot of competition, whoever starts will have earned it rather than just getting it by default.

One good thing is that there are a lot of different talents in this group. They have the tall, stretch the field jump ball WR in SJ. They have the possession, catch everything guy in Williams. Darks is a do-everything guy. Reynolds may be our most complete WR with speed, elusiveness and hands. Lenz can make a guy miss and is tough. Then you have true spread WRs in Young and Gary coming in that are elusive and fast.

I noticed that CPR mentioned Hammerschmidt the other day at TE. I'd kind of written him off thinking that Franklin and Howard would see all the minutes and then Richardson steps in next year, but maybe Hammer is ready to step up and grab some playing time.

Didn't he fumble on the screen play as well? Either way, I've seen him in practice a few times and IMO he CAN be a dominant WR. Whether he can do that on gameday remains to be seen. But, I don't think that SJ and Williams are going to end up playing the same position. I think that it's SJ against Reynolds. IMO Jake (and Darks)has his spot locked up until Young and Gary get into town. And even then, it's going to take some great play to unseat him. I personally don't think that it can be done before the first game.

From watching his highlight tape, Jennert seems like a guy who isn't necessarily an every down receiver in this system, but there are situations where I think he's really going to be effective. The Blythe comparison seems lazy because they're both lanky white guys, but in his highlights you could see he had a great vertical and good hands, not the fastest guy on the field, but great for just going up and making a catch. 3rd down, goal line, etc, I think he's got some potential.

I also think he will have some success in mass protection type plays where we keep 7 in to block and let guys run downfield. His highlight tape looked like he did a good job sneaking behind players who were not playing disciplined zones.

My take is Jake Williams will start and the rest of the positions are up for grabs. Jake of all the people appears able to catch a lousy thrown ball in a crowd. Think Austin Flynn. That is what we need. We need those type of receivers from what I saw last year. AA is one tough dude but at time he may be inaccurate throwing. Our receivers better be able to go get the ball then.
