WR Position

Fine guys, I wrong and keep counting Williams out. Its the same stupid people who think Gary is going to have 1,000 yards receiving next year and Rashawn Parker is going to save the defense.. Keep dreaming.

Show one post on this website where somebody says either of those two things. I am actually one of the guys who has said for the last 3 years that as long as Parker is a starting DE for ISU we are going to struggle on the line in the Big 12. Great heart, great hustle, undersized.

I picked Gary to start but just for discussion purposes. I think he will be our fastest WR and get seperation when others can't. And I don't compare him to Carlson. Carlson didn't have offers from anyone else. Gary signed with an SEC school out of high school

Couple people talk about Gary. http://www.cyclonefanatic.com/forum/football/85250-2-deeps-spring-football-wow.html

And people have been all about Parker since he got hurt. Never mind the fact that he got 1 sack in 2008... in the last game of year.... against the worst team in the B12.

ISU's offense will struggle as long as the WR's cannot get off the line. Anytime ISU gets jammed, we are in trouble. Having Robinson in the backfield sure helps, without him and timely defense we would have been in trouble last season.

Our wide outs are going to have to get open and break away from their D-backs..This is a main reason Arnaud threw so many damn INTs. He has to try to squeeze every ball in a gap.

They talk about him starting for the same reasons that I do but nobody expects him to have 1,000 yards receiving.

WR is not the same as DT or OL. WR's don't need to be as mature as those positions. Really good athletes can come in and play from day 1 just b/c they have the talent. I believe that Gary has the talent

I will be surprised if Gary gets playing time this year at WR. He may play some special teams though.

You could be right. Frankly if we want to be good one offense this year we need him or Young to come in and start for us. We need more talent at WR

Why not just wait and see who starts?

No need to argue about two guys that are on the same team. They will both play. We need them both.

CPR has said great things about both. Jake is very consistent. However its audibly evident that the ISU staff has hopes that Money will be the playmaker the team needs. Are both of these statements fact? YES and both are positive!!!

I look forward to seeing Williams, Wins, Money, Wins, Darks, Wins, Johnson, Wins, GaryYoungLenzJennertRange, and oh yes WINS!!!!

When did we ever say that? if all you go by is statistics, then go ahead be my guest, but when Parker is with out a doubt the leader of the defense he has the most experience and more than likely will help the defense. jesus, some people are just based on one thing STATISTICS!!!
Sure Williams is a good receiver, great? not by any means. bigger size and can take hits.
Reynolds will by far be the best receiver this year, has the most upside and speed imo could probably take a 5 yard slant to the house. and can make you miss.

A few things I noticed last year.

Reynolds had his number called quite a few times before he got hurt. I wasn't super impressed by his juking behind the line style, but he can make people miss and will be a starter.

Williams was our biggest playmaking reciever, has great hands and got us a win over Nebraska. Why wouldn't you want that guy in on a lot of plays?

Johnson showed nothing last year. He was apparantly injured which slowed him down and hurt his production. Were his hands injured too, b/c a lot of the passes that came to him were dropped. I have low expectations from him, hopefully one of the new guys will step up and take that spot.

I think all the posts speculating on who starts and who is second or third string supports that ISU is deep at WR. I cannot remember a time when the names of the second, let alone third or more deep were even known or discussed pre-season.

Historically, ISU in the best years had a good 1st string and that was it. Since Chizik and Rhoads, that has slowly changed. In many areas there is now a competent second string and in some areas like WR, even deeper. This is critical for ISU to move up in the Big 12.
.

Or it means we have a bunch of average WR's and no difference makers. Fact is our WR's have not been good for a long time. They just haven't. We will need current players to really step up this year in order for there to be a big difference.

Now some guys that were hurt could do that and maybe some newcomers but we need playmakers.

I think the WR position is the strongest position we have next to our O-Line and D-backs.

I don't agree. RB is better. I would even say QB and I am really optimistic about LB. Our WR corp has a lot to do to be "strong".

Reynold's had 13 catches for 72 yards in 3 games. 5.5 yards per catch. Williams had 7 catches for 85 yards in those same to 3 games. 12.1 yards per game. Reynold's had more catches but Jake was more productive, which is all that matters. If you take away the NDSU game, Reynold's had an amazing 7 catches for 19 yards against Iowa. An incredibly horrible 2.7 average. But don't let facts get in the way of Jake Williams hate.

Everyone always gushes about Iowa's possession receivers (Ed Hinkel, Trey Stross, etc.), and when ISU finally gets not just one, but two of these guys in Williams and Lenz, everyone counts them out.

I hope everyone just keeps counting Jake out. The dude is a football player and ISU's second best receiver. He will start in the fall and be just as productive as last year.
FWIW- Reynolds yards in the Iowa games fall on the OC. Iowa's bend but don't break defense is designed to keep plays in front. Herman did not adjust. Williams had 2 catches...just 2 so it isn't l;ike he was all world either.

Either way, I don't think you can judge Reynolds at all based on 2 games, after he had barely been with the team, was learning a new position, and then got hurt. That isn't enough time to look at a player. On top of that you choose to eliminate one game and you want to discuss stats? Sorry but you can't pick and choose whatever states you want.

You do have one stat that is important. TD's Williams led the team in receiving TD's. But htta isn't all that matters. Who is the go to guy on 3rd down and 1? 3rd and 3? The guy that keeps the chains moving.

The other thing Jake has is consitetn hands. Everyone had problems last year catching the ball. Even Hamilton had problems for a 3-4 game stretch. I think Williams was the most consistent but then again he didn't have as many throws come his way.

I think we see Williams, Darks, Reynolds starting but wouldn't be surprosed with any number of combinations

Assume we go 3 Wide with a TE. How do you see the two deep shaping up when we start the season? Here is mine....

1st String
Darius Reynolds
Albert Gary
Darius Darks
Collin Franklin

2nd String
Sed Johnson
Chris Young
Josh Lenz
Ricky Howard

Guys that could play Keith Blanton, Jarvis West, and Jake Williams. We need to stay healthier at this position b/c we have the talent up top to be pretty decent but as we saw last year, when we get banged up the depth at the position isn't great right now.

How about Donnie Jennert? He's a RF 6'6-1/2" with sub 4.5 speed and grreat hands. The kid came with all the tools. Anybody hear anything about this guy?

I really don't understand any of this. Why are we talking about which player is best. This is a team. We need every yard each receiver can give us. The more good receivers we have the BETTER it is for the TEAM. We should yell and cheer for every reception and every yard gained, no matter which receiver does the work.
WE are are Big 12 Team. No Big 12 Team is made by any one player. We need as many good players and we can get. GET IT????
