Assume we go 3 Wide with a TE. How do you see the two deep shaping up when we start the season? Here is mine....

1st String
Darius Reynolds
Albert Gary
Darius Darks
Collin Franklin

2nd String
Sed Johnson
Chris Young
Josh Lenz
Ricky Howard

Guys that could play Keith Blanton, Jarvis West, and Jake Williams. We need to stay healthier at this position b/c we have the talent up top to be pretty decent but as we saw last year, when we get banged up the depth at the position isn't great right now.

Jake Williams will play a lot again I think. I have no idea how the new guys will be so I won't even bother guessing. Finding one or two consistent receivers will be the key to our offense this year. Arnaud will be fine if his receivers play better than last year.

I honestly don't think that you can not play Jake, he had a pretty good year last year with clutch catches in K-State, Nebby, and Minnesota.
This could shape up to be one of our finest receiving corps.

1st String
Reynolds
Darks
Johnson
Williams
Franklin

2nd String
Young
Lenz
Gary
Howard

this race is going to be wide open this year, all these guys will be playing at some point of the season, it seems like a corp that would do well in the north division and have the ability to do some damage, depending on how reynolds will be i think that he has the ability to take a 5 yard slant to the HOUSE!! Along with Sed injury free year young man! this is your year!

I'm not willing to count on Gray to be a starter until he shows up and shows us something. I realize that his videos are impressive and what not, but lets have him show up before we give a spot on the field.

I hate to say this guys and rip me for it all you want but if Jake Williams is starting for ISU next year our offense is going to struggle to score again. Sure he made a couple big TD grabs but he also struggled to get off the line a lot. Don't forget he wouldn't have even played if Reynolds, Sed, and Darks hadn't been hurt

Williams is our best route runner. If I had to wager a guess on how the rotations would shake out it would be:

1st
Williams
Reynolds
Darks

2nd
Johnson
Lenz
Young

TE
Howard
Franklin

Still think Franklin is going to be our spot duty TE this year if Howard catches on to the playbook. Franklin had issues last year being an effective blocker and Howard certainly looks the part from what I have seen.

All of our receivers had that problem last year. I understand Darks and Johnson were often injured but Johnson has given no indication since he's been here that he can get off the line.

It would be huge if one of these guys could come out of nowhere to be a Lane Danielsen or R.J. Sumrall for us. I think Darks has the best chance to be this guy.

Williams played the best out of the returning guys, so unless a newcomer beats him out or SJ/Darks were really injured all of last season I think he starts. I see Reynolds locking up a spot as well.
1st Team:
Franklin
Williams
Reynolds
Gray/Young/Darks/SJ/Lenz

2nd Team

Howard
Gray/Young/Darks/SJ/Lenz

I think 6 or maybe even 7 guys will see quite a bit of time. Perhaps West sneaks into the rotation if he has irreplaceable shake-and-bake.

Could be, but from all on-field indications, our offense will struggle even more if Darks/SJ/Lenz

The coaches speak all the time about our lack of playmaker at the WR position. They go out and get a speed guy in Gary. By the time conference play roles around I will be surprised not to see him out there personally. And I know the coaches are still high on Sed Johnson despite his struggles

I think it is interesting that we are willing to put true freshmen who have never been in the system and barely mentioning Blanton and Jennert who have red-shirted. I know some of you did, but I just think it's interesting.

I didn't put any true freshmen in my 2 deep. I think Blanton has a chance to see some PT. Still not sure on Jennert

How so? Neither redshirt or true have played. Redshirts have proven to be behind (at least last year) the others. Although they could have improved enough to get PT over the returning guys, it is just as likely the true freshman could be good enough to play before them.

I'll be honest I am more excited about Albert Gary than anyone else. Was recruited by SEC schools and has speed. I mean serious speed. We don't have anyone on the current roster that has a video that looks like his. He is a 5 yd slant and go kind of guy.

I've been in this argument before, I guess. To me, if Gary and Young were here for the spring, they'd have a legit chance to unseat someone. But showing up in June at the earliest isn't going to be enough. I'll say that I expect the starting lineup to be different at the halfway point, but here are my Game 1 starters:

WR
Reynolds
Darks
Williams

WR second string
Johnson
Young
Gary

I think that Lenz is primarily a special teams guy the next few years until this big group of JRs graduates. I see Blanton as the one guy who could surprise and come out of nowhere to make a run at that top group. I don't think he'll do it, but he's kind of the wildcard this spring.

I see your point but didn't Reynolds get here in the fall last year? And he still started until he got hurt. We don't have many playmakers at the WR position. If the new guys come in and are quicker/faster....they will play. Just like Money did last year

My opinion is it is possible, but not "just as likely". Half of the battle is learning a new system. A redshirted player has had a year in the system to learn it. A freshman can come in and learn the system and be good enough to take a spot, but that is asking a lot. Sometimes a player needs time to learn the system so that he can quit thinking about that part of it and just play the game for his abilities to become apparent and be successful. How do we know that the area that some of the redshirts were "proven to be behind" in last year was not learning the system?

I think that is why it is reasonable to think that a redshirted player may have a leg up in one area over an incoming freshman. It's not 100%, but no one is saying it is.

As the young guys like Lenz and maybe even Jennert improve we should be real deep at wide-out this year, and I look for Money to become our playmaker at that position.
