WILLIAMS: What's next (potential candidates)

I'm liking that tony Alford guy lately after I listened to the podcast. I think the new HC needs to be active on Twitter and social media. It's big these days we can't have someone who just says it isn't their thing.

What was Twitter's 40 time?

As an ISU alum with from Nebraska with latent Husker fandom, please let me also say no this would not be a good idea. If you are upset about Rhoads' end-of-game coaching errors, Pelini just got two 15-yd sideline penalties in the last 30 seconds of a 27-24 loss to NDSU. The refs stopped the game to go make sure the police were on standby for their departure from the field.

Yes, the PI penalty was bogus, and yes, he sticks up for his players, but in all the wrong ways. Not just the surly press conferences and spittle on the slo-mo replay, but he creates this paranoid "bunker mentality" for the players, that the fans are out to get them, etc. He may be a DC again, but I don't think he will be a HC any time soon. Also think JP and Prez Leath are way too concerned about nice guy brand for that.

This is one of the reasons I didn't go into coaching. I would make Pelini look tame. If my team was screwed over with that BS PI call or some of the calls that have gone against ISU in the past I would have been escourted out of the stadium by security.

Good established dual threat QB and young RB and some wideouts as well.

Better job than people think particularly since ISU isn't Mizzou and doesn't have their issues.

Lot of guys can step in and win 6-7 games. Can't overthink this hire though got to take the best guy available. Can't let ego get in the way and settle for a lesser coach because your best option wanted Miami and almost got it but settled for ISU.

I think we are getting a little bit ahead of ourselves aren't we?

I agree with everything else you say though.

What are people's thoughts on Del Miller - OC/QB coach from KSU?

http://www.kstatesports.com/sport/m-...b09d6fde8f389c

Marengo, Iowa native, Central College grad, coached at Plainfield and Eagle Grove High schools in Iowa before going to the college ranks. Coached under Hayden Fry/Bill Snyder for a lot of years. Coached Ryan Lindley, Kevin O'Connell, El Roberson, Colin Klein, and Jake Waters - would be a good fit for Lanning.

His age works against him, IMO, but he may be someone to look at.

To those who state we don't have a chance for any specific coach. Please remember there are all sorts of clauses that could be in the separation agreement. For example often there is a non-competitive clause that could keep Miles from going to any SEC school. Few colleges will list ISU in their agreement. Taking ISU to a bowl puts him right back at the top of the best available coach list.

He's already there without having to risk looking like every other coach that has been through here.

Mangino fits the active on twitter bill! I also think for a big guy his twitter speed was pretty impressive! That son of a Jabba the Hut! :realmad:

I could be wrong, but I think those clauses get thrown out the window when the coach get fired.

Les Miles will be 63 next year. His next job will probably be his last job. I don't think he would want to end his career at ISU.

No one has mentioned:

Mark Hudspeth, 5th Year Head Coach U.L.-Lafayette of the Sun Belt Conference. 4 consecutive seasons of 9-4. Previous coaching at Miss. St. and N. Alabama.

The only issue I have with Matt Campbell is he coaches at Toledo. Toledo is traditionally a good mac team so just like NIU I think a coach from there will always win. I don't think he wouldn't make a good coach I just would want him to get more expience and maybe coach in the AAC like take over Memphis or Cincinnati to see how he would do there. In truth Iowa State should've beaten him and we beat them last year. I just don't know if he is P5 ready yet, if want him to get more connections, because what makes a good HC partly is his position coaches and coordinators he has with him.

I think ole gene is a good example of this. He was a terrible HC and at Iowa State he had terrible coordinators and he lost a lot but at Auburn he had great coordinators and a NFL QB and he won the natty. I'm not saying we can't or shouldn't go with a young guy, but older guys like Dino Babers or Tony Alford might be able to bring aboard some experienced talent to their staff.

Why do people consider this (or Kendall Briles) a serious option? No, Kirk Ferentz's son isn't going to come be head coach at a rival in-state school to the one his dad coaches. Also, Kendall Briles isn't going to coach at a school in the same conference as his father.

Some common sense would be nice.

Agree, common sense would be that neither kid is ready for a job like Iowa State.
