WILLIAMS: What's next (potential candidates)

Let's see if Ferentz wants to play actual competition and bring him to Ames.

I am sure that no one has tried to "obsess" about such things. They are real issues that come up in the process of recruiting that no change in "culture" is going to make magically disappear. If you cannot counter them in the recruiting process, you will lose in the process. Pretending they do not exist will yield failure.

I agree on focusing on the things you have control over, however.

Not to be argumentative, but the change of culture has to start with moving on and not worrying about things you can't control. I would argue that the disadvantages ISU has sneak into the conversation at all levels way too often. TV commentators talk about it all the time, writers write about it because it comes up in the conversation. Not once yesterday did I hear the TV guys say what a challenge it was to get players to Manhattan, KS.

There is smoke on this, but it's very early so hard to tell who's pushing the rumors.

I don't think it's too serious, but I'll be interested to see what happens in the next couple of days.

Agreed. No one has ever talked about how hard it is to get kids to Iowa City. And we are actually closer to a major airport.

Actually the announcers were more than complementary to ISU the last two home games. They almost gushed about fan support, the stadium, facility improvements, and how Ames is a great college town.

If Hoke is interested you hire him. It didn't work out at Michigan, and maybe the pressure got to him. Who knows, but if he wants to come in and prove he can Coach, give him the challenge. It's not like there is a ton of similarity between Michigan and ISU's football culture.

I did my part -- sent Jamie a Hamilton and asked him to put it toward the Rob Ryan fund.

Hello no. #6 rated recruiting classes and couldn't win in the Big 10. No way

But that's just it. Hoke can recruit and we need a guy who can recruit to Ames. Hoke failed at Michigan because his offense isn't suited to Michigan or the BIG. He didn't need to change Michigan. Just wasn't good fit at U of M. Hoke would be a steal IMO.

Hoke has had a whole year to think about what went wrong for him in Ann Arbor and think about where he wants to be as a coach and how he would do things different. It is the kind of huge hire that I feel JP needs to make, because it is probably his last chance to do it. Follows the kind of style that fits the team. Excellent recruiter.

Might be a great fit, with good coordinators.

It didn't really work out at Ball State either; Hoke had a losing record there.

If he could recruit that well to Ames, there is no doubt he should be the guy. Have a hard time believing he could recruit that well though. Also, he is a Michigan Man. His "Manball" offense was the exact perfect fit for Michigan. Its like he recruited perfectly in advance for Harbaugh. He had the overwhelming support of university and still couldn't get it done with great talent. To me, that is a little concerning.
