Not necessarily with influenza. Even the CDC admits deaths from influenza are WAY underreported. Because it's difficult to test for something that is only detectable a few days after infection. So unless they get tested right away....two weeks later.....someone may die from complications. But without a test positive showing it does not go into the books as influenza. How can it unless you are making stuff up? Dr. Fauci in March was correct. This will likely end up being like a very severe flu season. Difference being......we've never had a microscope on and kept a scoreboard with influenza. We just accepted the risk and got busy living.

I haven't really seen anything about how this happened. It clearly didn't happen from school because it just started yesterday. How did they know to test? How did they get it? I'm confused about this story honestly, there just isn't enough information on this to make me feel one way or another.

The kicker, and the most important part IMO that you left off either intentionally or not, is that the doctor and hospital don't get kickback money for calling it an influenza death so accuracy on the death wouldn't be compromised. But guess what, they certainly get money for calling it a Covid death. I've had 8 different nurse friends tell me how upsetting it is to them that people come into the hospital for something, die, then get tested AFTER THE FACT and the hospital calls it a Covid death. Heck, LAST WEEK my friend told me she had been dealing with this 27 year old who had cancer for 5 years, but he recently died. They tested him for Covid, he was positive, so the hospital said he died of Covid and not cancer. That's asinine! Why? They need the money.

For the conspiracy believer I have nothing as there will always be another “but...”. I can tell you that there is no widespread conspiracy among doctors. They are too busy and have other things to worry about. It is true that the HOSPITAL is paid somewhat more for TREATING a Covid patient than a similar non Covid illness. This was part of the CARES act and helps in a few ways. 1) hospitals were financially gutted during the shut down, especially small ones. No surgery for a month in current payment structures is a near death blow. A lot of small hospitals operate on margins <2%. 2) Helps in taking care of the uninsured which Covid is hitting harder. 3) helps cover the increased cost of PPE, staffing (don’t want your Covid nurse caring for non-Covid if possible), increased health needs these patients have, increased cleaning, and in some cases hazard pay. Most doctors are paid either salary or by RVU or a combination. In none of these cases would their income be affected by a Covid patient or Covid death. Putting them on a ventilator could raise their RVU but do you honestly think doctors are putting people on vents for more money? That would be like getting paid to beat your head into the wall. I know hundreds of doctors from all political backgrounds. I am sure somewhere, somehow, there are a few finding a way to milk the system. Bad people exist. But, it isn’t widespread.

Doctors, in a hospital situation, are rarely involved in the billing and coding. It is the CFO, controller or and A/R clerk that codes invoices to insurance companies and the gov't.

That is true, but not on an individual basis. Coding is done by individual coders.
Things are coded based on the doctor's dictation and assessment though. It's not like a doctor can say that a patient died of a stab wound and the coder changes it to a gunshot wound. The audio of the doctor's dictation is stored with the patient chart.

I will agree with that. Yes, coding is designed to take the doctor's findings and code it in a way that is most beneficial from an expected payment from the insurer standpoint. That said, they can't create outcomes that aren't there. Insurance companies are incredibly quick to bounce charges if they're not properly justified.
It's all about the money, though. The coder's job is to maximize the amount the organization can bill for.

On average, a Covid patient pulls and additional $2600 over a non-Covid patient. That is why if they haven't been test and they have the symptoms, it is in the financial interest to call it probable Covid.
