Battle over playing 2020 college football season intensifies as no one can get on the same page
Is there not currently conflict among the P5 conferences on whether to have a season or not have a season? Is this not obvious?
Long story short, I have a bad feeling that the Big 10 is going to come out of all of this smelling like a rose...
To me it pits "playing football" vs. "science" as though there is nothing more to the question than that.
Society has lost the ability to tell the difference between a news report and an editorial or an opinion from someone that also reports the news. Anyone that throws all of “media” into the trash generally falls into this category. CBS, NBC, NYT, and evening Fox have both reporting AND editorial and entertainment. People would be happier if they could recognize the difference.

I believe this was directed at me. Ok. So, are you saying media has not changed since the Dan Rather days? It's absolutely clear to me the bulk of the change is to solicit conflict. If you can't see that, then you're not old enough to understand how far down hill the entire media business has fallen.

First off, it appears there are 3 P5 conferences on the 'same' page and 2 others that are on their 'same' page. So 'no one' is inaccurate. 'Battle'? Would that mean 'those for' and 'those against'? Regardless, 'no one' is still incorrect. So, yes, I am quite literal. But, choice of headline words is clearly slighted toward instilling conflict. And, lastly, since the season has not yet started AND the B12 has stated 'things can change', this again is isolating conflict where none is needed. I thrive on truth and mutual understanding. Not this type of 'sensationalism'.
Pretty much everything that is put out now reads like an editorial, particularly the clickbait headlines. It's the #1 reason I stopped reading/watching the news in any capacity.
Ahhh. Great question. IMO, brick and mortar, has been forced to go tabloid because of internet taking a big chunk out of their pie. It's a capitalistic (and I believe in capitalism, but a bit more 'ethical') hand they're forced to play. In the end the real question is: are current conflicts a consequence of this type of reporting? And are the 'masses' smart enough to not side with this type of negative rhetoric?
I have a buddy that works in the Univ of Illinois AD and he just told me the Athletic Director told them the Big 10 is starting to discuss rescinding their decision to not play this fall. Who knows how accurate that is and how serious the talks are, but I wonder if the Big 10 is starting to feel the pressure to play?

Hope everyone is not reacting to Dodd’s tweet rather than the actual article. People are not on the same page.
Even better that the sportswriters get all defensive that they aren't begging for the season to get canceled.
No idea why they writing articles against their own livelyhood outside of talking points being pushed by corporate.

. There has always been conflict. Older people may remember William F. Buckley's debate against Gore Vidal. The McLaughlin Group was a political debate show for decades. What's different now is that news outlets no longer even pretend to separate news reporting from opinion. Different parts of the public are dealing with different sets of facts which may be true, but don't give a complete picture. And then in the Wild West of the Internet, there is no objective standard of truth at all

The Big Ten schools that want to play vs. the Big 10 schools that do not want to play are not on the same page. The SEC/Big12/ACC are not on the same page as the Big 10/Pac 12.
Part of the issue is the measurements are basically relative. Using terms like “under control” is a common term. When this first hit, “under control” was basically meant flattening the curve in order to not over run the medical fields. Most states, have not overrun their medical facilities, but that measurement for under control is not considered correct now.
So, if theP5s play and no team shuts down then they will say it was a success. If they are forced to shut down conferences the other side will say it’s a success. If they end up like Iowa baseball and softball, well, now we Probably will have both sides say they were right and it will be a gray area.

This is 100% correct and one of the biggest issues we have as a country. Identifying editorial/opinion/straight news is a skill that we were taught in elementary school all the way through college. Nobody was paying attention, and we're paying for it now.
