Why was Wayne Morgan fired?

Awesome Rick,

McDermott does not recruit well. I don't know who told you that lie
How the heck do you know this? His recruiting is actually just as good as Wayne's if you look closer. And this freshman class will be pretty good down the road.
Also, when it's all said and done, Craig and Gilstrap will both be way better than any of Morgan's recruits. And if we get HB, he'll be way, way better.

You will get ripped for this, as people will classify Stinson and Blalock as "Morgan's recruits" even though they signed to play for Eustachy...Morgan recruited them to play for Eustachy, not himself...

This being said...Carr, Taggart, Clark, Hubalek, Stinnett, Westbrook and Degand have all shown to be pretty solid players...I'd take any of those guys, even though none of them are first team all conference players.

Brackins is better than anyone Wayne landed...and I'm excited about the future guys coming in too.

I also find it funny that a lot of the same people that say youth is bull excuse, believe Morgan was a great recruiter...when if they wrote off freshman on their performance that Wayne recruited the way they do for McDermott...they'd be looking at the same things...

Players that came to play for Wayne...

Carr- Had big game at Texas, otherwise very modest numbers...completely different player as a Junor and Senior at St. Joseph's.

Taggart-Showed a nice touch on around the bucket...was hampered by losing weight due to the flu before the year, but got worse as the season went on, playing no defense what-so-ever, and putting up modest numbers on offense...completely different player as a Junior and Senior at Memphis

Clark-Good as a freshman

Hubalek-Came in as a sophomore who thought he was a guard...pleasant surprise, but took his game to a completely different level under Mac as a Junior and Senior.

Stinnett-good as a freshman

Westbrook-Very modest numbers and role player for a lousy Minnesota team as a frosh...now leads a top 25 team in scoring as a Junior.

Degand-Won the starting pg duties as a freshman at NC State but was injured for the season...still battling injuries as a sophomore.

Don't tell me youth is a bs excuse...clearly experience makes a HUGE difference.

Is that why those "experienced" Iowa and Kansas teams pounded us like a Veal Cutlet this year?

First off...Kansas brings in the best of the best every single year...and returns Sherron Collins and Cole Aldrich from a National Champion...

Iowa beat us fair and square...although I'd be willing to bet that if we played them in Hilton things would be different, as they are battling the same things as us...the only difference is that we are bringing in Colvin and Gilstrap...they are bringing in Eric May and Brennan Cougill.

Are you saying experience doesn't matter, and that it is a bs excuse, since you quoted that?

Here are Mac's recruits

06
Dunson - productive bench player, transferred
C Johnson - bench player, told to transfer
W Johnson - Big 12 caliber starter, transferred
McIntosh - clearly overmatched, transferred
Taylor - Big 12 caliber starter, kicked off

Mac's most productive recruiting class as a group to date, which is weird since all are gone. Dunson immediately contributed off of the bench, and both Wes and Mike T were Big 12 quality players. Cory was told to transfer, while McIntosh was looking for a different situation. Certainly a good class given the short time. Would have been nice to keep one one of the freshmen more than 2 years or one of the juniors more than one.

07
Boozer - end of bench player
Brackins - All Big 12
Brister - flameout
Garrett - maybe Big 12 caliber starter
Staiger - maybe Big 12 caliber starter
Vette - homesick

I don't need to say anything on Brackins. Brister and Vette were late reaches. Boozer will likely never be more than a role player. Garrett and Staiger look like Big 12 quality players at times and not at others.

08
Buckley - not playing at all
Eikmeier - not playing at all
Hamilton - solid bench player
Mann - not playing at all
Pomlee - RS
Vanderbeken - now solid coming off of bench

Hard to tell on most of these guys that aren't playing much at all. Hamilton has been a pleasant surprise, while Vanderbeken is finally contributing (which any JC recruit you bring in should do).

09 Colvin, Gilstrap - These guys look like a good group, but the same people telling me that told me Buckley and Eikmeier would be getting serious minutes with a chance to start.

10 Dykstra, Kadima - Haven't heard diddly on Dykstra, while Kadima gets us yet another point man.

I agree Barnes would change the complexion of our recruiting efforts. McDermott seems to do an alright job, but there's no evidence to say he's anything special. Of the guys that look like Big 12 caliber starters....will any actually play at ISU for four years?

Just from a talent standpoint, Wayne Moore delivered the goods so far more than Greg. Yet I expected Greg to overcome the talent issue with better team play. Right now we are challenged to meet the results of our last three years. I think the more synchronized slow down system also results in less talent since this level of player is willing play team slow down.

Are you saying experience doesn't matter, and that it is a bs excuse, since you quoted that?

I'm saying we got beat by Kansas, who was as "(in) experienced" as us, because they have better talent, which we clearly lack.

I'd also point out we got beat by Iowa, after their coach, drew up half-time adjustments and out-coached our coach in the 2nd half. Something I've noticed frequently in the last 2.5 years.

So I conclude, experience doesn't nearly count as much as talent and coaching, but unfortunately ISU MBB is lacking in all three.

clearly morgan wasnt a bad coach. his first year here, he goes to the NIT final four. His second year, we go to the second round of the NCAA tourney. His last year, we had a bad year, but definetly not as bad as the year we are having right now. When Morgan was here, ISU bball was so exciting. Hilton Magic existed. If Pollard fired Morgan because of ISU's record, than Pollard made a terrible decision.

I think everyone needs to go back and vote on that other thread:jimlad: This started to be about Morgan, who I never liked but kept my mouth shut, and his justified discharge. I only heard him speak about 4 times but I could never believe he acted or sounded like a coach. As a recruiter I think he is sorely missed.

This will be our 5th consecutive year we've gotten worse. It's no wonder people are getting frustrated. Yes, I am also a Cubs fan.

Honestly, at this point I'd rather watch WBB but it's rarely televised.

How close do I have to look? We only have one freshman out of a huge class making any impact, and we're one of the worst teams in the Big 12 and one of the worst Cyclone teams of the last 25 years. If his recruiting were better it would be having an impact on the court.

Stinson's hand affected his ballhandling a little bit....otherwise it didn't change his game much...he was the same player at the beginning of his sophomore year that he was at the end of his junior year.

I was one that was tired of WM and was glad to see him go when he was canned. I really though GMac was a great fit for our team and, at the time, was glad JP pulled him in before EIU could get to him.

Unfortunately, WM's two post season trips in three seasons are looking like a fairy tale now compared to the three not-even-close-to-the-post-season years we've had/are having under three years of GMac.

I hope GMac turns it around but I've been saying that since he arrived in Ames...
