They still need oxygen to power their mutated mitochondria. Without it they couldn't convert human flesh into ATP, and without ATP, rigor mortis sets in.Why would it work? Have they established that zombies breathe, or need to? If they don't, it can't really help. If they do, you're in business.
The zombies in the walking dead don't breathe. Remember those zombie heads in the fish tanks under water?
