w/ Ryan Harklau (1 hr)

“Four draft picks on defense”?

This was the bright spot for me, in the midst of the boring betting talk (insert “beating dead horse” gif here).

I seem to recall that he tagged Tampa, Dom Orange, Onyedim and Malik Verdon.

I don’t really have too many quibbles with those, aside from the fact that Verdon was 99% projection…because Harklau is sky high on his athleticism—at 6’4” 225, Kyle Hamilton-type size.

But if he’s going so much on projection, why not Jeremiah Cooper as well? Sure, he still needs to add 10-15 pounds (a healthy offseason will take care of that), but he has a bit more experience than Verdon, is a heady player—and has blazing speed.

Or, why not include Beau Freyler? Or Myles Purchase? Because it’s hard for me to think that neither will go in seven rounds.

And that doesn’t include the totally unproven players that we’re already hearing loud noises about. Names like Ike Ezeogu, Jamison Patton, Kooper Ebel, and on and on.

I mean, seriously. The one guy set on defense I don’t think has a lot of chance of getting drafted is the one with a ton of experience—Gerry Vaughn. And that’s only because a guy with his listed 5’11” 231 frame would have to have a monster season…AND rip off a sub 4.5 40 at testing to manage it.

I would prefer to have Brock on the roster. But I have a (biased) belief in the young guys. I saw Brock spin back into a defender way too many times instead of getting 5 more yards. He had terrible instincts with that move. But he was pretty reliable getting to the LBs at least.

I'm all in on the Sama hype train. I think he could be special.
Totally forgot about Sama. In my defense I don't follow recruiting so if they haven't seen the field as Cyclones I won't have an opinion on them.

I believe he was only listing guys that are NFL ready now from a physical/production stand point. He did mention Purchase as a potential 5th. Obviously, there are more than those 5 on defense that could get drafted over the next 5 years.

I think he was just trying to make people understand exactly how good the defense could be this year.

I think Brock could have been very good. As good as Breece? Better than Norton's ceiling? Probably not. But a good transition between elite RBs.

But between inconsistent line play and injuries he never was able to really get it going. And even if our OL was great last year, Sanders and Silas just aren't at Brock/Norton's talent level.
Biggest part of this podcast for me was:
- Our O line actually had days in camp this year where they beat up on the D line. That's like really promising. Probably an indication we will be able to run the ball easier this season.
- The RB room doesn't have a star but i'm still excited to see the combination of Sanders, Norton, and sprinkling in Abu Sama in some games. Everyone around the program seems to think Abu Sama is a GUY

I think this is one of those unique years where we actually do not sweat UNI much and handle them kinda easily. The hawkeye game of course is always crazy and impossible to predict.

I don't remember Ryan stating much about the WR, but I could have missed it. But he did say a lot of 3 TE sets and it sounded like multi-back sets are also a possibility, which could indicate a lack of the WR room?

Agree... the vast majority of these guys are WAY more mature than I was at that age. I'm usually very impressed by them when I see interviews. It takes a LOT of hard work and dedication to play at this level. I'd say most kids that age would not be able to hack it.

*same goes for Marching Band kids too btw. Both my kids were in college marching bands... and it takes up almost all your free time... especially at ISU. I still don't know when they find time to study... and the majority of them are engineering students as well. Crazy good kids.
Agree. Hard work and dedication! Marching Band kids: Wake up, go to field/practice/march/play instrument. If time, eat. Go to class. Eat? Class. Marching Band Practice again. Eat. Study. Sleep. Repeat. Football weekend, perform.

I don't know that the above is true, but I know they have little free time, and most really enjoy it.

ISU athletes: Similar, but with their sport, practice, training and travel.

So, Harklau said that only one 'beer' helps support ISU student athletes, Ames Lager, from West O. does this mean that other West O beers, from West O, are not going to the We Will, just the Ames Lager?

And what is the coffee and vodka again, that also goes to We Will?

Correct, Ames Lager is the only beer affiliated with We Will. The other might give a % to Iowa State in general, or the athletic department, not sure.

Carson Hansen. RB, 6-2, 210. Minnesota Gatorade POY.

Lots of Abu Sama mention here, rightly so. But Hark spoke strongly about Carson, as have others in earlier weeks. Just wanted to get his name into the discussion.
And since Harklau mentioned he ran a 10.8 100m…

10.85. Round up, or round down?

Still darn good for a guy listed at 6’2” 210.
