Travel woes

Global Entry was lightning fast in Chicago on Sunday. Less than a minute at both Security and Customs. Of course the bags took so long that some of the people without global entry started arriving while we were waiting.

Maybe I need to call out my anxiety with having someone that close to me so I can get the aisle seat the middle seat and the window seat all to myself on the airline's dime.

Seriously, though, I don't see tall people getting free upgrades for more leg room. Maybe they do and I don't know about it. I am uncomfortable at 6' with my long legs. I can only imagine the agony being 6'8 or taller trying to fold yourself into those standard airline seats...

I am a little concerned about daughter. She is going on a trip to South America this summer. The latest information mentioned that there was no need to exchange money because everyone accepts US$ in said country, however ATMs are "few and far between" so they should take all the cash they will need for the entire trip. This is a safe country as South America goes and she already has a moneybelt, but I am more than a tad concerned about her carrying around relatively large sums.

This is dumbass advice tell her to absolutely not do this. It would help if we knew what exactly was the country but it really doesn't matter this is absolutely not the way to go. If she is staying at a decent chain hotel (ie not a hostel) there will be an ATM on site. The better option is bringing a CC with no foreign transaction fee and using that for the majority of the time sprinkled in with the smaller amounts of cash from the hotel ATM. And be very weary of off site ATM's that aren't attached to a bank branch.

Yeah, my sister actually retired to said country so I am going to be soliciting her for advice on the issue.

Son arrived in Kenya very late at night. Was a little spooked by security walking around carrying AK’s. Driver picked him up and ran every red light taking him to the center where he was staying. He had an AK in the vehicle with them

When he was preparing to return home he was told to ignore anyone wanting him to pay the exit tax. He had a photographer ask him about where to pay the tax. The two stuck together and weren’t bothered

This thread has been a good read. I’m off to Croatia, Rome, Paris this summer and the pick pocket scene in the latter two seem on point. And so, I’m planning accordingly.

There are tons of stories on the internet and I know that these are not made up. Money belt is your friend although it makes my waistline bigger than it is lol

My ex colleague’s hubby was traveling on a bus in Rome back in 2014 and he had his wallet in his pocket. He felt someone groped his pocket but saw the the woman standing next to him was wearing a sling so he ignored that feeling thinking that it must be a mistake. That happened twice. The third time he just felt weird and immediately reached for his pocket, finding out the wallet was gone. The woman was getting off the bus at the same time and he acted by instinct grabbing that woman, only to find out that it was a fake sling and arm……. Luckily he was able to get the money back.

Dad almost got pickpocketed in Rome when someone tried to distract us on the metro. Someone slipped into his pocket (Mom saw that) but luckily he was wearing money belt and there was nothing in his pocket.

We met several tourists and they shared that they knew several people in their cruise group who became victims of pickpocketing.

I’ll be taking a neck worn money ‘belt’ and it will be under my shirt during all things, unless paying for something at that moment. Hoping that works well.

Not to say that it doesn’t happen, but I stopped with the money belt in Europe 5 trips ago. Just be aware. Keep most of your money in the hotel and don’t worry about it. It’s probably more likely you lose money than get ick pocketed.

When I was in Scotland I grabbed like £200 just to have some cash. When I got to the airport to leave, I still had £160 of that money. I paid EVERYTHING via contactless card or google pay.

The only thing my wife and I do is if we have a credit card that has the same number, only one will carry that card. The good thing is that most cards these days have different numbers so if they get stolen/lost, you only have to cancel one. I've also moved to Ekster wallet that I keep in my front pocket.

Just spent a few days in NYC...crowded as all hell compared to suburban, Iowa. However, felt safe 98% of the time. People kept to themselves but never felt nervous with my luggage/wallet on the subways. A couple of the days my shorts had a zipped back pocket which was great for reducing stress of getting it stolen.

‘We’re paying twice for the same experience’: Plus-size travelers hit out at ‘discriminatory’ airline seat policies

Curious as to people's thoughts about this....

I can kind of see all angles on this. Some people simply are bigger and need more room. However, if I'm paying full price for a seat, I deserve my full seat if I'm next to that person.

One time when I was 20, a very large man sat next to me and he was so overweight, I couldn't get my tray down (his leg was in the way). Had to hold my drink and everything. At the time I wasn't assertive enough to speak up in fear of offending him. Now I would simply ask the flight attendant to rearrange my situation because I paid a full price.

I think airlines should have a very clear rule on what they will do in this situation. Whether its you have to pay double or 1.5 ect, just be clear. If a person doesn't agree or like that rule they know up front and don't have to use that airline.

Stuff the cash in your undies, if they do take your cash, at least you get a quick handsy at the same time.
