Travel woes

I could lose a little weight (I don’t spill over into others seats) but do think if you can’t fit completely between your arm rests from top to bottom (not look like someone wedged you between the arm rests) either buy first class or you need to buy two seats.

I’ll be taking a neck worn money ‘belt’ and it will be under my shirt during all things, unless paying for something at that moment. Hoping that works well.

I've looked at buying the t-shirts or socks with the built in compartments for hiding money. Also the jackets or shirts from places like SCOTTeVEST or Pacsafe. Expensive, but IMO worth it if it prevents pickpockets.

I have a small backpack that I use as my personal item when we travel. It has a zippered pocket on the inside of the backpack - so that part is against my back and not easy to access for someone standing behind or next to me.

What is the difference in price between 1st class and coach usually?

Like is 1st class double?

The first random flight I just looked up on American Airlines, first class is a little more than double basic economy, but less than double what main cabin is.

You also get a couple bags checked for free so if you need that it narrows the difference. Also, free food and drinks. That should lure them.

I'm not a big fan of physical touch, in general. For example, I'm not a hugger. I don't like people in my bubble if they are not invited.

Last flight I took, the dude next to me was using 15-25% of my seat. Due to the location of his girth along the midsection, he was spilling into my seat below the arm rest. I'm fit but I'm not huge (6'2" and 205lbs). It was all I could do to squish myself into my remaining seat room so his love handle wouldn't rub against me.

Last flight, window seat guy was quite broad shouldered and fully used the armrest plus more. I just slouched a little to make due.

I've used a hidden neck pouch/"money belt" for every non-Canada international trip and it's worked out well for me. Just keep your passport, credit/debit cards and higher bills in there. In my very thinned out wallet, I usually have about the local currency equivalent of $20 US.

This thread has been a good read. I’m off to Croatia, Rome, Paris this summer and the pick pocket scene in the latter two seem on point. And so, I’m planning accordingly.
I've been to both Rome and Paris and never had any issues. If it is a concern, get a money belt and keep your necessities in that. Both were safe, well mostly besides a moment in Paris where security told us to leave an area near the subway because of a possible "bomb threat." The only time I felt unsafe was when we were driving in that crazy city.

Then just read the posts following yours lol. Weird. I've never had any issues with all the times I've been out of the country, but maybe some "tourists" show easily that they're tourists. Granted, I sometimes have a camera bag attached to me. Also saw that you'll have a neckline belt.

I've also heard of the ole' display of a wallet on the ground not necessarily to make people bend down and reach for it, but to have the psychological effect of making a person walking in the area check their pockets to feel for where theirs is, thus notifying the pick pocketers where you're holding your items.

Global Entry is under-represented in this thread. If you have ever been frustrated at the immigration line to get back into the US, get Global Entry. Now, I hardly even stop walking. Go right up to a kiosk. Walk right through. Seriously, last month, I got off my flight from Delhi in Newark and was at my domestic connecting gate in 30 minutes. And that includes TSA Pre-Check to get into the domestic terminal.

Eliminates a ton of "travel woes" on re-entry.
I had a similar story at Ohare a month ago. I went from off the plane through security, changed terminals using the train, back through security, and boarded the plane in 35min.

I will never not travel internationally without Global Entry.

(Though the pro-tip for you non-Global Entry people is to use Mobile Passport which is nearly the same thing)

I have more issues with manspreading than overweight people on airplanes.

I came here to say something about this. I'm like 6'6", 300 and it's very difficult to fit in a plane seat, width and height both. I've been on flights where the person in front of me reclines and I'm staring at the top of their head.

I try to take up as little space as possible, but it's hard.

This reminds me of a recent flight, Denver to Louisville. we reach the point were we can recline our seats. Person infront of me reclines, I recline. Immediately I have a 'masseuse' kneeing my seat with rhythm and with purpose. I choose to ignore it... it lasted 25 minutes. The last 5 minutes or so wasn't as intense, lol. I never looked back, never complained, just let it be.

When were to deplaning I glanced as I stood up, she was just a normal average 40 year old lady. Use words not actions to communicate Karen.

That’s the thing, some people are just big. But I don’t think most men need to spread their knees three feet apart for four hours.

Did you ever consider saying something to the flight attendant? glad you at least had the arm rest down!

I'm 5'5 160 and I feel the seats are small, so I can't imagine being a bigger dude.

That's one of those situations that there's no good answer. I could have said something to the flight attendant, but I had no way of doing that discretely. And it's unlikely she would've moved me anyway. So then I'm uncomfortable AND the guy just heard me complain he's too big for his seat.

I just squished myself against the window and tried to read my book without rubbing against him.
