Thursday DC speculation....

I'm starting to wonder about another possibility concerning the DC position. PR could already have an agreement with a coach who is fulfilling his obligations to his present school. Not all that common in the days of what's in it for me, chizik-style coaches, but still a possibility.

I, for one, would not be too impressed by a coach currently recruiting athletes and their families, asking for a committment to him and his current school, knowing all the while he's leaving in a few days to bolt for ISU. That's the definition of a "what's in it for me" coach...

I see one of three possibilities:

1.) Everybody is turning us down and we are still searching

2.) Someone has "accepted" but is waiting to hear if some other schools work out instead of ISU

3.) Coach is from either the Cards or Steelers and we won't know till after the SB.

I sure hope we are not in the #2 scenario where we are looking to hang our hat on a guy who is holding out to see if there are greener pastures before moving to Ames.

That's assuming that the coordinator is an active recruiter - often times they are not. I may be wrong, but I'm thinking that one of the times that Loney left was shortly after signing day. He is an example of someone who was a good coach, but not a great recruiter. With only 6 allowed on the road at a time, you can afford to have a couple of guys who don't have a great recruiting reputation.

Saw a note on footballscoop.com that UT-Martin is looking for a new DL coach. Why does this matter to us? The old DL/S&C coach is a guy that was at Rice from 2005 to 2006. Again, just grasping at straws...

Adam Beauchamp

This is what I like the most:
He implemented a complete off-season, pre-season and in-season strength and conditioning program for the Rice football program which had a six-win turnaround from 2005-2006 and a post-season bowl game for the first time in 45 years.

I think it'd be stupid to announce our D-Cord at a basketball game, wouldn't be much excitement IMO, It'd be a "bout damn time now what the hell are you doing here go recruit" attitude.

Best post on this subject thank you

True, but that would be just slightly better than someone accepting the position and then moving on a few days later...

On a side note, I saw an interesting exchange this morning at the East Hy-Vee Starbucks. Tony Petersen (former QB coach who was let go by Chizik) stopped into the Starbucks and McFarland came in the store right after. The two talked for a few minutes and I overheard Petersen say "I'm staying around here in some capacity." I don't know what he could possibly be doing for Iowa State or if I am reading too much into it, but he was decked out head to toe in Iowa State gear. I highly doubt McFarland is applying for any jobs if he is till in Ames at this point.

Did you see either of them filling out a Starbucks application? :jimlad:

No, but I will say that McFarland looked pretty rough. Granted he is not exactly Derek Zoolander, but he looked like he just woke up and was wearing boots that were way too similar to Uggs. I could see Petersen possibly working with wide receivers but even that has to be a stretch. Possibly an assistant to the head coach or recruiting coordinator???

STUPID... Just useless...

Whatever. I think Paul Rhoads is smart enough to know he needs to hire a diverse staff at ISU. I just didn't like the reaction on here to the Jimmy Williams as DC rumor. Some said he'd make a good DL coach... like he wasn't good enough to be DC at ISU. Another said his defense was HORRIBLE which is just completely out of touch with reality.

Now we hear that a prominent booster at Auburn played a huge role in hiring Chizik (and turning down Gill). I just don't want to see those kind of shenanigans going on at ISU.

Um, it's an honest concern. Look no further than the recruitment of JaMarkus McFarland, where one of his mom's biggest concerns was someone he could talk to about any issues dealing with his race.

Was McCarney with them?

My senario
1. Rhoads priority was to recruit and to have meetings with each player on the team and has not gotten to the DC yet

2. Rhoads has a person picked out, but has not gotten a chance for a face to face meeting yet

3. The person he wants has a commitment to another school, and Rhoads will let him honor it. (unlike others we know)

I believe it is one of these three. I don't believe it is any of the above senarios from the quote.

I would honestly like to know why everyone, well not everyone, but some think that the DC is going to come from a NFL team? Whomever feels this way can you enlighten me to your reasoning. I am not saying I won't believe it, but I would like to know how you got to this conclusion. Thanks in advance.

Edit: I guess more specifically, why coaches that are in the Super Bowl.

Sometimes the NFL is not the best place for a particular coach. They may relate better to the players in the college game. Carroll wasn't a good NFL coach but he sure is good in the college ranks. It isn't always about being in the NFL. It's not for everyone. And vice versa...

What makes people believe this is actually something that is 'in play' though?
Are there coaches that CPR has from those teams i'm just not aware of?
Please share if you know...

Could Willis have been coming over as DC and he caught a chance to go Alabama and now we are looking again?
