Could Willis have been coming over as DC and he caught a chance to go Alabama and now we are looking again?
IMO, very doubtful.

Whatever. I think Paul Rhoads is smart enough to know he needs to hire a diverse staff at ISU. I just didn't like the reaction on here to the Jimmy Williams as DC rumor. Some said he'd make a good DL coach... like he wasn't good enough to be DC at ISU. Another said his defense was HORRIBLE which is just completely out of touch with reality.
Now we hear that a prominent booster at Auburn played a huge role in hiring Chizik (and turning down Gill). I just don't want to see those kind of shenanigans going on at ISU.
maybe coach Rhoades is going to be the D cordinator also hes a defensive coach what do you think?
I
As for diversity, I'd hope that CPR does address it. You need minority coaches to not only relate to minority players, but to help recruit them.
My thoughts exactly. I think Rhoades may just name himself DC. He hired an up-and-comer for OC and perhaps he will have a completely hands-off approach to that side of the ball? It is very interesting that almost the entire staff has been assembled and the area of the team which struggled the most last fall still does not have a coordinator.
or maybe it is because the best candidates out there dont want the job for that reason alone.
I dont get why people still think he's gonna be the DC as well as the HC...he has already said he will not be the DC. Recruiting at this point is much more important because how close we are to signing day. The players know what kind of defense theyre getting with Rhoads so it doesnt really matter if we get one now or after signing day.
I for one wasn't super excited about Williams. Yeah, his D created a lot of turnovers, but it was ranked pretty poorly. ISU had a good turnover D back in 2004 which was OK, but we had problems stopping teams in crunch time. The other reason why I wasn't thrilled with JW was that he was a DB coach at Nebraska and Ash has the DBs covered.
On a side note, I saw an interesting exchange this morning at the East Hy-Vee Starbucks. Tony Petersen (former QB coach who was let go by Chizik) stopped into the Starbucks and McFarland came in the store right after. The two talked for a few minutes and I overheard Petersen say "I'm staying around here in some capacity." I don't know what he could possibly be doing for Iowa State or if I am reading too much into it, but he was decked out head to toe in Iowa State gear. I highly doubt McFarland is applying for any jobs if he is till in Ames at this point.
I understand the wanting to recruit angle, But coaches are like recruiting too, the best ones go 1st.

Having talked with several people with very high connections, i will assure you this to not be true. The very essence is this program and these kids had the rug yanked out from underneath them. JP did everything he could to not only get a coach in here, but someone that can coach, recruit and could develop something special because he will stay. If you look at Iowa today, the legend of Iowa football really was developed from mr fry. He built iowa into what they are today and then stayed even though he had many opportunities to go elsewhere. Thats what having head coaching stability gets you.
Lets evaluate what Coach Rhoads has done.
Hired a exciting and rising Offensive Coordinator - he knew he needed this position filled because his name is associated to defense, he needed someone/something to speak to those players being recruited for the offense.
He hired a few of the position coaches he wanted right away - obviously losing Coach Price was a setback, but as it stands, we're three coaches away from having a better all around staff. Imo the coaches he's brought in are very good recruiters. Thats very big - keeping Coach Fountain was huge.
Coach Rhoads is looking at Feb. 4th as being right around the corner. He's trying to fill out a recruiting class and establish a lasting relationship with every player on the squad. Those to me are the two most important things to righting the ship. He understands the success of this program in the future hinges on maintaining our current players and landing the right players in this class.
The coaching issues will work themselves out. I for one have my favorites, but, i'm fully aware that a guy like Coach Rhoads knows what he's looking for in a Def. Coord and he will get it. To me, as a fan, thats all we can ask.
And realizing that we still have a bunch of Fresh/Soph kids sitting around talking about all the things that Chizik told them on that phone call sealing those commitments has to be frustrating. The work that Coach Rhoads is doing to not only establish those connections with those young men but also showing them that he will not turn his back on them i'm sure is earning him a lot of respect with the players and thus has earned my respect. This bodes well for ISU football - he is setting the tone for which his team will be established.
I agree with everything you said, but I wasn't trying to say that our defense was horrible. I was trying to say that it is a hard job being a DC in the Big XII right now. I know, if it were me, I would take at least a week thinking it over before making the decision to work somewhere in the conference.
I hear ya swanny, i think we need an up and coming DC or a position coach thats paid his dues and is ready for that shot at being a DC. For the dollars we can offer, and the position in general, were looking for a coach that this position would be considered a step up - regardless.
Either way, i will be glad when that post is filled - whenever it happens!!!!
