Throwback Thread: COACHING SEARCH: Wednesday, Nov. 25 evening update

Honestly, I think there are some good choices. Campbell, Monken, Fritz.....IMO, all could be good choices. First and foremost, we have to get a guy who really wants the job. And we have some very good things going for us. Pollard will be selling Iowa State as much as the coaching candidates are selling themselves.

Bottom line is that I see Iowa State getting a decent coach. And I don't want the out of the box choices of Stitt or Liepold. To me there is too much risk with those choices and not enough benefit. Far less risk and just as much or more benefit with the the 3 names I listed.

Could not agree more. I think we'll get a good coach out of this, but we should keep it sane.
Maybe push the edge of the box, but don't go wild, especially the Liepold idea.

I know what you mean. I can't even follow our basketball team anymore because of ALL the god stuff... I mean if I had a nickel for every time I've had the very pious Coach Prohm ram religion down my throat I'd still be waiting on my first nickel.

Our new coach could be a staunch believer in Scientology as far as I care, as long as they win most of their football games.

Maybe it's just me, but I flat-out don't care about religion around a football program. Instill your program with the power of Jesus, Yahweh, Allah, alien souls, no one gives a flying f*** as long as you win some g**d***ed football games!

What we need in a coach is the innate ability to recruit and then secondly the ability to "see" that recruit starting. Of all the stuff that drove me nuts about our coaches was not seeing Mike Warren as the feature back and Lanning running the offense. Rhoades would be here today if those two started the season beating Iowa and Toledo. Now also consider this in a coach....a single player can change your team and what offense you run. With a Richardson we pass first, with Lanning we confuse D's and punish pass coverage LB's trying to tackle him. Coaches can't adapt kids to whatever style the coach wants. Coaches have to adapt to what talent they have. Look at how Baylor and TCU are affected when their QB's are lost. Again, how could Rhoads not see Warren and Lanning as his starters going into the season??

Looks like Chip Kelly might be looking for a change of scenery after his last few games.

Campbell was hired in 2011 and coached the Bowl game when Beckman left. Campbell had been the Offensive Coordinator and OL coach in 2010 and 2011 and was Running Game Coordinator and OL coach in 2009.

So the good Toledo football team that Campbell took over.......Campbell helped build. And Campbell has taken that team to a higher level than Beckman did. They are 9-1 this year. And ranked in the Top 25.

A person could make the argument, given Beckman's lack of success at Illinois, that maybe it was Campbell who was more influential on Toledo success than Beckman.

So Campbell was a part of the building process as a Coordinator and has continued that success.

In some ways that is similar to Chris Petersen and Boise State under Dan Hawkins. Dan Hawkins hired Chris Petersen as OC and had great success and left for Colorado where he failed. Meanwhile Chris Petersen has great success at Boise State after Hawkins leaves.

Todd Monken would probably be a good choice as well. I have nothing against him. I just see Campbell as possibly being something special. Campbell has won EVERYWHERE he has been a part of. I could go along with a choice of Todd Monken and maybe take him over Willie Fritz.

I agree with this. I would have been ok if we'd have hired Ben Jacobsen for BB, cause I think he had a lot to do with McDermott's success at UNI.

I wonder if Pollard has called Walt Anderson and his band of monkeys yet for their opinion on who we should hire in addition to the minister of his church?

Love it when ****** bags take a decent thread and try to make it Cave worthy. Nice job, losers.

Look at where we get our best recruits - down south. Whether it's Texas or Florida or somewhere else along the gulf coast, parents and recruits eat up the religious angle. It plays VERY well in living rooms in the south.

I personally don't give a rip about religion, but I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss it as an attribute of a prospective head football coach.

I wasn't so much "dismissing" it. If that's what it takes to bring kids to our school and that's what it takes to win a bunch of football games, then by all means do it.

Frost was coached by Stanford’s Bill Walsh, Nebraska’s Tom Osborne, the New York Jets’ Bill Parcells and Bill Belichick, and Jon Gruden.

That is one thing that does appeal to me about Frost and being the only real assistant I think I would consider. He's played and learned the game from some hall of fame coaches.

Side note...does anyone thin Pollard would ask J Walters and Eric H. For thoughts on next coach? I could see Walters having some sort of input.
