The Truth (with no dare involved) .........

I grew up in Ankeny rooting for both the Clones and the skycarp. Started ISU in the fall of 79 in time for the Duncan Debacle. We did beat Iowa 3 out of 4 which was sweet since my best friend was a skycarp fan. Best story I have was when I was in Fayetteville AR watching a basketball game with some friends. I was fairly lit and a guy walked into the bar with a red sweater on. I said, "Isn't that Tim Floyd?" Next thing I know one of my buddies, who knew the owner, had Tim Floyd come over to our table. He was in town to recruit a kid south of there. Talked for about an hour, got an autograph and by the time I got home I realized I was too drunk to remember much of what he said. Only thing I remember is him telling my Willoughby wasnt good enough for the NBA.

grew up on the dark side saw the light after my first experience at JTS.

It was in 2003, went with my dad to see Oklahoma play ISU because they were number 3 in the country. it was a brutal game to watch, ISU could do nothing on offense, but i remember in the 4th quarter ISU was down like 50 to nothing, and JaMaine Billups ran back an interception like 70 yards for a TD. That was when I really saw how great and loyal ISU fans and I have been a clone ever since.

I am currently a student there as well

Ev Cochrane died several years ago, so there's probably no reason to call him a db (whether he was or not, business wise), and his son, Ev Jr, is to my impression a really nice guy and doesn't deserve to hear his deceased dad trashed.

Since you only want one, years ago I did a column online and series with Johnny during March Madness, after he retired. That led to a number of really cool long distance conversations. Johnny wouldn't know me from Adam to see me, but I hope he'd recognize my voice.

And before any of you ask, I'll be damned if I'm going to pass any of Johnny's outrageous stories across the interweb.

Oh yes, and I'm not Jamie Pollard. Oh damn, that's two, isn't it?

Thank you for sharing Aclone! Don't want to hear any stories about Johnny, just happy that you know him. Ev Cochrane was always very nice to me. I knew him for a couple of years. I am sad to hear of his passing.

I completely rejected Seneca Wallace during a pick up game of bball at the rec, he was less than amused.

I had to guard Jamaal Tinsley in another game and I think he did every "street-ball" trick in the book on me and they all worked.

If you rejected Seneca, who the heck did you take? I was never much of a basketball player because I couldn't dribble with my opposite hand.
Which reminds me of the time I saw a practice in Hilton, and Jerry Cutchall had come out to the corner to set in a defensive stance, legs very wide against (I think) Martinez Denmon, and he went around Jerry so fast that he never got out of his stance. I thought Gus Guydon was going to faint from laughing so hard.

Jeff Hornacek tried to pick up my girlfriend, who is now my wife, during a pickup basketball game at Beyer.

Our intramural flag football team cheated by using Tracy Henderson as a "ringer" until we got caught.

Phaedrus, I never got to see him (Hornacek) play at ISU. I am glad that your girlfriend saw the light.

Interesting that some of the major "insiders" haven't posted in here.

Also find it funny no one has mentioned that they stalk players on facebook for info. It happens.

I don't have much...

My grandpa used to ref ISU wrestling matches. I have a friend who had a one-night stand with Seneca. I've got several Mac autographs, courtesy of a friend in high places. ;)

Seneca's name sure has come up alot as a person's connection the the team.
I miss Mac. He did a lot for the University. I was really hoping that you would post this thread Angie, and share at least one connection. I had been reading the Site for about two years before I "signed up" and I have always been intrigued with your "tactfullness" and telegraphic style. Never too little, never too much.

I was once bounced from an Ames bar by 400 pound All American wrestler Chris Taylor. I did not argue with him. (true story)

I was never that close to him, but I have to say I always had empathy for him. Tragic end. I remember when the football team tried to find a helmet that would fit him and as I recall, they never found one.

Speaking of Al Murdoch.... I've met him, he seems like a good guy, that's my claim to fame.

Did you know he is 4 games away from breaking the all time coaching record for college hockey coaches... 924 wins is the record held currently by Ron Mason.

No I didn't, and I am VERY excited to know so. Thank you for sharing that. When does the season start? I would love to be there when Al breaks that record!

You are far too kind - and what nice posts to everyone!! Thanks!!

Unfortunately (and fortunately, depending on how you look at it!) for me, my best connection on here is probably just being the older sis of a guy running a great ISU fan site.

All right Angie, I CAN'T continue posting around here having people think I am "far too kind" and only post nice messages to people. A guy can take only SO MUCH. So .......................... knock knock

'84 ISU grad. I once was paired against the starting ISU fullback in a Judo class at Iowa State (I think his name was Tom Schoneman sp?)...he out weighed me by atleast 40 lbs. I was able to stay away from him for about one min., then he got ahold of me, threw me down and got a choke hold on me, until I tapped out. About broke my windpipe!

Always been a Cyclone fan growing up in Ames. Don Smith is the first real good player I remember...George Amundson, Dean Carlson, Luther Blue, Hercle Ivy. Ah, the memories. And I do remember Martinez Denmon (from prior post).

Rick, and others, do you think the success of Tim Floyd had anything to do with the dismissal of Tom Davis? I have always thought that because Floyd came in and was immediately successful, that the "team that shall not be mentioned" supporters, decided that going to the first round every year just wasn't good enough? I liked Tom Davis a great deal, what he stood for, and how he developed young men. I have to say that the day he wasn't good enough for them was the final nail in the coffin for me, and any semblance of respect I will ever have for them. And now, whenever he is asked to be anywhere or to do anything for that university they fawn all over him as though nothing happened, including the two faced radio crowd.
